1 1 Floating License Server This utility is used by your network administrator to install the MecSoft Floating License Manager on the Server or any computer on your network that could be used to serve licenses to clients. If you have purchased a multi-seat Floating License, DO NOT enter your network license Activate Code in the product License dialog! A Floating License must be activated from within the MecSoft Floating License Manager! Upon installing MecSoft Floating License Manager: 1. Click on the Windows Start Menu. 2. Select All Programs or All Apps. 3. Go to the program group containing MecSoft Floating License Manager select it and then select MecSoft Floating License Manager. Note: Make sure that you have full administrative privileges before running this utility. 2 2 STEP 1) Create License File In this step we will create a license file on the server. STEP 1) Create a License File MecSoft Floating License Server: Create License File Create a License File on this machine 1. From the left panel, select 1) Create License File. 2. On the right panel, enter the Activation Code that was provided to you by MecSoft Corporation. A Floating License CAN NOT be activated from the MecSoft product's License dialog! It must be activated here from within the MecSoft Floating License Server! 3. Click Create License File. Upon successful creation of the license file the following message now appears.

3 3 4. Click OK on the message. Note: A license file with file extension <productname.lic> (for example rhino3dprint.lic) is now created in the same folder where the MecSoft Floating License Manager utility was installed. By default this would be under C:\Program Files\MecSoft Corporation \MecSoft Floating License Manager on a 32 bit windows machine or C:\ Program Files (x86) \MecSoft Corporation\MecSoft Floating License Manager on a 64 bit windows machine. 4 4 STEP 2) Start License Server Perform this step ONLY after you have verified that the license file has been created in STEP 1) Create License File. STEP 2) Start License Server MecSoft Floating License Server: Start License Server Start License Server 1. from the left panel select 2) Start License Server. 2. From the right pane click on the Start License Server button. The following message is displayed if the license server has been successfully started. 3. Click OK on the message.

5 5 You can verify this by going to the Processes tab in your Windows Task Manager to make sure the following programs are running: Stop License Server Pick this button to Stop the License Server and End the processes listed above. 6 6 STEP 3) Load Licenses After Step 1: Create License File and successfully completed Step 2: Start License Server, you can then load your licenses in the Floating License Manager. STEP 3) Load Licenses MecSoft Floating License Server: Load Licenses Load Licenses From the right panel click Load Licenses. This will list all license files found in the folder where the MecSoft Floating License Manager is located. There is one License File per MecSoft product. Each license file contains the total number of floating network licenses you have purchased. License Status Select the License File from the drop-down list to view its status information. An example is shown below.

7 7 License Status Exam ple Verify license access from client computer After this step, see Verify License from Client Computer. Delete License File of Current License CAUTION: Selecting this button will invalidate the selected license! DO NOT select this button unless instructed to do so by MecSoft support. ONLY use this button when instructed to do so by MecSoft Licensing! Selecting this button WILL DELETE the selected license file (see Load Licenses above). A message will be displayed warning you that selecting this button will invalidate your purchase of the selected license!

9 9 STEP 4) Setup Services In this step we will set up a Windows Service to automatically start the license server and enable the service to be started automatically every time the server is restarted. Before Setting up Services 1. Make sure you have performed the following steps including verifying license access from client computer: STEP 1) Create License File STEP 2) Start License Server STEP 3) Load Licenses Verify License from Client Computer If you have already created the license file you can skip STEP 1) Create License File. To verify if a valid file exists go to STEP 3) Load Licenses. 2. Go to STEP 2) Start License Server on the left panel and make sure to Stop License Server from right panel if it has been started. Stop License Server 3. The following message is displayed if the license server has been successfully terminated.

10 10 4. Verify the following license server program mecsoft.exe & rlm.exe is not running by going to the Processes tab in your Windows Task Manager. See STEP 2) Start License Server for more information. STEP 4) Setup Services 1. From the left panel in MecSoft Floating License Manager, select 4) Setup Services. STEP 4) Setup Services 2. From the right panel click Setup Windows Service.

11 11 Setup Window s Service The following message is displayed if the service is setup successfully. This will setup up a service and assign the name rlmmecsoft. You can verify this by going to the services under Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Services or by typing services.msc under Search programs and files from the Windows Start Menu. 3. Once the service has been successfully setup, select Start Windows Service to have the service started. By doing this above service will automatically

12 12 start every time the server is restarted. Start Window s Service A progress bar now appears as the service is being started. Start Window s Service The following message is displayed once the service has been successfully started. You can verify this by going to Services under Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Services or by typing services.msc under Search programs and files from the Windows Start Menu.

13 13 If the Services dialog is already open, you would need to refresh the dialog by selecting Action > Refresh or by selecting the Refresh button under the menu bar in the services dialog. Look for service by name: rlmmecsoft and check if the status is not set to Running. 4. Close the MecSoft Floating License Manager. 5. You can restart the server and verify to make sure the service has started and is running under Windows Services Utility. This completes the steps to setup the MecSoft Floating License Server. How to Stop and Start Services If for any reason you need to stop and restart the services: 1. Run MecSoft Floating License Manager and select 4) Setup Services from the left panel. Click Stop Windows Service from the right panel. Stop Window s Service 2. The following dialog is displayed once the service has been successfully

14 14 stopped. You can verify this by going to Services under Control Panel - System and Security - Administrative Tools - Services or by typing services.msc under Search programs and files from the Windows Start Menu. If the Services dialog is already open, you would need to refresh the dialog by selecting Action - Refresh or by selecting the Refresh button under the menu bar in the services dialog. Look for service by name: rlmmecsoft and check to make sure the status is not Running. Alternatively you can stop the service from Windows Services utility. 3. 15 15 Other Utilities This utility offers tools to run diagnostics like obtaining license server status, dump debug information about product licenses, re-read license file and remove license from a client machine. Step 5: Other Utilities MecSoft Floating License Server: Other Utilities Get License Server Status Selecting Get License Server Status displays the following information in the dialog which provides information about the licenses in use for each product. The information is useful for troubleshooting issues and can also be used to remove license from a client as it would list the client machine name, handle and port information.

16 16 Get License Server Status Debug Information Selecting Debug Information displays the following information in the dialog which provides information about the product licenses found on the server for each product & server status. Debug Inform ation Re-read License File Selecting Re-read License File displays the following information in the dialog.

17 17 Re-read License File Note after performing this step you would have to Stop and Start the Windows Service. Remove License This utility allows you to remove license that is checked out from a user on a client machine. To remove a license, you would need to know the Machine Name, Port # and Handle # of the client machine you are trying to remove license. You can obtain this information by selecting Get License Server Status.

18 18 Rem ove License The dialog shows 2 licenses in use. The Port # is same for both clients as this is obtained from the server. The machine name and handle # are different for each machine. Rem ove License To remove license for client machine name "demo" make a note of the Machine ID, Port # and Handle # as you would need this information and close this diagnostics dialog. Hint: You can copy & paste the information from diagnostic

19 19 window to notepad or any text editor. Now enter Machine ID: demo-win7x64 Port: Handle: 81 and click Remove License. Rem ove License A Diagnostics dialog would appear and provide you with the status of license removal. You can then run Get License Server Status to verify the license has been successfully removed. 20 20 Verify License After performing STEP 1) Create License File, STEP 2) Start License Server and STEP 3) Load Licenses using the MecSoft Floating License Manager, you can perform the following steps to ensure the client computer is able to access the license information from the server. 1. From a client machine that is on the network, open the MecSoft product your organization has purchased. 2. From the application's Main Menu, select License. The License dialog will display the License status information Type, Total # of Licenses, Customer Name, Customer ID, License Machine Location as Network and the Server Name. An example is shown below. Once the product is registered with a valid Activation Code, the following information is display on the License dialog: Type This refers to kind of license you have. This could be Demo License, Timed License or Perpetual License. The License Type will appear as Timed License if your license allows you to run the product for a certain number of days as defined by your license grant. If your license grant allows you to run the product in perpetuity the License Type will appear as Perpetual License. If you have not acquired a license for the product or if you run out of days left on your timed license grant the License Type will appear as Demo License. If this happens, the software will switch to operating in demo mode. Days Left This field indicates the number of days you can run the software before it starts operating in demo mode. To register the product you will need to request an Activation Code (see above). The Activation Code is unique to each product and machine.. Total # of Licenses This field should only contain a numerical value if you are running the MecSoft

21 21 Floating License Manager utility. Please follow the steps documented in the online help for this utility. Customer Name and ID The Customer Name is supplied when you register the product. The Customer ID is generated automatically. License Machine Location This will be set to Local unless you are running the MecSoft Floating License Manager utility. Please follow the steps documented in the online help for this utility. Server Name This field should only contain a numerical value if you are running the MecSoft Floating License Manager utility. If the Client machine is unable to Check Out a License from the Server If the client machine is unable to check out license from the server after you have performed STEP 1) Create License File, STEP 2) Start License Server and STEP 3) Load Licenses on the server machine, set up an environment variable on the client machine. 1. Go to Start > Control Panel > System & Security > System > Advanced System Settings. 2. From the System Properties dialog box that pops up click on the Environment Variables button at the bottom. 3. In the Environment Variables dialog box that appears, click on the New button under System variables. 4. In the New System Variable dialog box that pops up, define: Variable Name = RLM_LICENSE Variable Value = main-rlm-server-port#@server-hostname For example: 5053@Demo-SERVER Note: By default main-rlm-server port# is This information can be found by viewing the license file *.lic on the server machine at C: \ProgramData\MecSoft Corporation\MecSoft Floating License Manager. HOST line in the license file includes main-rlm-server-port#. For example: HOST Demo-SERVER disksn=xxxxx Close & restart the application to verify if client machine is able to check out license from the server. If the application is still unable to check out license from the server, perform the following steps on the server machine: 1. Stop license server by going to STEP 2) Start License Server in MecSoft

22 22 Floating License Manager. 2. Browse to C:\ProgramData\MecSoft Corporation\MecSoft Floating License Manager and edit the license file *.lic using notepad or any text editor. 3. Add the desired port # to the ISV line as follows: ISV isvname port=isv-port# For example: ISV mecsoft port=5052 Notes: a) The isv-port # cannot be the same as main-rlm-server-port#. b) By default the main-rlm-server-port# is set to 5053 on line HOST DemoSERVER disksn=xxxxx c) If you have another application that uses rlm and have a port conflict change the main-rlm-server-port# and isv-port# to a different one so there are no conflicts in port numbers. d) DO NOT edit or modify any another information in the license file other than adding isv-port# or changing main-rlm-server-port# as this would invalidate your license. 4. Save the license file. 5. If you have a firewall installed on the server node which is not allowing your application to access either the rlm port, or the port of the ISV server you must first configure your firewall to allow access to both the main rlm port, as well as the ISV server port. 6. From MecSoft Floating License manager, go to STEP 2) Start License Server. 7. Run the application from the client machine and check if the license is being checked out.
