1 Purpose Equipment Required This document provides a Novar Controls approved procedure for connecting a Hawki Advanced to a personal computer (PC) configured as an interactive ( dumb ) terminal through its serial port. The following equipment is needed to carry out this procedure: A PC running Windows 95 or later operating system A serial cable with a DB-9 male connector on one end and a connector that is compatible with the PC s serial port on the other. Overview Connecting a dumb terminal to a Hawki Advanced Air-Handling Unit Controller allows users to view the controller s operating status and make limited configuration changes. Installing the terminal involves: Configuring the PC. Connecting the PC to the Hawki Advanced. Testing the connection. Configuring the PC The Windows Hyper Terminal utility is used to configure an available serial port to establish a terminal session with the Hawki Advanced. The following procedure should be used. 1 Click on Start on the Windows taskbar (usually at the bottom of the computer screen) and on the following options to open the Connection Description screen: Programs Accessories Communications (not required in older operating systems) Hyper Terminal NOTE! With newer operating systems, the HyperTerminal program automatically starts. If it does not, the user must select the HyperTrm.exe option. continued DOC. #TD /30/04 1

2 Complete the following tasks in the Connection Description screen (Figure 1): Type a name for the terminal in the NAME field (in Figure 1, the terminal is called Hawki Advanced HyperTerm ).

3 Complete the following tasks in the Connect To screen (Figure 2): Type the appropriate telephone-related information in the Country/Region, Area Code, and Phone Number fields if a modem has

2 2 Complete the following tasks in the Connection Description screen (Figure 1): Type a name for the terminal in the NAME field (in Figure 1, the terminal is called Hawki Advanced HyperTerm ). Select an icon to represent the terminal. Click on OK to open the Connect To screen. 3 Complete the following tasks in the Connect To screen (Figure 2): Type the appropriate telephone-related information in the Country/Region, Area Code, and Phone Number fields if a modem has been installed for the PC. NOTE! These fields will not be active if the PC has no modem. Select an available communications port in the CONNECT USING field. Click on OK to open a properties screen. continued Figure 1. 4 Select the following parameters in the properties screen (Figure 3) and click on OK to save the settings and open the HyperTerminal session screen: Bits per second: 9600 Data Bits: 8 Parity: None

3 4 Select the following parameters in the properties screen (Figure 3) and click on OK to save the settings and open the HyperTerminal session screen: Bits per second: 9600 Data Bits: 8 Parity: None Stop Bits: 1 Flow Control: None 5 Click on File and Save to save the new session and exit the HyperTerminal program. 4 Hawki Advanced HyperTerminal Installation Instructions Connecting the PC to the Hawki Advanced The following procedure should be used to connect the PC to the Hawki Advanced. If necessary, use a small screw driver to tighten the connections. 1 Insert the DB-9 male connector on the serial cable into the Hawki Advanced s communication port (Figure 4) and tighten it. 2 Insert the other end of the serial cable into the PC s COM port configured as the Hyper Terminal and tighten it. Testing the Connection The following procedure should be used to test the connection between the Hawki Advanced and the PC. 1 Launch the HyperTerminal program to open the HyperTerminal screen.

Hawki Advanced HyperTerminal Session Main Menu screen If the terminal displays the screen shown in Figure 7, the connection is confirmed and the terminal is ready for use.

5 Testing the Connection The following procedure should be used to test the connection between the Hawki Advanced and the PC. 1 Launch the HyperTerminal program to open the HyperTerminal screen. 2 Double-click the option for the Hawki Advanced HyperTerminal session to open the session. 3 Press enter twice to display the Hawki Advanced s Main Menu (Figure 5).
