3 Setting up tools Find path of Android SDK Default paths: Windows - C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Android\sdk Mac - /Users/<username>/Library/Android/sdk Linux - /home/<username>/android-sdk

4 Setting up tools Need to add path of Android SDK dirs to $PATH environment variable ex. Linux/Mac: ANDROID_SDK=/home/yannes/android-sdk export PATH=${PATH}:${ANDROID_SDK}/platform-tools export PATH=${PATH}:${ANDROID_SDK}/tools export PATH=${PATH}:${ANDROID_SDK}/build-tools/ export PATH=${PATH}:${ANDROID_SDK}/emulator ex. Windows: set ANDROID_SDK=C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Android\sdk set PATH=%PATH%;%ANDROID_SDK%\platform-tools set PATH=%PATH%;%ANDROID_SDK%\tools set PATH=%PATH%;%ANDROID_SDK%\build-tools\ set PATH=%PATH%;%ANDROID_SDK%\emulator

5 Android SDK commands platform-tools/: connecting and controlling devices through cmdline tools/: Manage sdk packages and emulator build-tools/version/: build and optimize APKs

6 platform-tools/ adb - Android Debug Bridge, interact with device/emulator $ adb install Countdown.apk fastboot - used to flash partitions $ fastboot flash recovery twrp.img sqlite3 - interact with databases $ adb pull /data/data/.../data.db $ sqlite data.db Tracing (dmtracedump, systrace) $ dmtracedump trace-file.trace $ python systrace/systrace.py

7 tools/ android - Open SDK Manager, AVD Manager, create project, etc (Android Studio functions) $ android update sdk (DEPRECATED) $ sdkmanager --update emulator - Start emulator emulator -avd Armv7 -show-kernel -no-boot-anim monitor - new DDMS, monitor device, send SMS/MMS/GPS/Calls, take screenshot Not really cmdline, just alternative to Android Studio screenshot2 - take screenshot of device or emulator

8 Android Debug Bridge Interact with device/emulator Uses client-server framework adb starts server on PC Default port 5037 Customize by setting ANDROID_ADB_SERVER_PORT environment variable adb [cmd] - sends command to emulator

9 Android Debug Bridge Common uses: adb [cmd] devices - list devices/emulators push/pull <file> - send or recv file logcat - Get logcat output from device install <apk> - install apk uninstall <package> - uninstall app shell - start terminal on device

10 Screen Recording of a Device Helpful for Project demos Only works for physical devices Emulators do not have required libraries Will need to turn on Debugging mode Open Android Studio or Monitor/DDMS Click Start Recording Recording screen on device

11 Screen Recording of a Device Can also screen record from ADB adb shell screenrecord [options] <filename> Options for video size, bit rate, and time limit ex. adb shell screenrecord /sdcard/temp.mp3 Pull file from device: adb pull /sdcard/temp.mp3

12 Screen Recording cont d Use AirDroid or TeamViewer apps Lets you control device over WiFi Can view AND interact with screen using web app or desktop app Use desktop screen-recording software

13 Gradle Build tool for Android Similar to Make Groovy-based language Highly configurable can create custom build steps ex. Rename apk, launch apk Splits project (and dependencies) into modules, compiles each module as needed Each module contains build.gradle, similar to separate builds having separate Makefiles

14 Gradle Usage:./gradlew [option ] [task ] ex../gradlew build installdebug Builds dependencies first, similar to Make Builds apks, by default debug and release apks, and then installs the debug apk installdebug task dependent on build task, could just call./gradlew installdebug which runs gradle build Or:./gradlew --gui

15 Gradle Easily add dependencies (all.jar in libs/): compile filetree(dir: 'libs', include: ['*.jar']) Or external library: compile 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:24.2.1' Gradle runs lint after compilation To ignore lint warnings (not recommended for release version): lintoptions { } abortonerror false

16 Gradle Good practice to occasionally test app from clean install./gradlew uninstallall Remove all flavors of apk (release, debug, etc)./gradlew installdebug/installrelease/install Builds apk(s) and installs./gradlew clean Removes apk and dependencies (build directory)
