It will be encourged and supported the use of GNU/Linux in the form of Ubuntu LTS distribution. In the following it will be discussed how to set up and configure an Ubuntu Virtualbox virtual machine that has all the necessary material for doing the lab exercise. Requirements: C/C++ (all systems) OpenGL [C/C++] (all systems: windows?) Panda3D [C++] (only linux) Blender [application] (all systems) 1 What you need During this course we will do a lot of coding in C/C++ using OpenGL and Panda3D. To do that, we will use a GNU/Linux distribution, Ubuntu LTS. All the things we need are: GNU/g++ compiler Eclipse IDE OpenGL libraries Panda3D SDK In the rest of this document it will be illustrated how to set up all the requirements. 1

2 2 How to Since it is strongly recommended to use a GNU/Linux distribution, at least to obtain the support of TAs, this section describes how to set up a virtual machine running Ubuntu. Those of you who already use a GNU/Linux distro can skip to sec Guide This section consists in a step-by-step guide to set the software environment for the course. Virtualbox virtualization software is used to manage and run the virtual machine, you can download the latest version at and install the one that matches your host operating system. After that you can download the Ubuntu iso from /ubuntu desktop-i386.iso, the 32bit version is used in order to avoid some strange compatibility issues. 3.1 Creating the VM This is really simple, just do the following steps depicted in fig Customizing Fig. 2 shows you how to set some useful options of your vm. 3.2 Installing Ubuntu This is a straightforward process, just follow the procedure depicted in fig. 2. Note: please do not make update with ubuntu utility Software Updater. Finally in order to mount the shared folder in ubuntu you need to have installed Virtualbox guest addidtions sec , after that you have to add your user to the vboxsf group $ sudo usermod -a -G vboxsf <username> then create a folder that is the mout point of the virtual file system $ sudo mkdir /media/mysharedfolder and then mount it $ sudo mount -t vboxsf -o uid=user_name,gid=user_name MySharedFolder /media/mysharedfolder Installing guest additions Start the Ubuntu VM and once it has finished just click on Devices Insert Guest Additions CD image and follow the procedure Installing packages In this section we will cover the installation of all the packages. First of all you have to launch a terminal, fig. 3, clicking on the dash home icon and typing in the correspondent input region. Now you can update the system by typing the following at the command prompt $ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade Now we are going to install some basic requirments $ sudo apt-get install build-essential libtool autotools-dev and the OpenGL utility toolkit (glut) $ apt-get install freeglut3-dev and Eclipse $ sudo apt-get install eclipse-cdt 2

3 Panda3D This part covers the installation of Panda3D SDK and Bullet physics engine under Ubuntu bit. First of all download the deb package from panda3d1.8_1.8.1~precise_i386.deb after that open terminal and type: $ sudo dpkg -i /path/to/panda3d1.8_1.8.1~precise_i386.deb If terminal returns some error, try to obtain all dependencies (should be written which). Then we have to install the python includes, so at the terminal prompt type $ sudo apt-get install python2.7-dev Bullet physics Now we are going to compile and install the Bullet engine. So download the source package from (version 2.80 is mandatory) now open the terminal and type $ sudo apt-get install automake libtool autotools-dev $ tar zxf bullet-2.80-rev2531.tgz $ cd bullet-2.80-rev2531 $./autogen.sh;./configure; make; sudo make install Installing packages (DIP course) This process is really similar to the one described before. In this case instead of installing glut we install the opencv libraries $ sudo apt-get install libopencv-dev 3.3 Configuring Eclipse To develop the code is often used an Integrated development environment (IDE). Before the configuration of your IDE, check with a simple code example (search on the web) if your Panda3D has been successfully installed. Take a look at the section for an example of makefile. In order to use Eclipse just follow the steps reported in fig. 1. For QT creator follow the steps reported in 3.4. If you prefer use a text editor and makefile follow the steps in 3.5. Eclipse C++ project settings for Panda3D Finally you have to setup your eclipse project (take a look at fig. 1) by adding these include directories /usr/include/panda3d /usr/include/python2.7 /usr/local/include/bullet this library directory /usr/lib/panda3d and these libraries panda pandafx pandaexpress pandabullet p3dtoolconfig p3dtool p3pystub p3direct p3framework BulletCollision BulletSoftBody BulletDynamics LinearMath Finally for those of you who are using the virtual machine one more step has to be done. We have to edit the /etc/config.prc (you have to "sudo" open that file) commenting the line load-display pandagl and uncommenting #load-display tinydisplay line. That s all! 3

4 3.4 Configuring QT creator for Panda3D In substitution of Eclipse, someone use QT creator as IDE. Using qt-creator the error obtained is eigen/dense no such file or directory and to solve it you need to follow these steps: go here and download the Eigen 3.2.1; extract the file; copy the folder Eigen in the the usr/include/ using: $ sudo cp -R -p /source_directory /usr/include/ Note: to get the right path of source_directory open the folder where the Eigen folder is included which should be something like "eigen-eigen-6b38706d90a9", click with right button -> properties -> path. The final step is to set the.pro file in Qt-Creator as follows. QT += core gui greaterthan ( QT_ MAJOR_ VERSION, 4): QT += widgets TARGET = name_ of_ project TEMPLATE = app SOURCES += main. cpp \ LIBS += -L/ usr / lib / panda3d LIBS += - lp3framework LIBS += - lpanda LIBS += - lpandafx LIBS += - lpandaexpress LIBS += - lp3dtoolconfig LIBS += - lp3dtool LIBS += - lp3pystub LIBS += - lp3direct INCLUDEPATH += / usr / include / python2.7 INCLUDEPATH += / usr / include / panda3d INCLUDEPATH += / usr / include / Eigen 3.5 The Makefile way Sometimes it may be preferable not to use an IDE. Using the Makefile utility we can compile a simple project in a really easy way. A Makefile is a list of things to do to get a goal. These rules are written in a special file, named Makefile respecting a simple syntax that is: target : dependencies actions You can have more dependencies separated by <space> as well as more actions separeted by <ret>. Remember that it is mandatory to indent each action by a <tab>. An example of a basic Makefile for compiling a simple opengl program is as follow 4

CC = g++ CFLAGS = -g -Wall SRC = main. cpp PROG = run LIBS = -L/ usr / lib / panda3d -lglut -lglu -lsdl -lpanda - lpandafx - lpandaexpress - lpandabullet - lp3dtoolconfig - lp3dtool - lp3pystub - lp3direct - lp3framework - lbulletcollision - lbulletdynamics - llinearmath INCL = -I/ usr / include / python2.7 -I/ usr / include / panda3d -I/ usr / local / include / bullet $( PROG ): $( SRC ) $(CC) $( SRC ) -o $( PROG ) $( CFLAGS ) $( INCL ) $( LIBS ) clean : rm -f $( PROG ) 4 Importing an existent VM You can easily import an existent VM using the Import Appliance of Virtualbox. During this process remember to override the mac address of the virtual NIC. However you might exiprience an error while importing the VM. In case of error: VBOX_E_FILE_ERROR (0x80bb0004) the solution can be found here Basically: 5

6 Extract the files contained in the.ova through: Windows: with an application for file archiver, like 7-zip Unix: with command $ tar xvf Ubuntu.ova -C./my_localtion/ The results are three files:.vmdk.mf.ovf Create a new VM with Virtualbox Type: Ubuntu (32bit) Hard drive: select Use an existing virtual hard drive file and link the.vmdk file extracted before. 5 Do it at your own (risk :) If you already use a GNU/Linux distribution you just have to install the required software by using your package-manager: such as apt-get if debian based, yum if red-hat based etc. Depdending on your distro the package name may be slightly different. Moreover you have to hope that panda3d is packaged in some way for your distro, otherwise you have to install all the dependencies by hand first and then download and install the package of panda that you find at sdk&version=
