1 By: Loc Huynh Date: 13 Oct 2009 Add new AD to an existing AD Forest Please see the following for the instruction of adding a new AD to an existing AD Forest. Note: Need to run adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep from the latest I386 folder. Say, the current AD is running Win2003 Standard. The new AD is running on Win 2003 R2. we need to run adprep from Win2003R2\I386 CD. 1. Open the Manage Server Console, Select Add more roles, 2. Click Next 3. Select Domain Controller, then click Next

2 4. Click Next 5. Click Next 6. Click Next 7. Select add to new domain, then click Next We should join the PC to a domain/forest that we want to make this to be an Active Directory on that domain/forest.

3 8. Enter the privileges account details to join the AD, click Next. 9. Select the domain to join, click on browse if unsure. Click Next 10. Select the location for the AD database and log files, click Next Recommend on seperate drive with Operating System drive 11. Select the place for AD sysvol files, click Next.

4 12. Enter the restore Administrator password, click Next. 13. Check the information and click next And Waiting wating 14. Click OK to reboot. 15. After a reboot.

5 Remove AD 2003 within an existing forest. Please see the following for the instruction of adding a new AD to an existing AD Forest. 1. Open the Manage Server Console, Select Add more roles 2. Click Next 3. Select Domain Controller, then next

6 4. Click on Remove from domain controller role, Select Next 5. Select Next 6. Click Next DONOT tick on this server is the last domain controller in the domain. Unless this is a the DC. Unless this is a last Domain. 7. Enter the new password for Administrator on the PC, click next then Next to confirm the removal

8 FSMO transferring Please the following FSMO transferring to a new AD Domain Controller server. There are at least five FSMO * Schema Master: The schema master domain controller controls all updates and modifications to the schema, there is only one Schema Master in the whole forest * Domain naming master: The domain naming master domain controller controls the addition or removal of domains in the forest. There can be only one domain naming master in the whole forest * Infrastructure Master: The infrastructure is responsible for updating references from objects in its domain to objects in other domains. At any one time, there can be only one domain controller acting as the infrastructure master in each domain * Relative ID (RID) Master: The RID master is responsible for processing RID pool requests from all domain controllers in a particular domain. At any one time, there can be only one domain controller acting as the RID master in the domain * PDC Emulator: The PDC emulator is a domain controller that advertises itself as the primary domain controller (PDC) to workstations, member servers, and domain controllers that are running earlier versions of Windows. At any one time, there can be only one domain controller acting as the PDC emulator master in each domain in the forest. 1. Transfer Schema Master Role a. Register schmmgmt.dll. i. Click Start Run ii. Type regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll in the Open box, and then click OK iii. Click OK b. Start run, type mmc then add Active Directory Schema c. Change the Domain Controller as show, click on specify and enter the appropriate Domain Controller d. Change Operations Master as show.

9 2. Domain naming master a. Open Active Directory Domains and Trusts from the DC that you want to switch to b. Right click on Active Directory Domains and Trusts then select Operations Master c. Click On Change 3. Infrastructure Master a. Open AD users and computers as show b. Select Infrastructure then click on Change. Click Yes to confirm and OK.

10 4. Relative ID (RID) Master a. Open AD users and computers as show b. Select RID as shown in step 3- then click on Change. Click Yes to confirm and OK. 5. PDC Emulator a. Open AD users and computers as show b. Select PDC as shown in step 3- then click on Change. Click Yes to confirm and OK.
