5 1 Overview This guide provides the step-by-step approach to build a balanced configuration for Microsoft SQL Server data warehouse workloads on Dell enterprise products. The reference architectures are described in the 17 TB and 26 TB Data Warehouse Fast Track for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 using PowerEdge R730 and Dell Storage PS6210S documents. In this deployment guide, the requirements will be described to prepare the hardware platforms and the software to achieve a balanced, optimized 17TB or a 26TB configuration for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 data warehouse. Dell best practices and Microsoft DWFT principles are implemented as appropriate to the Dell PowerEdge R730 servers, Dell Networking switches and PS Series storage. This deployment document reference architecture is graphically represented in Figure 1. 8 3 Deployment workflow This section outlines the sequence of deploying the 17 TB or 26 TB solution for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 using the Dell PowerEdge R730 server, Dell Switches s4810 and Dell PS series PS6210S storage. Differences in the configuration will be identified throughout the document depending on the solution. Perform the following tasks to deploy the DWFT for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 on the Dell PowerEdge R730, Dell Networking S4810 and Dell PS Series PS6210S. 1. Install and Cable the R730, S4810 Switches and PS6210S. 2. Install and Configure the Dell Networking S4810 switches. 3. Install and Configure the R730 server. 4. Initialize and Configure the Dell PS Series PS6210S. 5. Configure Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2. 6. Install and Configure Microsoft SQL Server This guide assumes some understanding of general administration responsibilities for Windows Servers, SQL Server and PS Series storage. 8 17TB and 26TB Data Warehouse Fast Track for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 using PowerEdge R730 Server and Dell

9 4 Cabling Requirements Figure 2 shows the iscsi connectivity. The NICs should be installed in the server to provide four 10GbE connections. Use the number callouts as a guide to perform the following connections. Note: Callout numbers are for reference only and are not actual port numbers Figure 2 Cable layout guide Each NIC will have one iscsi port connected to one switch. Alternate the connectivity as shown in Figure 2 to maximize efficiency and availability. - Connect 1 to 2, 3 to 4, 5 to 6, 7 to 8 from the NIC ports to the Switch 9 17TB and 26TB Data Warehouse Fast Track for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 using PowerEdge R730 Server and Dell

10 The Dell Networking Switch should be interconnected - Connect 9 to 10, 11 to 12 between the switches (ports 52 and 48) The Dell PS6210 should be redundantly connected to the switch from each controller. - Connect 13 to 14, 15 to 16 for the top switch - Connect 17 to 18, 19 to 20 for the bottom switch Optionally connect management ports to a management network. Note: If a Management port is cabled be sure the network environment can support a dedicated management network, with a subnet that is separate from the subnets for iscsi traffic TB and 26TB Data Warehouse Fast Track for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 using PowerEdge R730 Server and Dell

11 5 Configure Dell Networking S4810 switches After racked, stacked, cabled and powered on, connect a serial cable to the console port of each switch. To access the console, connect one end of the serial cable to the console port on the S4810 top or bottom switch, and the other end to the terminal server (Laptop). 2. Open the switch console using the HyperTerminal (a terminal emulator application such as Putty). 3. Open your terminal emulator and configure it to use the serial port (usually COM1, but may vary). a. Configure serial communications for 9600, N, 8, 1 and no flow control. b. Be sure the LAG cables are connected as described in the Cabling requirements 5.2 Delete startup configuration Note: The following commands delete all the configuration settings. 1. FTOS>enable 2.
