Start NDMP Daemon Start the NDMP daemon on the filer. To do this: At the prompt, type: ndmpd on Alternatively, to start it automatically at boot time, open the /etc/rc file on the filer, and add: ndmpd on User Account for Plug-in Authentication To use root for plug-in authentication, set a valid password for this account. The password cannot be left blank. To use a non-root user, ensure that this account has the necessary privileges to perform NDMP backups and restores.

8 Chapter 2 Installing the Plug-in

Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in 9 for NDMP Application Notes for NetApp Data ONTAP Chapter 3: BACKING UP DATA Understanding Backup Dump Levels Plug-in for NDMP supports both Full and Incremental Backups. The backup type is determined by the Dump Level, which can be set to Level 0 for a Full backup, or Levels 1 through 9 for Incremental Backups: Level 0 or Full Backup A Full Backup backs up all the data in the selected path. Level 1 through 9 or Incremental Backup Incremental Backups base themselves on the most recent lower-level Incremental Backup, and include any data that has changed or is new since the last applicable backup. For example: Level 1 Incremental Backup will include new or changed data since the last Level 0 or Full Backup. Level 2 Incremental Backup will include new or changed data since the last Level 1 Incremental Backup, and so on up to dump Level 9. Note the following: If a directory is included in a dump level 0 backup, it is included in all future dumps even if no changes have occurred. In this instance, the directory is empty and does not contain content. However, this does not negatively affect the recovery of data. Only one dump level is maintained for each selected set of data. For example, if a Full Backup is performed after performing Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Incremental Backups, this resets the dump level to 0, and the subsequent Incremental Backup is based on this Full Backup. If an Incremental Backup in a series fails, the subsequent backup is based on the most recent backup of a lower level. For example, if dump level 1 is completed successfully while dump level 2 fails, dump level 3 backup will be based on dump level 1. The failure of an Incremental Backup will be noted in the NVBU binary logs.

10 Chapter 3 Backing Up Data Backing Up Data in 7.x-7G and 7-Mode In Data ONTAP 7.x 7G and 7-Mode, you can use Plug-in for NDMP to back up files, directories, qtrees, and volumes as well as the snapshots stored on volumes. The backup procedure includes the steps outlined in the following sections Selecting Data for Backup Figure 3-1: Selections tab in 7.x-7G and 7-Mode To select one or more volumes in the selections tree 1. From the NVBU Console on the NVBU Server, open the NVBU Backup window (via either of the toolbar buttons or by clicking Operations > Backup). 2. On the Selections tab, open the NVBU Client on which the plug-in is installed. To open any node on the Selections tab, do either of the following: Double-click the node. Right-click the node, and select Open. 3. In the list of plug-ins, right-click NDMP Client, and select Open. 4. Open the target filer to display the Volumes and Snapshots nodes.

Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in 11 for NDMP Application Notes for NetApp Data ONTAP 5. To select the required data, do the following: Volumes Include All Volumes Select the Volumes node. Include Individual Volumes Open the Volumes node, and select volumes that you want to back up. Important: Do not select a logical unit number (LUN) even though it appears as valid backup points and backing them up does succeed. When you try to restore the LUN, Data ONTAP cannot identify it because the metadata required to identify the LUN is not included when you back up a LUN directly. To work around this issue, you can back up a Snapshot that includes the LUN. Snapshots contain the metadata required to identify a LUN, which ensures that Data ONTAP can identify the restored LUN. Include Individual Files and Directories Open the Volumes node, and then open the target volume. Select the files and directories that you want to back up. Important: You cannot omit the child-level items after selecting the parent node. The backup will fail if you do so. For selective backups, open the parent node, and select each item that you want to back up. Snapshots Open the Snapshots node to list all volumes. Open the required volume to list all directories that have any snapshots available for a backup. Open the required directory, and select the snapshot that you want to back up. You can select only a single snapshot Setting Backup Options This step includes the tasks outlined in the following sections. Note: This step is not applicable if a file or directory is the root selection of a backup. The Backup Options are only available if you have selected a volume or subvolume as the root item for a backup a Setting NDMP Backup Options 1. Select the Backup Options tab. 2. Under NDMP Backup Options, configure the following parameters: Dump Level Select the type of backup to perform. For a Full Backup, enter 0; for an Incremental Backup, enter any level from 1 to 9 based on the previous backup sequence.

12 Chapter 3 Backing Up Data Update /etc/dumpdates If your backup strategy includes Incremental Backups, select this check box. The /etc/dumpdates file keeps a record of the backup, including the name of the backup, the level of the backup, and the time of the snapshot used for the backup. The information in this file is used to determine what data must be included in an Incremental Backup. Backup ACLs Select this option to back up the access-control lists (ACLs) associated with the selected files. Do Direct Backup if Possible Select this check box to enable Direct Access Recovery (DAR). DAR enables precise tape positioning, which allows quick recovery of individual or a small set of files. Without DAR, the backup saveset will have to be read sequentially to restore files. DAR requires Data ONTAP 6.x or later. Save File Information This option lets you browse individual files and directories while selecting data during restore. Granular restores cannot be performed if you clear this check box. Quest Software recommends that you leave this check box selected. Request Unicode File Information Select this check box to convert file and directory names to display them correctly in the NVBU Restore window. To use this option, make sure that the following requirements are met: UTF-8 encoding is supported and enabled on the filer. The appropriate language-type is set on each volume selected for backup. The Use UTF-8 Conversions parameter is enabled for the filer (either while adding the NDMP Server or using the Edit NDMP Server option). The Codepage for UTF-8 Conversions is set in the Configure dialog. Exclude Use this parameter to list all files and directories that you want to exclude from a backup. Enter the complete file path, starting with a forward slash ( / ). If you do not provide the complete path, the plug-in excludes any item that matches the entry. To specify multiple items, separate them using a comma. You can use up to two wild cards per file. The wild card characters can only be used at the first or the last place in the file name. For example, if you enter /dir1/tmp*, *.o in Exclude, it excludes the following items: Files and directories starting with the letters tmp in the directory /dir1. All files and directories with the extension.o.

Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in 13 for NDMP Application Notes for NetApp Data ONTAP The names are case-sensitive for an NFS export, but not for a CIFS share b c Setting Volume Backup Options Under Volume Backup Options, configure the following parameters: Backup Subvolumes Individually Select this check box if you are backing up more than one qtree from the same volume. This lets you run separate jobs for each qtree. For example, if two qtrees are selected in addition to other non-qtree files and directories, the Plug-in for NDMP will run three subjobs, one for each of the qtrees and one for the non-qtree data. Note the following: The Plug-in for NDMP will automatically create individual jobs if the selected qtrees reside on different volumes, whether you select this option or not. Individual jobs will be created for each volume included in the backup. Each child job will create an individual saveset. In the preceding example, three savesets will be created. This facilitates a faster restore. When used with other NVBU functionality, this option can cause undesired results. For example, when used with the Ensure this Backup is the First on the Media option on the Target tab, each sub-job will be set to exist first on the media and require a separate media. Backup Subvolume Data Only Select this check box in conjunction with the Backup Subvolumes Individually option to back up the qtree data while excluding all the non-qtree files and directories from the backup. This option is useful because the Plug-in for NDMP does not allow you to clear selected child-level items. Instead of selecting individual qtrees, you can select the parent volume and then select this option to exclude the non-qtree data. The backup will fail if the selected volume does not contain any qtrees. Backup Non-Subvolume Data ONLY Select this check box to back up non-qtree data while excluding the data in the qtrees. It will not be available if Backup Subvolumes Individually is selected. This option is useful because the Plug-in for NDMP does not allow you to clear selected child-level items. Instead of selecting individual files and directories, you can select the parent volume and then select this option to exclude the qtree data. Setting Sub-Job Options Under Sub Jobs, configure the following parameters: Number of Backups to Run in Parallel Enter the number of jobs that can run concurrently. By default, this parameter is set to zero. With this value, all jobs run in parallel, limited only by the availability of drives, network

14 Chapter 3 Backing Up Data bandwidth, and other resources. To achieve the desired result, you must set the same value for each job. Delete Auto Generated Backup Jobs on Completion By default, each sub-job is included in the NVBU Jobs window, which may create confusion when you try to access the corresponding entry in this window. To avoid this and include only a single entry for the parent job, select the Delete Auto Generated Backup Jobs on Completion check box d Setting Backup Restart Extension (BRE) Options NDMP BRE options lets you resume a failed backup job from the last checkpoint before failure. Without BRE, any failure encountered during a backup renders the entire saveset unusable even if a significant portion of the data was successfully transferred to backup media. To take advantage of BRE, configure the following parameters under Restart: Enable Restart, If Possible Select this option to enable checkpoint restarts. Number of Gigabytes Between Checkpoints Enter the checkpoint interval in gigabytes (GB) of data written to the media. You can set the checkpoint interval to any value between With the default value of 0, the checkpoints are set to media boundaries. Number of Attempts to Restart Backup Enter the number of times the plug-in attempts to restart the backup. You can set the number of retries to any value between With the default value of 0, the plug-in keeps trying to restart the backup infinitely. Delay, in Minutes, Between Retries Enter the delay between restarts in minutes. You can set it to any value between With the default value of 0, the plug-in tries to resume the backup immediately upon failure. Additional Notes on BRE A backup job can be resumed only if suitable checkpoints exist for the job. The checkpoints are set during phase 4 of an NDMP backup and are logged as Background messages in the NVBU Logs. BRE may fail over filer reboots. Certain circumstances may prevent the filer from correctly continuing a backup restart. If this occurs, Node Data Missing for File <FileName> will be written to the NVBU Logs during the index building stage. If this message appears in the log, it implies that the restart has failed and the job cannot be resumed. All information related to backup checkpoints will be lost if the NVBU Server is restarted. BRE will not work over NVBU Server restarts. If network connectivity is lost during backup and the filer is not able to detect this failure, the session will hang and you will be required to kill the session to

Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in 15 for NDMP Application Notes for NetApp Data ONTAP recover. You can issue the command ndmpd kill <sessionid> at the filer command prompt to kill the session. When you kill a session, the drives and/or changer in use will go offline. To bring them back online, right-click the drive, and select Check. Alternatively, you can update the library configuration (right-click the library, and select Modify). Another method to bring offline drives back online is to restart the NVBU Server. However, BRE will not work if the NVBU Server is restarted Finalizing and Submitting Jobs To finalize and submit a backup job 1. Select the Schedule, Target, and Advanced Options tabs, and configure the required options. These options are common to all NVBU Plug-ins. For more information, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup Administrator s Guide. 2. In Job Title, enter a suitable title for the job. Specify a detailed title that lets you easily identify the job for monitoring its progress or restoring data. 3. Click Submit on the toolbar, or select Accept > Submit Backup. You can monitor the job progress via the NVBU Jobs window and view the logs via the NVBU Logs window. For more information, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup Administrator s Guide Backing Up Data in C-Mode To back up one or more volumes in C-Mode 1. 4. Open the target filer to display the Volumes node: Note: Snapshots are only supported in Data ONTAP 8.1 C-Mode or later.

16 Chapter 3 Backing Up Data Figure 3-2: Selections tab in C-Mode 5. To select the required data, do the following: Include All Volumes Select the Volumes node. Include Individual Volumes Open the Volumes node, and select volumes that you want to back up. Important: In Data ONTAP 8.x C-Mode, you cannot open the Volumes node to browse or select the contents. However, you can specify a single data path for a backup. For details on backing up an individual data path, see Backing Up Individual Data Paths in C-Mode. 6. Select the Backup Options tab, and configure the following parameters: Note: This step is not applicable if a file or directory is the root selection of a backup. The Backup Options are only available if you have selected a volume or subvolume as the root item for a backup. NDMP Backup Options For more information, see Setting NDMP Backup Options. Sub-Job Options For more information, see Setting Sub-Job Options. 7. Complete and submit the job. For more information, see Finalizing and Submitting Jobs.

Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in 17 for NDMP Application Notes for NetApp Data ONTAP Backing Up Individual Data Paths in C-Mode In Data ONTAP 8.x C-Mode, you cannot open the Volumes node to browse or select the contents. However, you can specify a single data path for a backup. To back up an individual path, use the following steps: 1. 19 Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in 19 for NDMP Application Notes for NetApp Data ONTAP Chapter 4: RESTORING DATA Restoring Dump Backups The procedure for restoring Dump Backups includes the steps outlined in the following sections Selecting Data to Restore To select data for a restore 1. From the NVBU Console on the NVBU Server, open the NVBU Restore window (via either of the toolbar buttons or by clicking Operations > Restore). 2. On the Selections tab, open the NVBU Client on which the plug-in is installed. To open any node on the Selections tab, do either of the following: Double-click the node. Right-click the node, and select Open. 3. In the list of plug-ins, right-click NDMP Client, and select Open to display the backup savesets created with the plug-in. Each saveset is labeled with its Job Title followed by the Saveset ID and the Backup Timestamp. 4. Open the required backup saveset by double-clicking the applicable node (the right-click + Open method is not available). 5. Select the required data: To restore the entire saveset, select the root node. To restore individual files and directories, select the target files and directories in the selections tree. The selections tree can only be browsed if the Save File Information option was selected during backup. If the backup contains a single file, the file name is added to the directory path. On the Selections tab, it appears as /path/to/filename/filename and is restored in that manner. The file will be restored correctly if you select the directory and restore the file.

20 Chapter 4 Restoring Data a Important Notes While restoring data from a snapshot backup, you must use the Relocate option. You can relocate the data to the same volume or a different volume. The restore job will fail if you do not use the Relocate option. For more information on relocating data, refer to Renaming or Relocating Data During Restore. You cannot omit the child-level items after selecting the parent node. The restore will fail if you do so. For selective restores, open the parent node, and select each item that you want to restore Setting Restore Options 1. Select the Restore Options tab. 2. Configure the following parameters. NDMP Server This parameter can be used to restore data to a different filer. By default, the name of the original filer from which the data was backed up is displayed. Do not change this while restoring data to the same filer. To restore to a different filer, you must add it as an NDMP Client. Direct Access Restore Mode Select the appropriate DAR mode from the following: Use Direct Access Restore if Possible Select this option to perform a direct access restore if the backup was direct and the mover and the data server are capable of completing a Direct Access Restore. If these conditions are not met, a non-direct access restore will occur. Use Direct Access Restore by Recovering Individual Files Select this option to restore a directory and its file contents. Any empty directories in the saveset are ignored. This option must be selected if any entity has been marked as omitted in the Selections tab. Otherwise, the restore will fail. Only Do Direct Access Restore Select this option to force a Direct Access Restore. Note that the backup being restored must have been a direct backup and a capable mover and data server must be available; otherwise, the restore will fail. Never Do Direct Access Restore Select this option to perform a standard Non-Direct Access Restore. Incremental Restore Select this check box to extract data recursively and reconstruct the selected subtree to the state it was in at the time of backup. This is equivalent to setting the environment variable EXTRACT=N. The plug-in will overwrite the existing files and delete the files that were not present at the time of backup.

Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in 21 for NDMP Application Notes for NetApp Data ONTAP Restore ACLs Select this option to restore the ACLs from the backed up file. This option is equivalent to setting the environment variable EXTRACT_ACL=Y. You can use this option only if the Backup ACLs option was selected during backup. Important Notes When individual files are selected for a Direct Access Restore, their parentlevel directory permissions are not restored. When running a Direct Access Restore, NVBU organizes the restore requests into groups of 1024 files at a time. In the event that a restore selection consists of more than 1024 total files, multiple restore requests will be issued, which means multiple log entries will appear for the job Finalizing and Submitting Jobs To finalize and submit a restore job 1. Select the Source, Schedule, and Advanced Options tabs, and configure the required options. These options are common to all NVBU Plug-ins. For more information, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup Administrator s Guide. 2. In Job Title, enter a suitable title for the job. Specify a detailed title that lets you easily identify the job for monitoring its progress or restoring data. 3. Click Submit on the toolbar, or select Accept > Submit Restore. You can monitor the job progress via the NVBU Jobs window and view the logs via the NVBU Logs window. For more information, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup Administrator s Guide. Additional Notes While restoring data, you may notice one or more of the following entries in the NVBU Logs. These messages are routine and do not require any intervention: Mover has Paused due to Seek Outside the Supplied Window This entry is displayed as a Background message. BRE backups create a new segment on tape for each checkpoint (as configured in Number of Gigabytes Between Checkpoints on the Backup Options tab). This message is displayed after each individual segment is restored. It indicates the underlying mechanism behind the NDMP operation. Received Media Request for UID This entry is displayed as an Information message. It appears after each segment is restored as a request is sent to the Media Manager for the media that contains the next segment. This message appears even if the next segment resides on the same media.

22 Chapter 4 Restoring Data No Suitable Drive or Media for the Job - Request Held in Queue This entry is displayed as a Warning. It appears when the required piece of media is not available or is in use. If the requested media is the current one, this message indicates a temporary condition and the restore will resume shortly Restoring Incremental Backups The incremental restores build on each other. To restore an Incremental Backup, you must have all the backups from Level 0 through the last backup in the backup sequence that you want to restore. To restore an Incremental Backup 1. Restore the Full or Level 0 Backup. For more information, see Restoring Dump Backups. 2. Restore each Incremental Backup in the backup sequence that you want to restore, starting with the lowest-level backup and going to the last backup that you want to restore. For each dump level, follow the instructions detailed in Restoring Dump Backups. Important: All NDMP backups are effectively snapshots of the volume. When you restore a dump level in an increment series, it restores all the data in the saveset and at the same time delete the files present on the filer but not available in the given increment, and thus reconstructs the subtree as it was at the time of backup Renaming or Relocating Data During Restore While restoring a Dump Backup, you can rename the directories to create a copy of the data instead of overwriting of the existing versions. The Plug-in for NDMP also allows you to relocate the data to a different volume, which can be useful if the original volume is down or if you are dealing with limited bandwidth or capacity. To rename and/or relocate a file or directory during a restore 1. Select the data for restore. For more information, see Selecting Data to Restore. 2. Right-click the file or directory to be renamed or relocated, and select Rename.

Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in 23 for NDMP Application Notes for NetApp Data ONTAP 3. In the Restore Rename dialog, select the Rename To check box to activate the associated box: To rename a file or directory, enter the new name. The entity will be restored with the name specified here. To relocate data to a different volume, enter the volume name. You can also rename while relocating by specifying a new path. The volume to which you are relocating must already exist. In Data ONTAP 8.1 C-Mode, use the following format to specify the new path: /<VServerName>/<VolumeName>/<FolderName> For example: /vs1/vol4/data/restore 4. Click OK to apply changes 5. Configure the appropriate Restore Options. For more information, see Setting Restore Options. 6. Complete and submit the job. For more information, see Finalizing and Submitting Jobs Restoring Data to an Alternate Filer You can also restore data to an alternate filer, which can be useful during a server migration or a disaster recovery operation. To restore the selected data to an alternate filer 1. Add the target filer as an NDMP Server. For more information, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for NDMP User s Guide. 2. Select the data for restore. For more information, see Selecting Data to Restore. 3. To rename or relocate data during restore, see Renaming or Relocating Data During Restore. 4. Select the Restore Options tab. 5. In NDMP Server, enter the alternate filer name. 6. Select the appropriate DAR method. For more information, see Setting Restore Options. 7. Complete and submit the job. For more information, see Finalizing and Submitting Jobs.

24 Chapter 4 Restoring Data Additional Features Available on the Selections Tab This section describes the additional features present on the Selections tab of the NVBU Restore window. These features are common to all NVBU plug-ins. For more information, refer to the section dedicated to Restore functionality in the Quest NetVault Backup Administrator s Guide. Sorting the savesets To sort the savesets listed on the Selections tab, select one of the following methods in the Selection Method list: Plugin This is the default method. The savesets are ordered according to the plug-in used to generate them. Backup Set To sort the savesets by the Selection Set used for the backup, select Backup Set. Job To sort the savesets by the Job Title, select Job. Filtering the savesets To filter the savesets displayed on the Selections tab, configure the following parameters under Filter Options: By Date Range Select the By Date Range check box, and enter or select the From and To dates in the boxes provided to list the savesets generated during a given period. Show On-line Status Select the Show On-line Status check box to list the savesets stored on the currently online media. Click Apply Filter to set the filter. Searching for data items To find a data item inside a saveset, right-click it, and select Search. Enter the item name in the Search String box, and click Search. Viewing the media list To view the media list for a saveset, right-click it, and select Media List. Compressing indexes To compress the online indexes to reduce the space used by the NVDB, right-click the target Client or the saveset, and select Compress.
