On Linux/UNIX, it may be necessary to increase the amount of shared memory, typically the shmmax setting. On Windows, it is necessary to increase the MaximumSGList setting for the tape device. For details, refer to the relevant operating system and SCSI card documentation.

19 Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for SnapMirror to Tape User s Guide 19 Chapter 4: BACKING UP DATA WITH PLUG-IN FOR SM2T Available Backup Methods Available Block Level Incremental Backup Types Performing a Standard Backup Selecting Data for a Backup Configuring Sub-Job Options Finalizing and Submitting a Job Performing BLI Backups Best Practices Available Backup Methods The Plug-in for SM2T supports the following backup methods: Standard Backup Method The Standard Backup method performs a Full or Level 0 backup of the selected volumes. It is the only backup method available for backing up full volumes on Data ONTAP versions prior to The plug-in automatically selects the Standard Backup method to perform backup jobs created with plug-in versions older than v7.6.x. Note: The Delete Snapshot on Exit check-box continues to be available for the Standard Backup Method, which lets you delete the snapshots of full volumes after a backup. Block Level Incremental (BLI) Backup Method This BLI Backup method can be used to perform Full, Incremental, or Differential Backups of the selected volumes. It uses snapshots to perform backups. A Full Backup initializes a backup context against which the plug-in performs Incremental and Differential Backups of the selected volumes. The BLI Backup Method is only available with v7.6.x and later versions of the Plug-in for SM2T. To implement a BLI backup strategy, you must use a Selection Set. Note: The BLI Backups generated using the Plug-in for SM2T cannot be consolidated using the Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for Consolidation (Plug-in for Consolidation).

20 20 Chapter 4 Backing up Data with Plug-in for SM2T Available Block Level Incremental Backup Types The BLI backup method supports the following backup types: Full A Full Backup backs up the entire volume. It serves as the base for the subsequent Incremental and Differential Backups. Incremental An Incremental Backup backs up the changes in a volume since the last Full, Differential, or Incremental Backup. Incremental Backups consume minimum storage space and are quicker to perform. However, data recovery takes longer and may require the plug-in to access several savesets depending on the number of Incremental savesets that must be restored. Differential A Differential Backup backs up the changes in a volume since the last Full Backup. Differential Backups speed up recovery since the plug-in is only required to restore two savesets. However, they consume more storage space and take longer than the Incremental Backups. Differential Backups duplicate the data backed up by previous Incremental or Differential Backups Performing a Standard Backup The procedure for performing a Standard Backup of the selected volumes or snapshots includes the following steps: Selecting Data for a Backup Configuring Sub-Job Options Finalizing and Submitting a Job Selecting Data for a Backup To select data for a backup 1. 23 Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for SnapMirror to Tape User s Guide 23 Figure 4-3: Backup Options tab for filers that support BLI Figure 4-4: Backup Options tab for filers that do not support BLI a Selecting the Backup Method Click the Backup Options tab, and configure the following parameter: Backup Method Under Backup Method, select Standard. This will create a Full or Level 0 Backup of the selected volumes. For details on the Standard Backup Method, refer to Available Backup Methods on page 19. This step is not applicable if your filer does not support the BLI backup method. For such filers, the plug-in will automatically use the Standard Backup Method. Note: The snapshots of full volumes generated for a Standard Backup cannot be used to perform BLI Backups.

24 24 Chapter 4 Backing up Data with Plug-in for SM2T b c Configuring Standard Options Under Standard Options (or NDMP Backup Options), configure the following parameter: Delete Snapshot on Exit Select this check box to delete the snapshots generated by the Plug-in for SM2T after the backup completes. This option is only applicable to the Standard Backup method. Configuring Sub-Job Options Under Sub Jobs, configure the following parameters: Number of Backups to Run in Parallel Enter or select the number of jobs that can be run concurrently. By default, this parameter is set to zero. With this value, all the jobs will be run in parallel, limited only by the availability of drives, network bandwidth and other resources. To achieve the desired result, you must set the same value for each job. Delete Auto Generated Backup Jobs on Completion The Plug-in for SM2T creates individual sub-jobs for each qtree and volume included in a backup. For example, if a volume contains 15 qtrees and the Backup Sub-Volumes Individually option is selected, the plug-in creates16 sub-jobs for a single job. By default, each sub-job is included in the NVBU Jobs window, which may create confusion when you try to access the corresponding entry in this window. To avoid this and include only a single entry for the parent job, select the Delete Auto Generated Backup Jobs on Completion check box Finalizing and Submitting a Job To finalize and submit a backup job 1. Click the Schedule, Target and Advanced Options tabs, and configure the required options. These options are common to all NVBU Plug-ins. For details on configuring these options, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup Administrator s Guide. 2. In Job Title, enter a suitable title for the job. Specify a detailed title that allows you to easily identify the job for monitoring its progress or restoring data. 3. Click Submit on the toolbar. Alternatively, on the Accept menu, click Submit Backup. You can monitor the job progress from the NVBU Jobs window, and view the logs from the NVBU Logs window. For details on these functions, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup Administrator s Guide.

25 4.3.0 Performing BLI Backups Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for SnapMirror to Tape User s Guide 25 The BLI Backup Method uses snapshots to perform Full, Incremental, and Differential Backups of the selected volumes. You can either create a new snapshot with the Plug-in for SM2T or use an existing snapshot to perform these backups. Creating New Snapshots with the Plug-in for SM2T The Plug-in for SM2T automatically creates a new snapshot for Full Backups, which is used as a base for the Incremental and Differential Backups. To create snapshots for Incremental and Differential Backups, you must select the Create New Snapshot option. The snapshots are named as follows: snapshot_for_smtape.x-x-x-x.n where x-x-x-x represents a hexadecimal number and n represents the snapshot sequence number (0 for Full Backup, 1 for Incremental Backup 1, 2 for Incremental Backup 2, and so on). For example, snapshot_for_smtape.5574d877-cfa3-11e snapshot_for_smtape.5574d877-cfa3-11e snapshot_for_smtape.5574d877-cfa3-11e Using Existing Snapshots The Plug-in for SM2T can also use existing snapshots for BLI Backups. The snapshots must be named as follows: snapshot_for_smtape.<any string>.n where n represents the snapshot sequence number (0 for Full Backup, 1 for Incremental Backup 1, 2, and so on). For example, snapshot_for_smtape.vol1.0 snapshot_for_smtape.vol1.1 snapshot_for_smtape.vol1.2 For backups using the existing snapshots, make sure that you do not select the Create New Snapshot option. To perform BLI Backups, use the following steps: 1. On the NVBU Server, open the NVBU Backup window, and select the required data. For details, refer to Selecting Data for a Backup on page 20.

26 26 Chapter 4 Backing up Data with Plug-in for SM2T Figure 4-5: Backup Options for the BLI Backup Method 2. To implement a backup strategy that involves Incremental or Differential Backups, save the selected data into a Selection Set. Selection Sets are essential for Incremental and Differential Backups. You must create the selection set during a Full Backup, and use it for Full, Incremental, and Differential Backups. The backup job will report an error if you do not use a Selection Set for Incremental or Differential Backups. For details on creating Selection Sets, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup Administrator s Guide. 3. Click the Backup Options tab, and configure the following parameters: Backup Method Under Backup Method, select Block Level Incremental. For details on the BLI Backup Method, refer to Available Backup Methods on page 19. BLI Backup Type Under BLI Backup Type, select one of the following: Full Incremental Differential For details on the BLI Backup Types, refer to Available Backup Methods on page 19. BLI Options Under BLI Options, configure the following parameters: Important: For backups that use the existing snapshots, do not select BLI Options. Create New Snapshot To create a new snapshot for the backup, select this check box. This parameter is only applicable to Incremental and Differential Backups. The filer automatically generates an SMTape snapshot for a Full Backup. Therefore, the Create New Snapshot check box remains grayed-out for a Full Backup.

27 Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for SnapMirror to Tape User s Guide 27 Delete Previous Snapshot To delete any snapshots created for the previous Incremental or Differential Backups, select this check box. It will not delete the snapshot created for the current backup. This option is not applicable to snapshots created for Full Backups. Sub Jobs Under Sub Jobs, configure the following parameters: Number of Jobs to Run in Parallel Delete Auto Generated Backup Jobs on Completion For details, refer to Configuring Sub-Job Options on page Complete and submit the job. For details, refer to Finalizing and Submitting a Job on page Additional Notes Note the following: For BLI Backups, the snapshots must be numbered sequentially whether they are created using the Plug-in for SM2T or any other application. If a snapshot already exists on the filer, the backup will fail with the following message: Snapshot '%s' is unexpectedly already present. The backup cannot occur until this snapshot has been removed to allow the job to create a new snapshot of the same name. When you select the Delete Previous Snapshot check box, the plug-in will retain the snapshot for that backup and the base Full Backup. It will delete all other snapshots. For example, Full Backup of SetA The Create New Snapshot check box is grayedout and the Delete Previous Snapshot check box is cleared. Incremental Backup 1 of SetA The Create New Snapshot and Delete Previous Snapshot check boxes are selected. 36 36 Chapter 5 Restoring Data with Plug-in for SM2T 6. Complete and submit the job. For details, refer to Finalizing and Submitting a Job on page Restoring Data to an Alternate NetApp Filer The Plug-in for SM2T allows you to restore a volume to an alternate NetApp Filer, which can be used when the original filer is unavailable or dealing with limited capacity or bandwidth. The procedure for restoring data to an alternate Filer includes the following steps: Prerequisites Restore Procedure a b Figure 5-6: Restore Options tab Prerequisites Before proceeding, ensure that the following requirements are met: Add the alternate NetApp Filer to the Plug-in for SM2T. For details on adding an SM2T Server, refer to Adding a NetApp Filer to the Plug-in for SM2T on page 13. Ensure that the volume size of the destination filer is equal to or greater than the volume size of the original volume. This is necessary even if the amount of data transferred is smaller than the overall volume size of the destination filer. For example, if the original volume was 10GB and the data snapshot from it was 2GB, relocating this data to a different volume that is only 5GB in size will result in a failure. Restore Procedure To restore a volume to an alternate filer 1. Start the NVBU Console on the NVBU Server, and open the NVBU Restore window. Open the applicable saveset, and select the required data. For details, refer to Selecting Data for a Restore on page Click the Restore Options tab, and configure the following parameter:

37 Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for SnapMirror to Tape User s Guide 37 NDMP Server By default, this parameter contains the name of the original filer from which the data was backed up. To relocate the volume to an alternate filer, enter the name of the target NetApp Filer. 3. Configure the remaining options on this tab. For details, refer to Setting Restore Options on page Complete and submit the job. For details, refer to Finalizing and Submitting a Job on page Mirroring Process Using NetApp s SnapMirror utility and Plug-in for SM2T, it is possible to take a Snapshot from a NetApp Filer and transfer it to a piece of media, and then mirror this data to a second filer. However, the plug-in does not control this aspect of the operation. It is solely handled by NetApp utilities. For details on this procedure, contact NetApp or consult the appropriate documentation Troubleshooting This section describes some common errors and their solution. Description Symptom Solution Restore fails with the message Aborting: Destination volume, XXX, is too small. Restore fails immediately after the media is assigned and the restore operation is started on the filer. Add more disk space to the destination volume or choose another destination volume of sufficient capacity.
