2. Referencing Files and Sepng Op+ons GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 47
Defining SAS libraries To reference a permanent SAS file you: - Assign a name (libref) to the SAS library in which the file is stored - Use the libref as the first part of the file s two level name (libref.filename) To define libraries, you can use a LIBNAME statement LIBNAME NewLib '\\psf\home \Documents\My SAS Files\9.4'; PAY ATTENTION! A library assigned with the LIBNAME statement, remains in effect un+l you modify it, cancel it, ot you end your SAS session GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara1on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 48
Libref syntaxis GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 49
Defining SAS libraries You can also assign a library from the SAS Explorer window using: - Tools -> New Library - The icon New Library on the toolbar - The pop-up menu in the Explorer window Libraries created in these ways can be automa1cally assigned at startup by selec+ng Enable at Startup GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 50
Referencing files in other formats You can use the LIBNAME statement to reference files that were created with other souware products SAS can read or write these files by using the appropriate engine A SAS engine is an internal instruc1on that SAS uses for wri+ng and reading from files in a SAS library SAS support read-only access to BMDP, OSIRIS and SPSS files LIBNAME libref engine path ; N.B.: The physical name associated with a libref is an actual filename, not a SAS library LIBNAME spssfile SPSS '\\psf\home\documents\my SAS Files\ex.por'; PROC CONTENTS data=spssfile._first_; PROC PRINT data=spssfile._first_; GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 51
Seeing the content of a library You can: - explore the Explorer windows, using toolbars and pop-up menus - write a command in the editor GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 52
Seeing the content of a library: PROC CONTENTS period space - _ALL_ = to see all the files in the library - NODS = no details. You can specify it only when you specify _ALL_ GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 53
Seeing the content of a library: Procedure CONTENTS Equivalent output PROC CONTENTS DATA=sasuser._ALL_ NODS; Statement CONTENTS in Procedure DATASETS PROC DATASETS; QUIT; CONTENTS DATA=sasuser._ALL_ NODS; Differences: - The default for the DATA= op+on - Different statements (RUN and QUIT, not mandatory) for ending the procedure GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 54
Seeing the descrip+ve part of a dataset PROC CONTENTS DATA=sasuser.admit; PROC DATASETS; QUIT; CONTENTS DATA=sasuser.admit; By default, PROC CONTENTS and PROC DATASET list variables alphabe1cally. To list variable names in their crea1on order, you specify the VARNUM op+on, e.g.: PROC CONTENTS DATA=sasuser.empdata varnum; GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 55
Specifying Results Formats You can use the Preference window to set the result format that you prefer. To open this window: Tools -> Op+on -> Preferences -> Result GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 56
Sepng system op+ons You can: - use the global statement OPTIONS in the editor - use the toolbar: Tools -> Op+on -> System ->. GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 57
Sepng system op+ons using the OPTIONS statement You can change the op+ons in your lis1ng output submipng the OPTIONS global statement: OPTIONS op<ons ; The sepngs remain in effect un1ll you modify them, or un1ll you end your SAS session You can place the OPTIONS statement everywhere; However, it s good programming prac+ce to place it outside a DATA or PROC step GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 58
Some Op+ons DATE NODATE : print do not print date and +me in LISTING output NUMBER NONUMBER : print do not print page numbers - If op+on NUMBER is used, adding PAGENO= allows specifying the beginning page number PAGESIZE= : specifies how many lines each page of output contains LINESIZE= : specifies the width of your print line YEARCUTOFF= : specifies how to interpret two-digit year values. It does not affect 4-digit year values. - Default YEARCUTOFF=1926. This means that values from 00 to 25 are interpreted as years from 2000 to 2025 and values from 26 to 99 are interpreted as years from 1926 to 1999 PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.admit; OPTIONS number pageno=3 nodate ; PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.admit; OPTIONS nonumber pagesize=20 date ; PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.admit; OPTIONS nonumber pagesize=50 date ; GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 59
FIRSTOBS & OBS op+ons FIRSTOBS= : to start processing at a specific observa+on (default = 1) OBS= : to stop processing aker a specific observa+on (defaut = MAX) Ex: From now observa+ons from 10 to 15 will be printed each +me that PROC PRINT will be used OPTIONS firstobs=10 obs=15; PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.empdata; OPTIONS firstobs=1 obs=max; If you use the op+ons between parenthesis in the PROC PRINT, the op+on will work for an istance only: PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.empdata (firstobs=10 obs=15); The op+ons in the PROC statement override the op+ons in the OPTIONS statement OPTIONS firstobs=10 obs=15; PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.empdata (firstobs=10 obs=13); GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 60
Sepng system op+ons using the toolbar GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 61
Further Op+ons FORMCHAR : specifies the formapng characters for your output device, e.g. for the outlines of tables FORMDLIM : specifies a character used to delimit page breaks in SAS system output. Usually this characher is null: a new page starts whenever a page break occurs LABEL NOLABEL : permits SAS procedures to temporaly replace variable names by labels. If NOLABEL, then the LABEL OPTION is ignored. Default: LABEL REPLACE NOREPLACE : specifies whether permanently stored SAS datasets can be replaced. NOREPLACE prevents you to inadvertently replacing exis+ng SAS datasets. Default: REPLACE SOURCE NOSOURCE : controls whether SAS source statements are wriben to the SAS log. NOSOURCE specifies not to write SAS source statements to the SAS log. Default: SOURCE GIORGIO RUSSOLILLO - Cours de prépara+on à la cer+fica+on SAS «Base Programming» 62
