1 Volume: Assessment Task Grade: 5 Strand: Shape and Space (Measurement) Outcome: 4 SPECIFIC LEARNER OUTCOMES Shape and Space (Measurement SS4 Demonstrate an understanding of volume by: selecting and justifying referents for cm3 or m units estimating volume, using referents for cm3 or m3 measuring and recording volume (cm3 or m3) constructing right rectangular prisms for a given volume. PROCESSES Communication (C), Connections (CN), Mental Mathematics and Estimation (ME), Problem Solving (PS), Reasoning (R), Technology (T), Visualization (V) C, CN, ME, PS, R, V EVIDENCE the student has achieved the outcomes Each student will: Represent the 3 dimensions required to calculate the volume of a rectangular prism. Explain the method of determining the volume of containers and use cm 3 as the unit to describe volume. Estimate the volume of an irregular shape using cm 3. Determine the volume of an irregular shape using words and diagrams. TEACHER NOTES In this assessment task, students will be asked to demonstrate their understanding of volume. They will create, sketch/model, and determine the volume of a container (box) in Part A. In Part B, students will estimate and determine the volume of an irregular shape. Materials required: die numbered from 2-7 (change the 1 to a 7), centimeter cubes, and pencil Students should use cm 3. Ordering volume is also a part of this outcome but is not addressed in this on-line lesson. Students in Grade 5 should not be expected to generalize and use rules until Grade 6 (i.e.: length x width x height). Early finishers could compare the volume of their container (box) with others from Part A, or they can number cubes with larger numbers to create larger boxes. Page 1 of 17
