3 What s New in Android JoinNet 2.0 Desktop Sharing Remote Control Desktop Sharing from PC JoinNet to Android JoinNet is supported, but not vice versa. Remote Control of PC JoinNet by Android JoinNet is supported, but not vice versa. on-screen mouse Android JoinNet utilizes the on-screen mouse during the remote control session; for example, touch the move circle to drag the mouse and touch the keyboard icon to bring up the on-screen keyboard for text input (devicedependent). When moving the on-screen mouse, you have to make sure the cursor of the on-screen mouse (yellow) and that of the remote desktop (white) are merged into one before taking any action such as left click or right click the lag is usually caused by network delay. The only difference is the GUI design as depicted below: Bring Up Browser Most of the time Joint Web Browser works well except to play YouTube video which is an unknown bug related to flash player. A roundabout solution is to bring up the system browser for YouTube video playback: just select Tool ( ) and then Browser to change to normal browser then using Back ( ) to return to JoinNet. 6 Installation Android JoinNet can be installed on android devices, either mobile phone or tablet, with different user interface. In this user guide, the interface of android tablet will be used. Since android JoinNet is a non-market application, user has to install it manually. Please be sure to follow these steps to install android JoinNet: 1. Under Setting select Applications and then check Unknown Sources to allow installation of non-market applications. 2. Download JoinNet_(version).apk to your android mobile device and click on the android application package (apk) to start installation. There are three application packages of android JoinNet; namely, package for android 2.3, for android 3.1 and for android 4.0. 7 Launch (Exit) JoinNet Since the android version of HomeMeeting Messenger won t be available until 2013, right now the only way to launch android JoinNet is by clicking the visit URL to download a JNJ file, either on an or on a webpage. Here are the example screen shots for launching android JoinNet: 1. Click on the user name at the webpage of a Web Office server; select JoinNet as an action. 2. JoinNet will be launched automatically. Select Visitor and type in name to visit someone s web office. Click OK to wait for permission to enter a web office. 8 3. When meeting ended by the meeting owner, first OK the Session is Over, then click on the Android File Menu at the bottom and finally select Exit JoinNet. HomeMeeting Document: JoinNet User s Guide for Android 6

9 User Interface Though the user interface of android JoinNet looks very different to that of PC JoinNet, the design principle is quite similar: Tile panel, Presenter area and audio/video indicator-- each text color corresponding to the color frame used in the diagram. Tile Panel There are five Tiles in the Tile Panel: Self-View, Video, User, e-board, and Text Tiles. Self-View for video captured by your own android device; Video for video streamed from MCU, User for user list (i.e. Control Panel), e-board for selecting White Board, Joint Web Browser, Shared desktop and Remote Control, and finally Text for text chat. You can scroll down and up the Tile Panel and touch a Tile to select the function assigned to it. Presenter Area Audio/Video Indicator When a Tile is touched or selected, the Presenter area will display the function associated with the Tile. Similar to PC JoinNet, there is a click-to-talk button. If you become a talker, the microphone volume indicator becomes active as that of PC JoinNet. The speaker volume indicates receiving audio data from MCU. To adjust the speaker volume, you need to use the device volume control. HomeMeeting Document: JoinNet User s Guide for Android 7

10 Some Basics Since this document is a supplement to the JoinNet user guide for the Windows version, only some basic functions are covered here. Experienced JoinNet users should find it straightforward to use the other standard functions as they do when using the Windows version of JoinNet. Are you talking? At the Audio/Video Indicator: Indicates you are not talking. Click to talk. Indicate you are talking. Click to end talking. Click to allow talker (for Token Holder only). Mute microphone. Click to un-mute microphone. Add Slide To add slide to the Whiteboard, click the Tool button and select Add Slide. Select a file to become pages of slides at the Whiteboard. Note this: there is no JoinNet printer driver for android. Once a file is selected to become slides at the Whiteboard, instead of using JoinNet printer driver to print the file locally to pages of slides, android JoinNet uploads the HomeMeeting Document: JoinNet User s Guide for Android 8

11 selected file to a Conversion server which converts the file to pages of slides and sends the slides to MCU. In order to use Add Slide, your MCU server must be configured with a Conversion server. See the next section for setting up a Conversion server. Change Slide Once slides are uploaded to the Whiteboard, you can click the slide name to pull down a list of slides and select the slide you want to view. 12 Mark on Slide If you are a Talker, you need to turn on the marker icon to mark on slide. By default the mark icon is off so that you can use touch screen finger gesture for zoom-in and zoomout, or move the slide around. Say Cheese! Taking real-time snapshot by using the built-in camera on an android mobile device is a fun way to upload slide to the Whiteboard. Just click the Self View tile to put it to the Presenter area; click the Camera button to enable realtime snapshot; click the Shot button to take picture; then finally upload the image to the Whiteboard. How about using Stylus? Did you notice that there are some Tiles with a small red triangle at the bottom right of it? 13 hard to touch it by finger precisely. Try to touch this small button with a stylus and you will find a bigger Tile! Bigger Self-View Tile! Bigger Video Tile! Bigger User Tile and Bigger Text Tile! The purpose of bigger tile is to allow user viewing the e-board at the same time while using the functions from other Tiles. HomeMeeting Document: JoinNet User s Guide for Android 11

14 Conversion Server for Android JoinNet File conversion is very CPU-intensive and may significantly affect the quality of an ongoing meeting if the conversion server runs on the same hardware as the MCU server. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to setup conversion servers at a standalone computer. There is no data encryption between MCU and the conversion server. Please note that if a JoinNet user uploads a big file for conversion and then leaves the meeting, the conversion will be continued and the slides will be displayed even the user already left the meeting. Also note that, once the meeting owner terminates a meeting, all the on-going conversions will be cancelled. Generally speaking, the conversion may take a few seconds or minutes, or even longer, depending on the total page number and DPI (dot per inch) setting killing this conversion process may cause unstable conversion. Right now, MCU does not restrict the page number, but does forbid DPI more than HomeMeeting Document: JoinNet User s Guide for Android 12

15 Conversion Server Setup Some components must be installed before setting up the conversion server. The conversion server use OpenOffice to convert all sorts of document to pdf file and then use ImageMagick to convert the pdf file to one or more jpg files. For Windows OS: 1) Download and install OpenOffice from 2) Download and install GhostScript from 3) Download and install ImageMagick from 4) Edit configm.ini for entries python_path=c:/program Files (x86)/openoffice.org 3/program/python.exe convert_path=c:/program Files (x86)/imagemagick Q16/convert.exe (Replace the path for python.exe and convert.exe according to your installation destination.) 5) Manually test unoconv component (optional): Find a target document such as test.doc, in command line: "~python_path/python.exe" "~mcu_path/unoconv" -f pdf "~path/test.doc" Then a file test.pdf should be created. 6) Manually test convert component (optional): After test.pdf is created, in command line: "~convert_path/convert.exe" "~path/test.pdf" "~path/test.jpg" Then one or more jpg file should be created. 7) Edit configm.ini for entry max_conversion_thread= Note: One must configure the maximum conversion thread based on how powerful the computer is. 8) Edit configm.ini for entry conversion_allow= HomeMeeting Document: JoinNet User s Guide for Android 13

16 Note: To associate a MCU with the conversion server, add its IP address to this entry. For Linux OS: 1) Most Linux boxes already have OpenOffice installed. If not, manually install a complete OpenOffice package, including core, spreadsheet, presentation, word processor, langugages packages, pyuno, etc. Note, the installation of OpenOffice may need graphic interface. 2) Most Linux boxes already have ImageMagick installed. If not, manually install the ImageMagick package. 3) Manually test unoconv component (optional): Find a target document such as test.doc, in command line: ~mcu_path/unoconv -f pdf "~path/test.doc" Then a file test.pdf should be created. 4) Manually test convert component (optional): After test.pdf is created, in command line: convert "~path/test.pdf" "~path/test.jpg" Then one or more jpg file should be created. 5) Edit configm.ini for entry max_conversion_thread= Note: One must configure the maximum conversion thread based on how powerful the computer is. 6) Edit configm.ini for entry conversion_allow= Note: To associate a MCU with the conversion server, add its IP address to this entry.
