1 Syllabus Digital Art Overview This one-semester elective course is intended as a practical, hands-on guide to help you understand digital art. This course is structured into lessons and Activities as follows: The first lesson gives you an overview of digital art history. It summarizes the important events related to art from the nineteenth century to the present. In the next lesson, you will explore various careers in digital art. You will learn about the basic qualification you need to apply for different digital art courses. The third lesson discusses digital image concepts. You will learn how digital art is stored on computers and about various digital file formats and their compression techniques. In the next three lessons, you will learn to create basic shapes and universal symbols. You will create a poster by applying color and typographic effects. The next lesson deals with perspective, a technique applied to two-dimensional images so they appear three-dimensional images. You will create perspective images. The next two lessons show you how to crop, flip, rotate, blur, distort, or sharpen an image. You will apply rendering methods on an image. You will learn about the layout design principles of emphasis, readability, balance, rhythm, and unity, and you will apply these principles to create an advertisement. The next lesson discusses art criticism. You will learn how to critique an artwork using the four stages of art criticism. The next four lessons deal with conversion of traditional art to digital art, digital printing, digital photography, and multimedia. In the last lesson, you will learn how to create your own digital portfolio. You will submit the documents to your teacher, and you will grade your work in the Activities by comparing them with sample responses. Each lesson also has a multiple-choice mastery test. A multiple-choice end-of-semester test completes the course. The Activities (submitted to the teacher) and the Activities (self-checked) are major components of this course. They will guide your learning as you work through this course. In particular, the seven Activities will help you identify possible career paths and the key skills required for a career in digital art EDMENTUM, INC.
2 Goals By the end of this course, you will have done the following: explored various career options in digital art learned to create bitmap and vector images learned how to apply color, typography, and layout design principles on digital images learned basic image manipulation and rendering techniques learned how to create perspective images explored art criticism learned how to convert traditional art to digital art understood basic concepts of digital printing, digital photography, and multimedia learned to create a digital portfolio Prerequisite Skills The Principles of Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications course is a prerequisite for this course. Also, these basic skills will be helpful as you work through this course: visualizing creative thinking attention to detail General Skills To participate in this course, you should be able to do the following: Perform basic operations with word processing software, such as Microsoft Word; spreadsheet programs, such as Microsoft Excel; and presentation software, such as Microsoft PowerPoint. Perform online research using various search engines and library databases. Communicate through and participate in discussion boards. Take pictures using a digital camera. Scan drawings using a scanner. For a complete list of general skills that are required for participation in online courses, refer to the Prerequisites section of the Plato Student Orientation document, found at the beginning of this course.
