For Windows-centric environments, VERITAS Software offers VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers. For -centric environments, VERITAS Backup Exec for provides best-of-breed data protection. For small to large-scale heterogeneous environments, VERITAS Software delivers VERITAS NetBackup Server and Enterprise Server that offer unparalleled backup and recovery performance for UNIX, Windows and Linux environments from a central administrative interface. 4 POSITIONING This document provides a guideline for determining which VERITAS data protection application or combination of applications is best suited for a particular customer s requirements. The combination of VERITAS products, such as VERITAS Backup Exec and VERITAS NetBackup, offer an award winning combination that EMC/Legato, IBM/Tivoli, Hewlett-Packard, CommVault, Computer Associates, and many other competitors simply cannot match. When determining what backup products to present, you should ask a series of questions to help determine the needs of the customer. VERITAS sales and resellers should identify key areas of differentiation that will help the customer decide which is the best VERITAS solution for their environment. The right product can be quickly identified by drilling down on the following subjects and discussing these issues with the customer: Operating systems deployed Homogeneous or heterogeneous network environment Ease of use requirements (implementation, installation, maintenance) Need or expectations regarding for consulting services and support Consolidation objectives (backup and recovery products, hardware, etc.) Customization requirements Deployed applications groupware, databases and ERP applications Amount or size of data being protected Performance needs (both backup and recovery) Storage area network (SAN) and/or network attached storage (NAS) requirements Backup window constraints Vaulting (offsite) practices Budget constraints Note: Confusion mainly exists in the Windows market between VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers and VERITAS NetBackup. While both products offer robust features for the Windows customer, the customer profiles are different. VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers is dominant in Windows-centric environments, while VERITAS NetBackup is targeted at the data-intensive, enterprise customer. VERITAS NetBackup also is best suited for customers who wish to use one product in a heterogeneous environment. 4

Customer has NDMP-enabled Network Attached Storage (NAS), plus a need for online database protection for any of the following: Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, Exchange Server, Informix and Sybase. Deployed tape storage consists of any number of standalone tape drives and/or tape stackers, autoloaders, tape robots. Customer or prospect does not require the ability to share tape libraries or virtualize tape drives. Ideal for remote offices requiring backup that may already have NetBackup Enterprise Server deployed in the data center. Customer purchases through: primarily direct or enterprise resellers 3. 7 5. What do I recommend to a customer who wants VERITAS Backup Exec, but has Windows and servers? Identify if the customer wants a backup solution hosted on a Windows platform, platform or both. If the customer desires a Windows-hosted backup platform, VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers has the Remote Agent (CAL) for Servers that allows servers to be backed up to the Windows backup server. Conversely, if the customer wants a -hosted backup platform, VERITAS Backup Exec for has the Remote Agent (CAL) for Windows Servers that allows Windows servers to be backed up to the backup server. If Windows and are to be managed independently in multiple locations, recommend VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers and VERITAS Backup Exec for respectively for each independent location. 6. What do I recommend to a customer requiring mailbox/folder-level Microsoft Exchange backup/restore? This will depend on the size and business requirements of the customer as both VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers and VERITAS NetBackup offer optional Exchange agents. These agents provide fast backup and restore a complete mailbox/folder online, as well as enable individual mailbox backup and restore protection of embedded messages, objects and all Outlook components. VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers and VERITAS NetBackup provide the ability to restore individual mail messages. As additional protection, you can use the new Desktop and Laptop Options for both VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers and VERITAS NetBackup to back up the individual personal Outlook files that employees maintain on their desktops or laptops, because this information is not stored on the Exchange server and is at risk of exposure to loss. This is especially important with the new compliance laws being enforced. The Exchange Agent for both Backup Exec and NetBackup also provides single instance storage, as well as a global exclude functionality, providing greater granularity when doing backups, and significantly reducing backup and restore windows. 7. (VERITAS has upgrade SKU pricing for those customers who require moving from VERITAS Backup Exec to VERITAS NetBackup ) If the customer has CA ARCserve and VERITAS Backup Exec in distributed environments, suggest consolidation to VERITAS Backup Exec for improved backup and recovery windows, as well as centralized monitoring and management with Backup Exec ExecView and Remote Administration. Be sure to leverage Backup Exec s ability to read ARCserve media as a selling point to emphasize investment protection. If there is Exchange in the environment, be sure to identify VERITAS fast backup and restores with single instance storage, global excludes, and individual mailbox backup and restore. If the customer has VERITAS Backup Exec and EMC/Legato NetWorker, suggest VERITAS NetBackup and to displace EMC/Legato NetWorker. If a customer has either VERITAS Backup Exec or VERITAS NetBackup and IBM TSM, suggest VERITAS NetBackup to displace IBM TSM. In either case, leverage the idea of the Backup Exec Tape Reader, included within VERITAS NetBackup at no additional charge, as a selling point to emphasize investment protection. If the customer has VERITAS NetBackup and CA ARCserve in distributed environments, suggest VERITAS NetBackup for the entire environment. Beware of cost consciousness within this type of deployment traditional CA ARCserve customers may have financial reservations with a network wide replacement with VERITAS NetBackup. If that is the case, recommend VERITAS Backup Exec. If the customer has VERITAS NetBackup and CommVault Galaxy in distributed environments, suggest VERITAS NetBackup for the entire environment. 8

9 If the customer is happy with VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers and VERITAS Backup Exec for and has UNIX requirements, suggest adding VERITAS NetBackup Enterprise Server or VERITAS NetBackup Server. 10. What if the customer s environment requires UNIX, Windows, Linux and? VERITAS NetBackup should be recommended to mid to large customers who require centralized management for mixed heterogeneous operating system environments. 11. What do I recommend to a customer with very large databases on UNIX, Windows or Linux? VERITAS NetBackup should be recommended because it offers optional online backup through agents available for major databases and applications running on UNIX, Windows and, in many cases, Linux. 12. When would I want to recommend VERITAS NetBackup to a current VERITAS Backup Exec customer? When the customer is looking for centralized management of backup servers in a heterogeneous environment, has large databases, requires multiplexing or is considering replacing Backup Exec with Legato NetWorker, IBM/Tivoli Storage Manager or HP Data Protector.
