3 Changes in EDEM This Release Notes document contains the following information about EDEM 2.7.1: Enhancements Bug Fixes Known Issues Enhancements EDEM contains the following enhancements: Coupling Interface (CFD) Additional capabilities have been added to the EDEM Coupling Interface to allow further development of the EDEM-Fluent coupling. This does not affect the operation of the current EDEM-Fluent coupling so users can continue to use the existing coupling with this version of EDEM. What it does allow; however, is the future expansion of the coupling to handle more advanced drag models. Additional features include: Particle data expanded to include particle mass New function to provide details of particle prototype, info includes: o Particle Type Name o Mass o Volume o Moment of Inertia o Number of Surfaces (spheres) New function to provide details of particle prototype structure, info includes (for each surface): o Radius o Contact Radius o Position o Surface Name Coupling Interface (MBD) Changes have also been made to improve the behavior when working with Point of Action and Centre of Mass functions for geometry. Changes should cascade in a logical way down this order, Position > Centre of Mass > Point of Action, but will not propagate upwards. Also, torque for the geometry section will be returned about the Point of Action if one has been set, otherwise the Centre of Mass will be used. Analyst Export Data for ANSYS Workbench The existing export tool has been expanded to allow extraction of data for transient analysis. Using the option Timestep per File the tool can now export a dataset for every stored timestep within the specified range. 3

4 Support for Particle Analytics P4 P4 is a useful analysis tool produced by Particle Analytics based in Edinburgh, UK. It specializes in presenting data from DEM simulations using spatial and temporal averaging and can map hard to visualize concepts such as density, void fraction and shear stress. EDEM adds a new export tool to write out data in a format that can be directly read into P4. For more details contact Particle Analytics: EDEM Classroom Edition The 10,000 element limit has been eased to only include particles, previously geometry elements would be included in this count. Installer The prerequisites that come with the EDEM installer have be changed so that the installer can now be used to install the License Manager on Windows Server operating systems without the need for Desktop Experience to be installed. Installing EDEM on Windows Server still requires Desktop Experience. Bug Fixes EDEM includes the following bug fixes: Creator Bug fixed where creating a copy of a geometry section which had a Factory attached would also result in a duplication of the Factory. Bug fixed where a CAD file would not import if the filename contained multiple full stops (periods). Simulator Bug fixed where, on computers with Intel Haswell architecture processors, EDEM would show less than the total number of processors in the Simulator. Analyst Bug fixed where multiple queries could result in no data when working with manual selection groups and Collision data. General Various updates made to XML to accommodate recent changes with factories and conveyor belts. 4

5 EDEM API / Coupling Interface Bug resolved where using setgeometrycom() function would not result in a change to the geometry centre of mass. Bug resolved where angular velocity of Element 2 in a contact model would be reported as zero. Known Issues EDEM contains the following known issues: Missing Windows links after installing License Server Installing the license server on Windows 7 can sometimes result in broken links appearing in the Start Menu for default Windows items. After restarting the computer all links will be restored correctly. License tokens fail to check-in Running EDEM 2.7 with a license server from an older version of EDEM will sometimes result in error messages related to checking in license tokens. If this occurs update the license server to the version included in the latest installer. 5
