9. Producing HTML output 208

The Output Delivery System (ODS) With ODS, you can easily create output in a variety of formats including: - HyperText Markup Language (HTML) output - RTF output - PDF output - SAS LISTING output 209

What ODS does When you submit your ODS statement and run the SAS program that creates an output, the ODS: 1. Creates your output in the form of output objects, that: - Contains the results of a PROC or a DATA step (Data component) - Can also contain informa+on about how to render the results (Table defini+on) 2. Sends the output object to the ODS des+na+on(s) that you specify and creates the formabed output 3. Creates a link to each output object in the Result window 210

ODS Des+na+ons & Outputs - You use ODS statement to specify des+na+ons for your output. - Each des+na+on creates a specific type of formabed output 211

Open and close ODS des+na+ons PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.admit; The above program creates HTML and LISTING outputs because HTML and LISTING des+na+ons are open In general, to open and close des+na+ons, you need the following statements: ODS des<na<on <op<ons>; ODS HTML; ODS LISTING; ODS des<na<on CLOSE; ODS LISTING CLOSE; You can close all the open des+na+ons using the _ALL_ keyword: ODS _ALL_ CLOSE; 212

Crea+ng HTML output: the ODS HTML stamenent file-specifica<on can be: ODS HTML BODY= file-specifica<on ; - A quoted string which contains the HTML filename - A quoted string which contains the complete directory path and the HTML filename - A fileref that has been previously assigned to an HTML file - A SAS catalog in the form name.html if the catalog libref.name is specified on the PATH= op+on N.B.: FILE= is an alias for BODY= 213

Example: Crea+ng an HTML file with output from one or mul+ple procedures ODS HTML BODY='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\TableCountry.html'; PROC FREQ DATA=Lib9_3.sales; TABLES Country; ODS HTML; ODS HTML BODY='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\mydata.html'; PROC FREQ DATA=Lib9_3.sales; TABLES Country; PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.admit; ODS HTML; 214

Crea+ng file readable by Adobe, Excel and Word ODS PDF FILE="\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myoutputs\means_pdf.pdf"; ODS CSVALL FILE="\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myoutputs\means_csv.csv"; ODS RTF FILE="\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myoutputs\means_rv.rv"; PROC MEANS DATA=Lib9_3.sales ; VAR Salary; CLASS Gender Country; ODS PDF CLOSE ; ODS CSVALL CLOSE ; ODS RTF CLOSE ; ODS des0na0on FILE= file-specifica<on ; From now we focus on HTML des+na+on 215

Crea+ng an HTML file with a table of contents A table of contents contains a numbered heading of each procedure that creates output ODS HTML BODY=file-specifica<on CONTENTS=contents-specifica<on FRAME=frame-specifica<on; - contents-specifica<on :Is the name of a HTML file that contains a table of contents with links to the procedure output - frame-specifica<on :Is the name of a HTML file that integrates the table of contents and the body file 216

Crea+ng the table of contents: An example In the program below, - the BODY= op+on creates mydata.html. This file contains the results of the two procedures. - the CONTENTS= op+on creates datatoc.html This file, which contains links to each output, generates a ToC. - the FRAME= op+on creates dataframe.html. This file integrates the table of contents and the body file. ODS HTML BODY=file-specifica<on CONTENTS=contents-specifica<on FRAME=frame-specifica<on; ODS HTML BODY='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\mydata.html' CONTENTS='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\datatoc.html' FRAME='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\dataframe.html'; PROC FREQ DATA=Lib9_3.sales; TABLES Country; PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.admit; To see the frame files, search them in the Explorer windows and open them 217

The URL sub-op+on When ODS generates HTML files, it also generates links between the files using the filenames specified in the ODS HTML statement ODS HTML BODY=file-specifica<on CONTENTS=contents-specifica<on FRAME=frame-specifica<on; These links work if you view the files locally. If you want to place these files on a Web server, then the link needs to include the URL ( Uniform Resource Locator ) ODS HTML BODY=file-specifica<on (URL= url-specifica<on ) CONTENTS=contents-specifica<on (URL= url-specifica<on ) FRAME=frame-specifica<on; 218

URL sub-op+on specifica+on (URL=url-specifica<on) This sub-op+on creates absolute and rela+ve links addresses for loading the files from a server The URL subop+on can specify: - Only the HTML filename (rela+ve URL). The links will work as long as the files are all in the same loca+on - A complete (absolute) URL. The links will work even if the files are stored in different loca+ons ODS HTML BODY='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\mydata.html (URL= mydata.html ) CONTENTS='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\datatoc.html (URL= datatoc.html ) FRAME='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\dataframe.html ; N.B.: You cannot use the URL= subop+on in FRAME= op+on because no ODS file references the frame file 219

URL specifica+ons: Examples Rela1ve URL : it contains only the HTML filename ODS HTML BODY='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\mydata.html (URL= mydata.html ) CONTENTS='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\datatoc.html (URL= datatoc.html ) FRAME='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\dataframe.html ; Absolute URL : it specifies the complete URL using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) ODS HTML BODY='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\mydata.html (URL= hbp://mysite.com/myreports/mydata.html ) CONTENTS='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\datatoc.html (URL= hbp://mysite.com/mytocs/datatoc.html ) FRAME='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\dataframe.html ; 220

The PATH= op+on The PATH= op+on in the ODS HTML statements specifies the loca+on where you want to store your HTML output PATH= file-path <URL=NONE URL-specifica<on > - file-loca<on-specifica<on iden+fies the loca+on where you want HTML files to be saved. It can be one of the following: - the complete pathname to an aggregate storage loca+on, such as a directory or par++oned data set - a fileref (file shortcut) that has been assigned to a storage loca+on - a SAS catalog (libname.catalog). - Uniform-Resource-Locator provides a URL for links in the HTML files that ODS generates. If you specify the keyword NONE, no informa+on from the PATH= op+on appears in the links or references. - If you do not use the URL= subop+on, informa+on from the PATH= op+on is added to links and references in the BODY and CONTENTS files that are created - The URL= subop+on provides an URL for links in the HTML files that ODS generates - The URL=NONE subop+on prevents ODS from using the pathname in any links that it creates in your files 221

PATH= op+on without URL= subop+on : Example ODS HTML PATH='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs BODY='mydata.html' CONTENTS='datatoc.html' FRAME='dataframe.html'; PROC FREQ DATA=Lib9_3.sales; TABLES Country; PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.admit; PATH= op+on without URL= subop+on: The links from the FRAME file to BODY and CONTENTS files contain the complete filenames '\\psf\home\documents\my SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\mydata.html and '\\psf\home\documents\my SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\datatoc.html 222

PATH=op+on + URL=NONE : Example ODS HTML PATH='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs' URL=NONE BODY='mydata.html' CONTENTS='datatoc.html' FRAME='dataframe.html'; PROC FREQ DATA=Lib9_3.sales; TABLES Country; PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.admit; PATH=op+on + URL=NONE (useful if you intend to move your HTML files): The links from the FRAME file to BODY and CONTENTS files contain only mydata.html and datatoc.html 223

PATH= op+on + a specified URL : Example ODS HTML PATH='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs (URL= hbp://mysite.com/myreports ) BODY= mydata.html CONTENTS= datatoc.html FRAME= dataframe.html ; PROC FREQ DATA=Lib9_3.sales; TABLES Country; PROC PRINT DATA=sasuser.admit; PATH= op+on + a specified URL: The links from the frame file to body and content files contain the specified URL hbp://mysite.com/myreports/mydata.html and hbp://mysite.com/myreports/datatoc.html respec+vely 224

Changing the appearance of HTML Output You can specify a pre-determined style using the STYLE= op+on in the ODS HTML statement: ODS HTML STYLE= style-name BODY= file-specifica<on (URL= url-specifica<on ) CONTENTS= contents-specifica<on (URL= url-specifica<on ) FRAME= frame-specifica<on ; Style defini+ons: - Banker - BarrebsBlue - Default - HTMLblue - Minimal - Sta+s+cal ODS HTML STYLE=Minimal BODY='\\psf\Home\Documents\My SAS Files\myHTMLoutputs\mydata.html' ; PROC FREQ DATA=Lib9_3.sales; TABLES Country; ODS HTML STYLE=htmlblue ; You can costumize the output of tables, columns, headers,.., using the TEMPLATE procedure 225
