3 Course Overview Portable Document Format (PDF) is the standard for the secure and reliable distribution and exchange of electronic documents and forms around the world. CutePDF Writer (formerly CutePDF Printer) is a free version of commercial PDF creation software. CutePDF Writer installs itself as a printer subsystem. This enables virtually any Windows application (must be able to print) to create professional quality PDF documents. CutePDF allows you to turn any document into a PDF file. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader (a PDF viewer) to open and read the document. Select Print from any application, choose CutePDF Printer, and the software saves this new PDF to the hard disk drive. Despite being freeware, the software does not include any annoying ads or marring watermarks. Prerequisite Ms Windows/ Must be able to print a document. Objectives After completing this course you should be able to: Install the CutePDF Writer software. To use CutePDF Writer to save any document in PDF format. 5 Introduction The following is a list of some of the advantages of using CutePDF Writer. Freeware Create professional quality PDF files from almost any printable document. Free for personal and commercial use. No watermarks. No popup Web advertisements. Installation and System Requirements Works with Acrobat Reader 5.0, 5.1, Adobe Reader 6.0 recommended. Does not require Adobe Acrobat Writer to run. Microsoft Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Internet Explorer Browser 5.0. or higher. Install CutePDF Writer From the Windows Desktop, double click on Ms Internet Explorer. The UP Web Homepage will appear on the screen. In the URL/Address box type in the following address: ftp://ftp.up.ac.za/pub/windows/cutepdfwriter/ The following screen will appear: Double-click on the CuteWriter.exe icon to install CutePDF Writer. 6 Click on the Save button to save the installation file on the hard disk drive of your computer. OR Click on the Open button to install CutePDF Writer from the FTP site. If the installation file is saved on the hard disk drive of your computer, doubleclick on the installation file to start installing the program. The following screen will then appear: Click on Ok to begin installing CutePDF Printer. The CutePDF WinZip Self-Extractor screen will appear in the background. The CutePDF Printer Setup screen will appear: (OPL042) October 2004 Page 6 of 10

7 Click on Yes to install CutePDF Printer on your computer. The Software Licence Agreement dialog will appear: Click on the Yes button to accept all the terms of the preceding License Agreement. CutePDF Printer is installed on your computer. The following screen will then appear: Click on the Ok button. Double-click on the converter.exe icon to install the Ghost script converter. 8 Click on the Save button to save the installation file on the hard disk drive of your computer. OR Click on the Open button to install the converter from the FTP site. If the installation file is saved on the hard disk drive of your computer, doubleclick on the installation file to start installing the program. The following screen will then appear: Click on the Setup button to install the GNU Ghost script converter. Create PDF Files To use CutePDF Writer, open the document (Ms Word, Ms Excel, Ms PowerPoint) that you would like to print to PDF. From the Menu bar, click on File Print. The Print dialog appears on the screen: (OPL042) October 2004 Page 8 of 10

9 Click on the drop-down arrow of the Name box, to see a list of all available printers. Click on CutePDF Writer. In the Page Range, select the pages to be saved in PDF format. Click on the Ok button. The Save As dialog appears on the screen prompting you to select a destination directory and a filename for your output file. Select a destination folder by clicking on the down-arrow of the Save in box. Click in the File name field and enter a descriptive filename for the PDF file. Click on the Save button. Read PDF Files To open or read the PDF file created, you require Adobe Acrobat Reader. Activate Windows Explorer as well as the destination folder where the PDF file was saved. Double-click on the name of the PDF file. Adobe Acrobat Reader will be activated and the PDF will appear on the screen. Print the CutePDF Manual From the Windows Desktop, double click on Ms Internet Explorer. The UP Web Homepage will appear on the screen. (OPL042) October 2004 Page 9 of 10
