Foreword This South African standard was approved by the Department of Transport's Technical Committee for Standards and Procedures (TCSP) for traffic law enforcement equipment (StanSA TC 78, Traffic law enforcement equipment), in accordance with procedures of Standards South Africa, in compliance with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT agreement. This document was published in November This document supersedes SABS :1998 (first edition). SANS 1795 consists of the following parts, under the general title Road traffic law enforcement systems: Part 0: General requirements. Part 1: Laser speed measuring equipment. Part 2: Radar speed measuring equipment. Part 3: Distance-over-time speed measuring equipment (fixed distance/variable time). Part 4: Distance-over-time speed measuring equipment (variable distance/variable time). Part 5: Data capturing and recording devices for road traffic law enforcement. A vertical line in the margin shows where the text has been technically modified by amendment No. 1. Annex A forms an integral part of this document.

5 Road traffic law enforcement systems Part 1: Laser speed measuring equipment 1 Scope This part of SANS 1795 specifies mechanical, electrical and operational requirements for laser speed measuring equipment that is intended for traffic law enforcement and prosecution purposes. 2 Normative references The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of SANS All standards are subject to revision and, since any reference to a standard is deemed to be a reference to the latest edition of that standard, parties to agreements based on this part of SANS 1795 are encouraged to take steps to ensure the use of the most recent editions of the standards indicated below. SANS , Road traffic law enforcement systems Part 0: General requirements. 3 Definitions and abbreviations For the purposes of this part of SANS 1795, the definitions and abbreviations given in clause 3 of SANS apply. 4 General requirements The requirements given in clause 4 of SANS apply. 5 Metrological requirements The requirements given in clause 5 of SANS apply, with the following modifications: a) In 5.2, delete the existing text and insert the following: The result of a measurement shall be displayed in digital form, in kilometres per hour The speed display resolution shall be 1 km/h or better for all speed measurements in the given speed measuring range (see 5.3). 3
