Chapter 3 MUX100 Operation Once deployed in the network, the MUX100 operates autonomously, providing real-time network communication with no operator intervention. For maintenance or configuration, however, the MUX100 requires operator control via a control console and the controls and indicators on the circuit card modules. This chapter provides procedures for connecting the control console and configuring the MUX100, as well as command set definitions and system initialization methods. 3.1 Controls and Indicators Most of the front panel modules on the MUX100 contain LED indicators that facilitate troubleshooting and monitoring of the system operation. For descriptions of controls and indicators, refer to the MUX100 Series Channel Bank Multiplexer Hardware Reference Guide. 3.2 Powering On, Powering Off, and Initializing the MUX100 The MUX100 is powered on and off by means of the circuit breakers on the PSI module or DCI module (see Figure 2-9 and Figure 2-10). These circuit
3-2 Chapter 3: MUX100 Operation breakers control and protect against overcurrent when the power is applied to the corresponding PSU modules. Because the PSU modules are redundant, make sure to set both circuit breakers to O (off) before powering down the MUX100. To power on the MUX100, set at least one circuit breaker to I (on). When you power up the MUX100, the system resets and initializes the current configuration parameters. You can, therefore, reset the system simply by powering it down, then powering it back on again. 3.3 Control Console You use a control console (not included with the MUX100) to download and install software, and for configuring and monitoring the system. The control console can be a personal computer (PC) or a non-intelligent ASCII terminal. You can connect the control console directly (via RS-232-C serial cable) or remotely (via modem, communications server, or other compatible communications device) to the supervisory port on the CCI module. The MUX100 supervisory port is a DCE device; therefore, you must configure the control console as a DTE device. Instructions for remote connection via communications servers are out of the scope of this document. To establish communication with the MUX100, the control console must be running a terminal emulation program, such as TSCFlash (see Section 4.3.1, Installing the TSCFlash Program), HyperTerminal (included with Microsoft Windows 95), or other compatible serial-port communications program. This connection may be either temporary (e.g., only while performing maintenance or configuration) or permanent (e.g., for network management) Establishing Communication through a Direct Connection The following procedure provides generic guidelines for establishing a direct connection between the control console and the MUX100. There are no prerequisites. How to Establish a Direct Connection between the Control Console and the MUX100 1 Connect the RS-232-C serial cable from the communications port on the control console to the supervisory port on the CCI module. 2 On the control console, do the following:
Control Console 3-3 a Refer to control console documentation and ensure that the communications (COM) port connected to the MUX100 is configured as follows: Bits per second = 9600 Data bits = 8 Parity = none Stop bits = 1 Hardware flow control = none b c Start and run the communications program in terminal emulation mode. At the command prompt in the terminal emulation window, press Enter. The command prompt is displayed, indicating that communication has been established with the primary CPU module in the MUX Establishing Communication through a Remote Connection The procedure How to Configure a Modem for Remote Connection to the MUX100 provides generic guidelines for configuring a modem for remote connection to the MUX100. Two modems have been tested to work with the MUX100 the Hayes Acura 56K Practical Peripherals FXMT and the U.S. Robotics Sportster. This procedure applies to either modem. Since modem commands vary by manufacturer, some modem commands indicated in this procedure may not apply. In these situations, obtain specific instructions from the modem vendor. How to Configure a Modem for Remote Connection to the MUX100 1 Using the control console, establish communication between the modem and the control console as follows: a Refer to the control console documentation and ensure that the communication port connected to the modem is configured as follows:
3-4 Chapter 3: MUX100 Operation Bits per second = 9600 Data bits = 8 Parity = none Stop bits = 1 Hardware flow control = none b Run the communication program. 2 In the terminal emulation window, type AT &F0 and press Enter. The modem initializes to the default parameters. 3 If you are configuring the modem for use with the TSCFlash program, do the following. Otherwise, proceed to Step 4. a b Type AT &F0 &C1 &D2 &K0 and press Enter. Type AT L2 M1 S7=90 S11=55 #CID=0 S0=0 and press Enter. 4 If you are not configuring the modem for use with the TSCFlash program, do one of the following. a b If you are configuring a Hayes Aura 56K Practical Peripherals modem, type AT E0 Q1 &C1 &D0 &K0 &Y1 S0=1 and press Enter. If you are configuring a US Robotics Sportster modem, type AT E0 Q1 &C1 &B0 &D0 &H0 Y1 S0=1 and press Enter. 5 Type AT &W1 and press Enter. The modem is configured to the parameters specified, and the active profile is saved in the modem. 6 Connect the telephone line to the line receptacle on the modem. 7 Disconnect the cable between the modem and the control console. 8 Disconnect the null modem cable between the modem and the supervisory port on the rear of the MUX100. The control console communication is established with the MUX100 via a remote connection.
Configuration Configuration The factory default parameters defined in the MUX100 software are suitable for typical network operation. However, you can modify these parameters as necessary for specific network requirements by executing MUX100 commands at a control console. You can configure the MUX100 whether or not it is connected to the network, although some configuration changes may affect service and disrupt normal communication. The procedures for configuring MUX100 trunks and channels are specific to your application and software release. See the application notes shipped with this manual for complete configuration instructions. For details on command syntax, refer to Section 3.5, The Command Set. If problems occur during configuration, refer to Chapter 5, Troubleshooting. You must repeat the configuration procedures for each module in a redundant pair because the commands are processed only by the in-service module. System configuration parameters are stored independently in the modules and are not replicated automatically. When you make a change to the parameters in the in-service module, you must manually replicate the changes in the offline (standby) CPU module. Before beginning any configuration procedures, do the following: Make sure the primary complement of modules is correctly installed in the MUX100 chassis. See Figure 4-1 for card slot locations. Establish communication between the control console and the MUX100. Refer to Section 3.3, Control Console for instructions. 3.5 The Command Set The MUX100 is a command-driven system operated through a commandline interface at a control console. Using the MUX100 command set, you can configure the MUX100 as desired for network operation and monitor its operation. You can use these commands while the MUX100 is connected to the network or not connected, although some commands will affect service and disrupt normal communication.
3-6 Chapter 3: MUX100 Operation When the chassis holds redundant CPU modules, different command prompts indicate whether the primary or secondary CPU module is in service. When the primary CPU module is on line, the command prompt looks similar to the following: When the secondary CPU module is on line, the command prompt looks similar to the following: secondary-online> Table 3-1 lists the MUX100 commands. Pressing the Enter key without typing any text will not modify the current parameter. (Depending on the software you are using, you may get an error message.)
The Command Set 3-7 Error responses include a number that corresponds to the type of error that occurred. Commands that address individual trunks or channels have dialog that varies with system configuration or application The clearslot Command The clearslot command clears the occupancy status of a specified card slot that is in a fault condition in the MUX100. All alarm reporting for that module ceases until the module is re-established. You can re-establish a module s presence by using the reset command or by removing and reinstalling the module. You typically use the clearslot command when a module is malfunctioning or has been physically removed from the MUX100. The clearslot command has no effect on a module that is functioning properly. In addition, you can use the clearslot command to re-initialize the slot configuration status to the factory default value, defining the correct module type that should be installed in the specified slot. The syntax for this command is: clearslot number <Enter> where number is the number of the slot to be cleared. In the following example, the clearslot command is used to clear slot 14. clearslot 14 You can see the clearslot command s effect on the system status by using the show status command.
