Examples are: [length] [MF=E] An OR sign (a ertical bar) separates alternatie entries. You must specify one, and only one, of the entries unless you allow an indicated default. Examples are: [REREADLEAVE] [length's'] { } Braces enclose alternatie entries. You must use one, and only one, of the entries. Examples are: BFTEK={SA} {KD} {addressso} Sometimes alternatie entries are shown in a ertical stack of braces. An example is: MACRF={{(R[CP])}{(W[CPL])} {(R[C],W[C])}} In the example aboe, you must choose only one entry from the ertical stack.... An ellipsis indicates that the entry immediately preceding the ellipsis might be repeated. For example: (dcbaddr,[(options)],...) A indicates that a blank (an empty space) must be present before the next parameter. UPPERCASE BOLDFACE Uppercase boldface type indicates entries that you must code exactly as shown. These entries consist of keywords and the following punctuation symbols: commas, parentheses, and equal signs. Examples are: CLOSE,,,,TYPE=T MACRF=(PL,PTC) xx z/os V1R5.0 DFSMSdfp Storage Administration Reference
23 UNDERSCORED UPPERCASE BOLDFACE Underscored uppercase boldface type indicates the default used if you do not specify any of the alternaties. Examples are: [EROPT={ACCSKPABE}] [BFALN={FD}] Lowercase Italic Lowercase italic type indicates a alue to be supplied by you, the user, usually according to specifications and limits described for each parameter. Examples are: number image-id count. About This Document xxi

Summary of Changes for SC z/os Version 1 Release 5 New Information Deleted Information This document contains information preiously presented in z/os Version 1 Release 3 DFSMSdfp Storage Administration Reference. SC The following sections summarize the changes to that information. This edition includes the following new information: The maximum number of stripes for an extended format sequential data set has been increased from 16 to 59. DFSMS supports 384TRACK recording technology for mountable tape media cartridges. OAM supports cycle start time, cycle end time, and OSMC processing system attributes for object backup storage groups. DFSMS supports the multi-tiered storage group function for conentional olume selection. When you enable this function, SMS selects olumes in the order the storage groups are listed by the ACS storage group selection routines. You can specify Multi-Tiered SG (Y) in the storage class to enable this function. DFSMS supports the RACF FACILITY profile STGADMIN.IFG.READVTOC.olser, which controls the ability to obtain READ access to the VTOC or VTOC index. DFSMS supports the SMS copy pool construct. You can use a copy pool to define a set of storage groups that are processed collectiely for fast replication functions such as FlashCopy and SnapShot. DFSMShsm manages full-olume fast replication backup ersions using copy pool backup storage groups. DFSMS supports the SETSMS SAVESCDS command, which you can use to sae the actie ACDS as an SCDS if the current SCDS and its backup are lost. DFSMS supports the GDS_RECLAIM keyword in the IGDSMSxx member of PARMLIB. You can use this keyword to preent SMS from performing GDS reclaim processing automatically. You can use DFSMS in DFSMSts mode. DFSMS supports the software support for the IBM TotalStorage tape system 3592 Model J. Change the number of seconds that the DSS component of SMS will wait during backup processing for quiesce data set requests to complete (DSSTIMEOUT). 27 Chapter 1. Introducing the Storage Management Subsystem This chapter introduces the Storage Management Subsystem (SMS). In doing so, it explains arious applications of the Interactie Storage Management Facility (ISMF) so that you can use them to define your storage management policy and manage your SMS configurations. In addition, it proides an oeriew of the preparatory tasks for implementing SMS and explores considerations for running SMS in a Parallel Sysplex enironment and on mixed DFSMS releases. Understanding the Storage Management Subsystem The Storage Management Subsystem (SMS) is a DFSMS facility designed for automating and centralizing storage management. Using SMS, you can describe data allocation characteristics, performance and aailability goals, backup and retention requirements, and storage requirements to the systems. SMS improes storage space use, allows central control of external storage, and enables you to manage storage growth more efficiently. With SMS, you can easily manage conersion between deice types and ultimately moe toward system-managed storage. Using the Interactie Storage Management Facility The Interactie Storage Management Facility (ISMF) proides a series of applications for storage administrators to define and manage SMS configurations. You can use these applications to: Define SMS base configuration information. Define, alter, delete, or copy indiidual SMS classes, storage groups, aggregate groups, optical libraries, optical dries, and tape libraries. Display parameters and alues of indiidual SMS classes, storage groups, aggregate groups, mountable optical olumes, optical dries, mountable tape olumes, tape libraries and optical libraries. Generate, sae and manage lists of SMS classes, storage groups, aggregate groups, mountable optical olumes, optical libraries, optical dries, mountable tape olumes and tape libraries. Edit ACS routines. Define, alter, and execute ACS test cases. Validate the correctness and completeness of an SMS configuration. Actiate an SMS configuration.
