1 Migrating from Window Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 on Different Hardware Server Pre-requisites These are the prerequisites for migrating from 2003 domain controller to 2008 domain controller on different hardware server. 1) Raise the window server 2003 domain functional level either to Windows 2000 Native or windows sever ) Run the following commands on 2003 Domain controller: Adprep /forestprep Adprep /domainprep Adprep /domainprep/gpprep Adprep /rodcprep 3) A server installed with windows server 2008 which will be made ADC of windows server 2003 domain after following the above two steps. 1. Raising Domain Functional Level Open Active Directory Users and Computers 1

2 Select Window 2000 native, Click on Raise Button. You will get the following warning click on ok You will get the message that functional level has been raised successfully. 2

Running the Commands After Raising the Domain functional level, run the following commands: Before running the commands make sure that you have inserted the windows server 2008 DVD in windows server 2003 domain controller. In my case DVD drive is D: drive. You need to switch to adprep directory under sources directory in DVD before executing the commands. Run the adprep /forestprep Read the highlighted warning in above pic and press C and then press Enter if you meet the requirement and then wait for command to complete. 3

4 It is a lengthy command and it will take time. Run the adprep /domainprep Run the adprep /domainprep /gpprep 4

5 Run the adprep /rodcprep Now we will make the Windows Server 2008 machine as an additional domain controller of windows server 2003 domain for migrating the roles from windows server 2003 to 2008 server. 5

6 Promoting Windows Server 2008 as Additional Domain Controller of Windows Server 2003 Domain Click on Start click Run Type dcpromo 6

7 Click Next Click Next 7

8 Select existing forest and additional domain controller as shown above. Type the name of Domain and click on set button to provide user and password to connect to domain controller. 8

9 Enter domain administrator credentials and click on ok button. Click on Next 9

10 If the username and password are correct then it will connect the domain as shown below: Click Next. It will examine the Active directory forest as shown below: 10

11 Now it will ask you to select a site, let it default if you not made a custom one: Select DNS and Global Catalog tick as shown below: Click on Next 11

12 Select the option according to your need as shown below: 12

13 If you select to install the DNS sever, it will give you the below shown message, click yes to accept the creation of delegation to the DNS server manually. Click Next 13

14 Enter Directory Service Restore mode password as shown below: Click Next Review the settings if required in above screen and click Next. 14

15 The process will start for creating additional domain controller, let it continue.. Click on Finish Button. 15

16 It will prompt you to reboot your system. Reboot it.. to changes effect. Press CTRL+ALT+DELTE Enter Username and password to logon. 16

17 Open Active Directory Users and Computers from administrative tools and verify that this machine is showing domain controller OU as shown below: Setting up Additional Domain Controller with Windows Server 2008 is complete Now we will transfer the roles from Windows server 2003 Domain Controller to Windows Server 2008 Domain controller. 17

18 Roles Transfer There are five FSMO roles which will be transferred: 1. Schema Master 2. Domain Naming Master 3. Infrastructure Master 4. RID Master 5. PDC Emulator See below to learn which snap-in on the server will be used for transferring different type of roles: 1. Active Directory Schema snap-in Will be used to transfer the Schema Master role 2. Active Directory Domains and Trusts snap-in Will be used to transfer the Domain Naming Master role 3. Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in Will be used to transfer the RID Master, PDC Emulator, and Infrastructure Master roles Transferring Schema Master Role To transfer the schema master role you need to register the Schema master dll file. The schema master dll file name is schmmgmt.dll. For this click start Run and run the following command: Click on Ok 18

19 You will get the above message. Click on Ok Now go to RUN and open mmc. Click Ok Click on File Click on Add/Remove Snap-in as shown below: 19

20 Select Active Directory Schema Click Add Click Ok as shown below: Right click on Active Directory Schema and click on change domain controller: 20

21 Select the server on which you want to transfer the Schema master role and click on ok. 21

22 While click on ok you will get the following message. The meaning of this message is that this server has not been configure and schema master role holder. So, lets go and configure it to be schema master role holder: Click on ok on the above message. Right click on Active on Active Directory Schema and click on Operations Master: 22

23 Click on Change Button. As highlighted it will change Schema master role holder from Server2003 (Current role holder) to server2008. Click on Yes button as shown in below message dialog box: Role successfully transferred to server2008 domain controller. 23

24 Click on Ok and then click on Close. Transferring Domain Naming Master Role Using Active Directory Domain and Trusts we will transfer the domain naming master role: 24

25 Right click Active Directory Domain and Trusts Change Active Directory Domain Controller Select the domain controller that you want to be the domain naming master role holder: Click OK. 25

26 Right click Active Directory Domain and Trusts and click Operations Master: Click on Change button. This will transfer the Domain naming master role from server2003 domain controller to server2008 domain controller. 26

27 Click on Yes button to confirm the role transfer. Role transferred successfully. Click on ok and click on close. 27

28 Transferring RID Master, PDC Emulator and Infrastructure Role We will be transferring all these three roles using single snap-in Active Directory Users and Computer. Right click Active Directory Users and Computers All Tasks Operations Master 28

29 Click on the Change button. It will transfer the RID master from server2003 domain controller to server2008 domain controller. 29

30 Click on Yes button to confirm the role transfer. Click OK. Click on PDC Tab and click on Change button. It will transfer the PDC Emulator role from server 2003 domain controller to server2008 domain controller. 30

31 Click on Yes to confirm the role transfer. Click Ok. Click on Infrastructure Tab and click on Change button. It will transfer the Infrastructure master role from server2003 domain controller to server2008 domain controller. 31

32 When you click on change button, it will give you the following message: This message warns you about not to put Infrastructure master role on a domain controller which is acting as Global catalog server, but this message is useful if you are running multi domain forest. I f you have single domain then no need to worry about it. Just simply click on Yes and go ahead. Role transferred successfully. Click Ok. And then click close. The above figure shows that Infrastructure master role has been successfully transferred. 32
