1 Introduction to Vuforia Carmine Elvezio Steve Feiner COMS W4172 March 20, 2018 Vuforia SDK supporting the creation of AR/VR applications Supported on ios and Android Also works in Unity Play Mode Created by Qualcomm and purchased by PTC in 2015 Vuforia recognition and tracking supports: Single or multi image tracking General 3D object tracking Cuboid and cylinder tracking Terrain tracking Extended tracking (tracking beyond targets) Environment Tracking 2
2 Supported Platforms Android 4.4+ Deployment from OSX and Windows ios 9+ Deployment from OSX only Development on Windows 7+ and OSX Unity Getting Started Register as a developer at developer.vuforia.com Get a Vuforia license key At the developer portal, go to Develop License Manager Add a license key Get Vuforia 7 Provided with Unity Ensure that you select Vuforia during Unity installation. 4
3 Import Vuforia In Unity, import the Vuforia Unity Package Add Vuforia to your project, located in Edit Project Settings Player XR Settings Check Vuforia Augmented Reality When you first check Vuforia Augmented Reality in XR settings, you will get a new resources folder in your Assets folder containing the VuforiaConfiguration asset. Unity may prompt you to import Vuforia when adding your first Vuforia GameObject Accept prompt 5 Vuforia Configuration Adding Vuforia License (Vuforia must be enabled) Select Vuforia Configuration Window Vuforia Configuration Assets Resources Vuforia Configuration ARCamera Open Vuforia Configuration Add the license key to your AR Camera Press Add License to go to Vuforia license manager page on the developer site Create a license and copy/paste the key in the App License Key field in Unity (see image) 6
4 ARCamera Add the ARCamera to your scene (Scene Create) OR (Menu GameObject) Vuforia AR Camera ARCamera WorldCenterMode: FIRST_TARGET: The first target detected will represent the world center all items in the scene, including the camera, will be positioned relative to this target SPECIFIC_TARGET: The specified target is the world center CAMERA: The camera is the world center; all targets are positioned relative to it DEVICE_TRACKING: World center is defined by mobile device sensors 7 Target Manager Create a Device Database Upload target images Follow target creation guides to maximize target quality 8 or 24 bit PNG or JPEG only Maximum file size 2MB Determine how large you would like your targets to be (physically) before uploading your images Download and import the Vuforia database package Select and activate the database in your scene's ARCamera Device Databases support up to 1000 targets (per database) Maximum number of simultaneous tracked targets varies by device Generally, approximately 10 8
5 Image Targets Vuforia Configuration: ensure that you load and activate your Device Database. Insert ImageTarget GameObject from: (Scene Create) OR (Menu GameObject) Vuforia Image Change Database and ImageTarget fields in the ImageTargetBehavior component attached to the ImageTarget Gameobject 9 How to make good image targets 10
6 Virtual Buttons Vuforia supports virtual buttons added directly to targets, defined: In the target's XML file At runtime Connected to targets, allowing users to press predefined region of target to trigger a button event 3 levels of sensitivity Low/Medium/High Register event handlers in script to handle interactions with virtual buttons See Virtual Button Behaviour script 11 Virtual Buttons Add Virtual Buttons to scene by inserting the VirtualButton GameObject Select a Vuforia Target Press Add Virtual Button A new GameObject (called VirtualButton) will appear as a child of the selected Vuforia target GameObject Give the virtual button a name Avoid stacking buttons vertically, as user s hands may block a button accidentally or trigger an accidental button event 12
7 Cloud Tracking Useful if you need to recognize targets from a large list of source images Limited number of cloud recognitions supported under free license First, add a Cloud Target Manager in developer portal, then: Insert the CloudRecognition Prefab from: (Scene Create) OR (Menu GameObject) Vuforia CloudRecognition Insert your Cloud Database Access and Secret Keys Create a C# implementation of the ICloudRecoEventHandler Interface Add an image target Switch ImageTargetBehaviour s Type to Cloud Reco Point your ICloudRecoEventHandler implementation to the Image Target 13 Cylinder & Cuboid Tracking Vuforia can track 3D shapes; supported target types include: Cylindrical targets Cuboidal targets Scanned 3D shapes User specified 3D configurations Adding cylinder/cuboid targets: Select Add Target in Target Manager in developer portal Select Cylinder Provide Side length and Top/Bottom diameters Select Cuboid Provide Width/Height/Length Create the target and then select it in the Target Manager to add image targets per face using the target preparation tool 14
8 Object Tracking Model Targets Vuforia can track general 3D shapes Vuforia s Model Target Generator Generates Object Database targets from *.pvz, *.dae, *.dae, *.igs, *.obj, *.stp, *.stl, *wrl Must use Vuforia s Model Target Generator application to convert to Vuforia s model tracking format (see > Vuforia Model Target Generator Or Vuforia Object Scanner) Enable Device Database in ARCamera Insert ObjectTarget Prefab (Scene Create) OR (Menu GameObject) Vuforia ObjectTarget In ObjectTargetBehavior, attached to the ObjectTarget GameObject Select desired Device Database, and Object Target Specify bounding box size (automatically generated by Vuforia) Maximum of 2 ObjectTargets can be tracked simultaneously 15 Extended Tracking Allows Vuforia to keep tracking a target, even if it loses sight of it, by dynamically mapping the surrounding area Supports persistent maps and multiple simultaneous targets Vuforia may need to continually regenerate the area map if the environment is not static Do not enable on moving targets Avoid usage on older devices impact on performance may make application unusable 16
9 Conclusion and Suggestions Vuforia can be used to quickly create AR/VR applications using Unity Supports a wide range of tracking target types With multi face targets, each face counts towards max count Deployable to ios, Android and Unity s Play Mode Can be used with Google Cardboard Vuforia will impact your device's performance Test often Play Mode is not an accurate indicator of your application s performance when using Vuforia Experiment with different targets for your scene Maximize the quality of your UI by finding the right targets for your interactions 17 Questions? 18
