Activating an EVDO Wireless Card in a Cellular Carrier Network Including the Sprint Data Link Network Use one of the procedures in this document to activate an EVDO card in a BANDIT chassis or a C2C chassis. The procedures provide AT commands for account activation. Note: This document is for EVDO cards. For CDMA/1xRTT cards and GSM/GPRS/EDGE/ UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA cards, see Activating a Wireless Card in a Cellular Carrier Network. In most cases, the cards activate automatically. There is no need to use these manual activation procedures unless the wireless card does not activate automatically upon installation. 6.1 Overview of EVDO Card Activation and Configuration The following steps provide an overview for activating and configuring an EVDO wireless card in the BANDIT device: 1 Activate the wireless card in the cellular carrier network. The sections in this document discuss details of activating your EVDO card for its wireless network. See Detailed Procedures for EVDO Card Activation. 2 Configure the card in the BANDIT menus. This is discussed in the document Wireless Card Configuration. 3 After the card has been activated and configured (that is, when the card is ready for operation or is in operation), use the BANDIT's statistical reports to verify the card's configuration. 2 Page 2 Wireless Set-Up Module, Document AT Commands Note the following: AT commands do not require spaces and generally do not use spaces. In this document, spaces might be used for clarity in AT commands. AT commands are not case-sensitive. You may use uppercase or lowercase letters in AT commands. In this document, uppercase letters are used for those commands. Although AT commands themselves are not case-sensitive, character-string values are case-sensitive and must match the letter cases given by Sprint. (For an example of that, see the name in the example following step 10a of Using AT Commands to Activate a Data Link Account, on page 5.) 6.3 Detailed Procedures for EVDO Card Activation If the EVDO wireless card will use Sprint s Data Link SM network, see Activating an Account in the Sprint Data Link Network, on page 2. Otherwise, see one of the following discussions: Activating a Sierra Wireless EVDO Card in the Verizon Wireless Network, on page 7 Activating a Sierra Wireless EVDO Card in the Sprint Network, on page 10 Activating a Novatel Wireless EVDO Card in the Verizon Wireless Network, on page 14 Activating a Novatel Wireless EVDO Card in the Sprint Network, on page Activating an Account in the Sprint Data Link Network This section discusses activation of an account in Sprint s Data Link SM network for an EVDO card in a BANDIT II or a BANDIT III. Data Link is Sprint s private secure network. Note: This section contains the only procedures needed for activating an EVDO card in Sprint s Data Link network.! Caution: If you are activating an EVDO card in a Sprint network that is not a Data Link network, do not perform the procedures in this section. Instead, see one of the following: Activating a Sierra Wireless EVDO Card in the Sprint Network, on page 10 Activating a Novatel Wireless EVDO Card in the Sprint Network, on page Preparing Information for a Sprint Data Link Account You will need to get the activation parameters. Contact your network administrator for the Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) protocol main shared secret (AAA SS). Contact your Sprint representative for the following information: Network Access Identifier (NAI) Primary home address (PHA) Secondary home address (SHA) Home Agent (HA) protocol main shared secret (HA SS)

Then press Enter to get the BANDIT device s attention. The system may ask for a login name or password. 2 Enter your assigned login name and/or password, if they are requested. (For details, see Starting the ELIOS Software.) After a successful login, the Main Menu is displayed. 4 Page 4 Wireless Set-Up Module, Document 6 4 On the System Tools menu, do one of the following: a If you are activating an EVDO card in the BANDIT II, select Expansion EVDO Monitor. b If you are activating an EVDO card in the BANDIT III, do one of the following: i If the EVDO card is in the BANDIT III s external expansion slot, select Expansion EVDO Monitor. ii If the EVDO card is in the BANDIT III s internal wireless slot, select Wireless EVDO Monitor. In all cases, the EVDO Monitor menu is displayed. Note: The EVDO Monitor menu is identical for either selection Expansion EVDO Monitor or Wireless EVDO Monitor. EVDO MONITOR ) Reset USB 2) AT COMMAND 3) EVDO DIagnostics 4) Telnet into Wireless Card 5) Activation 5 Select AT Command. The following prompt is displayed. Do you want to reset the connection?(y/n)[n]: 6 Answer y (yes). The following message is displayed, followed by instructions for returning to the BANDIT Main Menu (after using the AT commands). Please wait... Press Ctrl-Z to exit the session Note: Do not press Ctrl Z until after you have finished the AT commands. 7 Type at and press Enter. The following message is displayed.

Now the card accepts AT command lines. 9 Type AT E1 V1 and press the Enter key. (This turns Echo on, so that you can see the things you type on the screen.) The module responds with. 10 Now you are ready to activate the Data Link account. Do all of the following: Note: Sprint provides the Network Address Identifier (NAI), primary home address (PHA), secondary home address (SHA), and HA protocol shared secret (HA SS) on its PCS Data Link Technical Requirements Form. The customer provides the AAA protocol shared secret (AAA SS) on that same form. In AT commands, spaces do not matter; you may include or exclude spaces when you type the commands. However, you must type the data information itself exactly as it is shown on Sprint s form (including capital letters, if any). a Type the following command (where Network Address Identifier represents the value provided on the Sprint form) and press Enter. AT $QCMIP NAI = Network Address Identifier,1 For example, if your wireless card s NAI is customer@spm1196.dl.sprintpcs.com, then type the following and press Enter. AT $QCMIP NAI = customer@spm1196.dl.sprintpcs.com,1 The module responds with. b Type the following command (where Primary Home Address represents the value provided on the Sprint form) and press Enter. AT $QCMIP PHA = Primary Home Address,1 For example, if your wireless card s primary home address is , type the following and press Enter. AT $QCMIP PHA = ,1 The module responds with. c Type the following command (where Secondary Home Address represents the value provided on the Sprint form) and press Enter. AT $QCMIP SHA = Secondary Home Address,1 For example, if your wireless card s secondary home address is x.x, type the following and press Enter. AT $QCMIP SHA = x.x,1 The module responds with.

AT $QCMIP MASS = AAA shared secret,1 For example, if your wireless card s AAA protocol shared secret is AbCd0&3, type the following and press Enter. AT $QCMIP MASS = AbCd0&3,1 Note: Your organization (the customer) provides the AAA shared secret. Check with your network administrator for this value. Be sure to type it exactly as it is spelled, including capital letters (if any). The module responds with. e Type the following command (where HA shared secret represents the value provided on the Sprint form) and press Enter. AT $QCMIP MHSS = HA shared secret,1 For example, if your wireless card s HA protocol shared secret is xyz456abc, type the following and press Enter. AT $QCMIP MHSS = xyz456abc,1 Note: Sprint provides the HA shared secret. Be sure to type it exactly as it is spelled, including capital letters (if any). The module responds with. f Type the following command and press Enter. AT $QCMIP EP = 1 That command enables the profile that you are entering. g Type the following command and press Enter. AT $QCMIP GETP The module displays the data that you just entered. Note: The values of the shared secrets are not displayed. Indicators show merely that the shared secrets have been Set. h Verify that the information is correct. Then do one of the following: i If all of the information is correct, continue to step 11. ii If an item is incorrect, re-enter the AT command for that item and type the corrected information. For example, if the primary home address (PHA), which you entered in substep b, is supposed to be , but it displays as , then perform substep b again. The module again displays the data that you entered. Repeat substep h. 11 To exit the command line interface, hold the Ctrl key down and press Z once. 12 Then press the Enter key until you return to the BANDIT s Main Menu.

The Data Link account is saved as part of the configuration. 14 On the Main Menu, select Reset and answer the questions with y (yes). The BANDIT device resets. When it restarts, it uses the saved configuration (which includes the Data Link account). See Reviewing a Wireless Port s Configuration to verify that PPP, including authentication, is set up for the card Activating a Sierra Wireless EVDO Card in the Verizon Wireless Network Note: Before you activate the module in the Verizon Wireless network, make sure the module has already been properly provisioned for the Verizon Wireless network. (This was done before the module was shipped to you.) In addition, you may need to set up an account with Verizon Wireless, and then get your wireless card s activation parameters. Contact your business account s Verizon Wireless representative. How to Use AT Commands to Activate a Sierra Wireless EVDO Card in the Verizon Wireless Network 1 Use a terminal-emulation program, such as HyperTerminal, Procomm, or Telnet, to connect to the BANDIT menu interface. Then press Enter to get the BANDIT device s attention. The Main Menu is displayed. Note: Make sure Echo is on, so that you can see what you type on the screen. (To turn Echo on, type AT E1V1 and press Enter.) 8 Do the following: a To unlock the wireless card, type the following command and press Enter: AT~NAMLCK= Note: Be sure to type zero (0), not the letter O. The module responds with. 9 Do the following: a Type the following command and press Enter: AT+CDV*22899 This starts a session of over-the-air service provisioning (OTASP). The following messages are displayed while the routine is setting up the card in the network: NO CARRIER 10 When you see the message NO CARRIER, type the following command: AT~NAMVAL?0

The MDN and MSID information will be displayed, meaning the activation was good. The system identification number (SID) and the network identification number (NID) might also be displayed. Note: After you configure the BANDIT device s use of the wireless card, the BANDIT s cellular statistics should display the BANDIT s acquired IP address for the card. If the IP address does not appear in the statistics, turn the BANDIT s power off (by unplugging it from the power source); after a few seconds, plug the BANDIT back in. Then look at the statistics again. If the IP address still does not show up, check the configuration. 11 To exit the command line interface, hold the Ctrl key down and press E once. 12 Then press CtrL Z to return to the BANDIT s Main Menu. 13 See Reviewing a Wireless Port s Configuration Activating a Sierra Wireless EVDO Card in the Sprint Network This section discusses activation of a Sierra MC572X module (card) in the BANDIT II or the BANDIT III.! Caution: If you are activating a card in Sprint s Data Link Network, do not use the procedure in this section. Instead, see Activating an Account in the Sprint Data Link Network. Note: Before you activate the module in the network, make sure the module has already been properly provisioned for the Sprint network. (This was done before the BANDIT was shipped to you.) You will also need to get the activation parameters. From Sprint, obtain a mobile directory number (MDN), a mobile station ID (MSID), and a service provisioning code (SPL, sometimes called master subsidy lock, MSL, or service programming code, SPC). In Sprint s network, the MSID and the mobile identification number (MIN) are the same thing. This number is usually the same as your mobile device s telephone number. Contact your Sprint representative for these numbers. Note: In the following commands, when you see <SPC>, <MDN>, <MIN>, or <MSID>, type your corresponding number as provided by your Sprint representative. How to Use AT Commands to Activate a Sierra Wireless EVDO Card in the Sprint Network 1 Use a terminal-emulation program, such as HyperTerminal, Procomm, or Telnet, to connect to the BANDIT menu interface. The module responds with. b Type the following command and press Enter: AT!IOATASTART Note: Make sure the exclamation point (!) is followed by the letters I and O. This starts a session of over-the-air service provisioning (OTASP). The following messages are displayed while the routine is setting up the card in the network: NO CARRIER 10 When you see the message NO CARRIER, type the following command: AT~NAMVAL?0 Note: Make sure the command ends with a question mark (?) and a zero (0), not the letter O. (This was done before the module was shipped to you.) In addition, you may need to set up an account with Verizon Wireless, and then get your wireless card s activation parameters. You will receive a mobile directory number (MDN, which is the telephone number), a mobile station ID (MSID) account number, and a service provisioning code (SPL, sometimes called master subsidy lock, MSL, or service programming code, SPC). Usually, the MSID and the mobile identification number (MIN) are the same thing. This number is usually the same as your MDN. Contact your Verizon Wireless representative for your device s numbers. In the following commands, when you see <SPC>, <MDN>, <MIN>, or <MSID>, type your corresponding number as provided by your carrier representative. How to Use AT Commands to Activate a Novatel Wireless EVDO Card in the Verizon Wireless Network 1 Use a terminal-emulation program, such as HyperTerminal, Procomm, or Telnet, to connect to the BANDIT menu interface. The following messages is displayed after the routine has set up the card in the network: 9 9 When you see the message, type the following command: AT$QCMIPNAI=<MDN>@vzw3g.com 10 Type the following command: AT$QCMIPGETP The system checks the network access identifier (NAI) parameters. It should display the value you typed in step 9. (That is, it should display <MDN>@vzw3g.com, where <MDN> is the device s telephone number.) Note: After you configure the BANDIT device s use of the wireless card, the BANDIT s cellular statistics should display the BANDIT s acquired IP address for the card. If the IP address does not appear in the statistics, turn the BANDIT s power off (by unplugging it from the power source); after a few seconds, plug the BANDIT back in. Then look at the statistics again. If the IP address still does not show up, check the configuration.

This starts a session of over-the-air activation (OTAA). The following messages are displayed while the routine is setting up the card in the network: 10 Now type the following command: AT+IOTA=2 Note: Make sure the command uses the letter O, not the numeral zero (0). This downloads a preferred roaming list (PRL). When it has completed, the following message is displayed. 11 Type the following command: AT+IOTA=? Note: Make sure the command uses the letter O, not the numeral zero (0), and make sure the command ends with an equal sign (=) and a question mark (?). This checks the status of OTAA. When it has completed, the following message is displayed. +IOAA: (1:[0-2]) Note: The 1 means that the status is good. Then the following message is displayed. 12 Type the following command: AT+IOTA?

Note that there is no equal sign (=) in this command. This checks the OTAA state (Enabled or Disabled). When it has completed, the following messages are displayed. IOTA Enabled Note: The Enabled state indicates that over-the-air activation was successful. Then the following message is displayed. Note: After you configure the BANDIT device s use of the wireless card, the BANDIT s cellular statistics should display the BANDIT s acquired IP address for the card. If the IP address does not appear in the statistics, turn the BANDIT s power off (by unplugging it from the power source); after a few seconds, plug the BANDIT back in. Then look at the statistics again.
