OVERVIEW The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility installs to the target system the Windows* INF files that outline to the operating system how the chipset components will be configured. This is needed for the proper functioning of the following features: - Core PCI and ISAPNP Services - AGP Support - IDE/ATA33/ATA66 Storage Support - USB Support - Identification of Intel Chipset Components in Device Manager * 2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 1. The software included with this distribution package is designed to operate with the following chipset configurations: Intel(R) 810 Chipset Intel(R) 810E Chipset Intel(R) 815 Chipset Intel(R) 815E Chipset

One of the following operating systems must be installed on the system: Windows (Original release) Windows a (OSR1) Windows b (OSR2 without USB Supplement) Windows b (OSR2.1 with USB Supplement) Windows c (OSR2.5 with or without USB Supplement) Windows (Original release) Windows 98 Second Edition (Original release) Windows (Original release) Windows ME (Original release) To verify which operating system has been installed onto the target system, follow the steps below: a. Click on Start. b. Select Settings. c. Select Control Panel. d. Double-click on the System icon. e. Click on the General system properties tab. f. Verify which OS has been installed by reading the System information. 3. The software should be installed on systems with at least 32 MB of system memory.

4 4. There should be sufficient hard disk space in the <TEMP> directory (typically C:\WINDOWS\TEMP) of the system on which this software is installed. Please check with your system provider to determine which operating system and Intel chipset are used in your system. * 3. INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE This software can be installed in two modes: Interactive or Silent. The Interactive Mode requires user input during installation; the Silent Mode does not. Additionally, this software offers a set of command line flag options that enable extended installation functionality. The command line flags are not case-sensitive. See Section 3C for detailed descriptions of these flags. Important Note: The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility is distributed in two formats -- self extracting.exe files (INFINST_xxx.EXE) or compressed.zip files (INFINST_xxx.ZIP). Depending on which distribution format is being executed, the command-line syntax may differ. See Section 3C for more details. * 3A. INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN INTERACTIVE MODE 1. Check the System Requirements. The operating system must be fully installed and running on the system before running this software. 2. Close any running applications. Otherwise, you may experience difficulties. 3. Run the InstallShield* installation program: Self-extracting.EXE distribution: INFINST_xxx.EXE Compressed.ZIP distribution : SETUP.EXE 4. You will be prompted to agree to the license agreement. If you do not agree, the Installer will exit before extracting any files.

5 5. Follow the on-screen instructions and use the default settings to complete the setup, once the operating system has rebooted. 6. This completes the installation of the Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility. * 3B. INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN SILENT MODE 1. Check the System Requirements. The operating system must be fully installed and running on the system before running this software. 2. Close any running applications. Otherwise, you may experience difficulties. 3. Run the InstallShield installation program: For silent install with auto-reboot: Self-extracting.EXE distribution: INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -b -s Compressed.ZIP distribution : SETUP.EXE -b -s - OR - For silent install without auto-reboot: Self-extracting.EXE distribution: INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -s Compressed.ZIP distribution : SETUP.EXE -s 4. The utility will perform the necessary updates and record the installation status in the following system registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel\INFInst 5. If the utility was invoked with the "-b" flag, the system will automatically reboot if the update was successful. NOTE: The system MUST be rebooted for all device updates to take effect. 6. To determine whether the install was successful, verify the 'install' value in the registry key specified in Step 5. The following table describes the various parameter values: Value Type Data Description "install" String "success" The installation was successful.

6 "fail" The installation was not successful. No INF files were copied to the system. "reboot" String "Yes" A reboot is required to complete the installation. "No" No reboot is required to complete the installation. "version" String <varies> Current version number of the Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility * 3C. LIST OF AVAILABLE COMMAND LINE FLAG OPTIONS The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility supports several command line flags for various installation options. All command line flags and parameters must be separated by a space, except for the language code after the '-L' flag. Due to the different distribution formats available for the Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility, the command line flag syntax may vary: 1. Self-Extracting.EXE Distribution: When installing this software using the.exe distribution, an extra '-A' must be appended to the INFINST_xxx.EXE program call (i.e. INFINST_ENU.EXE -A) in order to successfully pass command line parameters. The extra '-A' flag for the self-extracting.exe package is DIFFERENT from the '-A' command line flag option described below. Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag described below, the installation program should be invoked as follows: INFINST_ENU.EXE -A -A (optional -P) 2. Compressed.ZIP Distribution: When installing this software using the.zip distribution, there is no need to append any extra flags to the SETUP.EXE program call in order to pass command line flags. Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag

7 described below, the installation program should be invoked as follows: SETUP.EXE -A (optional -P) Below is a list of all the available command line flags that may be used with the program call. Note that the '-L' and the '-S' flags MUST be specified at the end of the command line flag list. Flag Description ? Help flag. Displays the list of available command line flags. This parameter works in the Interactive mode only. -A Extracts INF files, README.TXT and instructions for OEM preload (PRELOAD.TXT) to either "C:\Program Files\Intel\InfInst" or the <Installation Path> directory specified using the '-P' flag. The software will NOT install these INF files to the system. This flag can be combined only with the '-P' flag option. All other options will be ignored if the '-A' flag is specified. This parameter works in either Silent mode or Interactive mode. -B Automatically reboots the system after installation. This flag is ignored if '-A' flag is specified. This parameter works in either Silent mode or Interactive mode. -L<LangCode> Forces the InstallShield user interface to display the specified language during setup. Note that there should be NO spaces between '-L' and the 4-digit language code (see below). This flag and the '-S' flag must be placed at the end of the command line flag list. This parameter works in Interactive mode only. -P <Installation Path> Specifies the HDD location to which the INF program files are copied. If this flag is not specified at the command line, the <Installation Path> directory is by default assumed to be: C:\Program Files\Intel\INFInst If this flag is used without the

8 '-A' option, only README.TXT will be copied to <Installation Path>. The directory name can include spaces. In this case, however, a pair of double quotes (") must enclose the directory name. This parameter works in either Silent mode or Interactive mode. -S Runs the Installer in silent mode. No user interface is displayed. This flag and the '-L' flag must be placed at the end of the command line flag list. -H PM/PS/SM/SS Enables DMA mode for IDE devices. The IDE devices can be specified using the following 2-letter codes: PM: Primary Master PS: Primary Slave SM: Secondary Master SS: Secondary Slave One or more devices can be specified, with a forward slash (/) as the device separator. The software behavior is not defined if the device(s) specified does not exist on the system, or if a channel has no master but only a slave device populated. This flag is ignored if the '-A' flag is specified. This parameter works in either Silent mode or Interactive mode. -I Forces the system's driver signing policy to IGNORE during installation. This parameter works in either Silent mode or Interactive mode. VERIFYING INSTALLATION OF THE SOFTWARE Run Device Manager to verify the correct installation and usage of the INF files. For Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows 98 Second Edition: 1. Click on Start. 2. Select Settings. 3. Select Control Panel. 4. Double-click on System icon. 5. Click on Device Manager tab. 6. Click on View Devices by Connection button. 7. Click on Plug and Play BIOS, or Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) BIOS. 8. Click on PCI bus. For Windows 2000: 1. Click on Start. 2. Select Settings. 3. Select Control Panel. 4. Double-click on System icon. 5. Click on Hardware tab. 6. Click on Device Manager button. 7. From the View menu, select menu item Devices by connection. 8. Click on Standard PC, or Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC. 9. Click on PCI bus. After the Device Manager is launched as described above, check the descriptions for the following entries: *** NOTE: Device Manager will display only the names of devices currently detected in the system.

The version of the software included in the distribution package can also be identified by examining the following registry location: Key name: \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel\InfInst Value name: version * 7. TROUBLESHOOTING It is assumed that the system requirements in Section 2 above have been satisfied. Issue: System locks up during Device Manager Remove or during restart. Solution: System lockup can occur during Restart as a result of several possible system issues. In the event of system lockup, restart the machine and view Device Manager. If devices are listed properly and the system experiences no further problems, then the.inf file restore process was successful. If devices are not configured correctly, try re-running the procedures outlined in Section 3. If this does not fix problems or further problems are experienced, reinstall the operating system. Issue: After running the setup program and rebooting the machine, Windows reports that it cannot find one of the following files: ESDI_506.pdr Solution: Click Browse in the dialog box where this problem occurs, locate the <Windows>\System\IOSubsys directory and click OK. The system should be able to locate this file in this directory

16 and continue re-enumerating for the new devices. Issue: After running the setup program and rebooting the machine, Windows reports that it cannot find one of the following files: UHCD.SYS USBD.SYS USBHUB.SYS Solution: Click Browse in the dialog box where this problem occurs, locate the <Windows>\System32\drivers (for Windows 98, Windows ME) -or- <Windows>\System (for Windows 95) directory, and click OK. The system should be able to locate this file in this directory and continue re-enumerating for the new devices. Issue: During setup, installation stops and prompts for one of the following files: UHCD.SYS USBD.SYS USBHUB.SYS Solution: Ensure that the Windows 95 USB Supplement has been installed prior to running the Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility setup program. Issue: After running the setup program and rebooting the machine, Windows reports that it cannot find the following file: isapnp.vxd Solution: Click Browse in the dialog box where this problem occurs, locate the <Windows>\System directory, and click OK. The system should be able to locate this file in this directory and continue re-enumerating for the new devices.

17 Issue: After performing the silent install, the HKLM\Software\Intel\InfInst key was not created or the data of the value "install" is not "success". Solution: This is caused by one of the following scenarios: - The current system does not contain a supported operating system, or - The current system does not contain a supported chipset. 20 Overview The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility was developed for updating Windows* Operating Systems with the Plug and Play feature on Intel chipsets. The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility is not required or compatible with Operating Systems without the Plug and Play feature, such as Windows NT* 4.0. This utility allows the operating system to correctly identify the Intel chipset components and properly configure the system. The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility installs specific Windows INF files. The INF files inform the operating system how to properly configure the chipset for specific functionality, such as AGP, USB, Core PCI, and ISA PnP services. For more details about the specific INF files that are updated, please refer to the readme.txt file that is included with the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility for Intel chipsets. These Release Notes outline the new features and key changes of this software since the last release. 24 ID Information 1 This software will install the ICHxSMB.INF file on systems running Windows 98 Second Edition, even though the SMBus device is natively supported by the OS. This is done to allow the easy update of any future SMBus driver. 2 During the Windows setup stage, the USB keyboard and mouse may not be accessible. This is because the legacy USB driver may be inactive when Windows enters the GUI mode. There is a small window of time when it may not be possible for the system to accept user input. Since the Chipset Software Installation Utility may cause prompts during the Windows setup stage, it should be ensured that the system BIOS support for legacy USB keyboard and mouse is enabled. 3 When the Chipset Software Installation Utility is run on a system with Windows 95 Original Release, the Device Manager may report a memory resource conflict. This conflict involves the resources allocated to PCI cards that are located behind a PCI bridge. The operating system incorrectly reports a memory conflict even though the memory resources in question are fully contained within the PCI bridge aperture. This appears to be a known issue with the Windows 95 operating system. The Chipset Software Installation Utility operation has no effect on this issue. 4 Older revisions of the Intel(R) LANDesk Software Package may cause a Device Manager warning when installed on a system after the Chipset Software Installation Utility has been executed on the system. 5 When running this software on Intel PIIX4-based chipset platforms, an extra reboot message might appear after the operating system has completed setup. 6 The Intel(r) Chipset Software Utility does not successfuly install under the Microsoft* Windows* 2000 Finnish or Microsoft* Windows* 2000 Russian operating systems. 7 The check for signature Block mode settings is not performed for the Windows* ME operating system environment. 8 The ICH2CORE.INF and ICH2CORM.INF files are not signed for the Microsoft Windows 98 Gold version of the operating system. Microsoft is no longer signing specifically for the Windows 98 Gold operating system. The following devices will NOT be updated if BLOCK mode signing is enabled under Windows 98 Gold: 2440, 244E, 244C, When Installing the INF files prior to OS Installation on an ICH2-M based system using Windows 95 (all versions) Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition, the user must ensure that the INFPreload.txt file has been edited to include a reference to the ICH2CORM.INF file. If these edits are not performed, then the ICH2-M bridge information will not be correctly installed. Below are the steps required to properly edit the INFPreload.txt file and ensure that the ICH2-M bridge information is correctly installed: Step 1) Edit the [PreCopyFiles] Section to refer to ICH2CORM.INF and comment out ICH2CORE.INF Step 2) Edit the [InfCopyFiles] Section to refer to ICH2CORM.INF and comment out ICH2CORE.INF Step 3) Edit the [SourceDiskFiles] Section to refer to ICH2CORM.INF and comment out ICH2CORE.INF
