1 SimLab 14.3 Release Notes Highlights SimLab 14.0 introduced new graphical user interface and since then this has evolved continuously in subsequent versions. In addition, many new core features have been added and several bugs resolved. The enhancements, new features and critical bug fixes are listed below. Import Enhancements Discrete Models Point Body - Extended to import *.prof format. Abaqus Support reading of flux, convection and temperature boundary conditions referred in multiple load steps. While reading contact surfaces, solid element face sets will be created in addition to contacts and they are linked to contacts. Entity modification of the solid element face sets will update the corresponding contacts and also vice versa. Results Option added to split the faces based on angle or feature automatically during results import. H3D - Support added to read SPC force, heat flux and thermal gradient results component. Graphics/User Interface Rotation performance improved if the Temperature load marker is available on large assemblies. Improved cutting plane display such that mesh control is displayed on the clipped faces Performance improved while enabling cutting plane for large assemblies Define Axis - Local coordinate option added. By enabling this option, any one of the axes (X/Y/Z) of local coordinate systems can be selected to define axis. In define plane, renamed "Bounded Plane" to "Fit to model". By default, this toggle is turned on and it create plane that spans the model. Turn off this toggle will create finite plane based on the entity selected to define the plane. Assembly Browser o Option to display mesh control, property ID, property, material ID and material for each body is supported. Simlab 14.3 Release Notes 1
2 o Enhanced to open assigned body mesh control, material and property from assembly browser. Mesh Control Browser - Support to display and modification of Body Mesh Control in tabular form. Loads and Constraints Browser o Separate grouping for each loads and constraints type is created. o Option to review loads and constraints in tabular form is supported for convection, radiation, solid pretension and sets. These tabular review tools are called managers and it allows editing of the load magnitude / parameters. o Contact manager is enhanced to support Permas parameters. o Contact manager is enhanced to support OptiStruct Contact property parameters (PCONT) - Friction Coefficient, Elastic Slip, Pad Thickness, Gap Stiffness. o Create unique pretension for each face option supported in right click of bolt pretension item. This option is used to separate Abaqus/OptiStruct bolt pretension object for each face. o Option added to Sets. Right click and Show elements displays solid element layers attached to the face nodes o Option added to visualize contour plot for varying enforced constraints Group Browser- Update button is added in modify mode. This allows to modify the group several times without closing the dialog. Inspect > Nodes > by region - Create Group option is added. Enabling this option will create a group with nodes. Inspect > Elements > by region - Create Group option is added. Enabling this option will create a group with elements. The zoom in/out behavior is enhanced. The model at the cursor locate will not move when zooming. File > Preferences o Supported shortcut keys for Graphics right click options. o Shortcut key to hide (H) and unhide the entities hide by the last hide operation (Shift + H) is added. Ctrl + H will hide the last set of entities that are displayed. o Number of backups can be specified for hide/unhide actions. o Support added to control the zoom speed using the mouse wheel. o Scribble and Fit view operations are supported for HM mouse settings. 3 Geometry > Face > Modify > Flatten Face Option added to collapse the element on the adjacent faces. Geometry > Body > Create > Block Supports Tet4, Hex8 and Wedge6 elements. Geometry > Body > Create > Cylinder Mesh pattern on the disc face is improved. Meshing Mesh > Mesh controls > Washer Added a support to automatically extract the circles based on radius range for washer mesh control. Support added to create groups for washer faces which are generated by washer mesh controls. Washer face groups will be created during surface mesh operation. Mesh > Modify > Dropdown > Change Mesh Pattern Enhanced to maintain same orientation on the connected R-tria surfaces. Mesh > Verify > Quality Cleanup support is extended for Tri and Tet Height quality Assembly Assembly > Modify > Align > Features Option enhanced to project nodes based on features like Cylinders, Cones, Circles and Arcs. Note that this works on entities that have feature information. Assembly > Imprint > Edges on Edges Undo operation supported. Assembly > Imprint > Edges on Faces Redesigned the user interface. By default, edges will be imprinted on the faces. If close gap option is ON, based on the distance between input edges and faces, either it will create face between them or input edge will be moved to the face and make connection. Local re-mesh option to re-mesh the imprinted faces. Undo operation supported. FEM FEM > Element > Modify Simlab 14.3 Release Notes 3
4 Converting elements from lower to higher order (or) higher to lower order will update the nodes of the connected RBEs. Analysis Model checker tool added to identify free bar elements and free RBE elements in the model which will lead to error while solving. Initial conditions dialog supported to define initial temperature and initial velocity for analysis setup. Connect faces tool added to connect surfaces using shape function based MPC. This tool supports connecting both matching and non-matching mesh surfaces. Export of contact definition file is enhanced to write out group name based definition. Option added to define time dependent sink temperature in Convection dialog using amplitude table. Option to vary friction coefficients defined in surface interaction is supported in load case dialog. Pretension node id can be specified while creating solid pretension for Abaqus, OptiStruct, Ansys and ADVENTURECluster solvers. Mass dialog is enhanced to record export of mass properties while recording script. Export Abaqus Set based output request can be defined. Supported Gap radiation, Hard-Augmented Lagrange type, friction parameters slip tolerance and elastic slip tolerance in surface interaction dialog. Supported radiation boundary condition to define surface radiation for heat transfer analysis. Elastic moduli and Poisson s ratio can be defined as a function of temperature. OptiStruct Explicit contact types PCONTX and PCNTX24 are supported. Fatigue analysis is supported. Fatigue loading and material definitions are supported. Fatigue responses Life, Damage and Factor of Safety are supported. Results Results > Frequency Response Response plots are displayed in a split window. This helps to visualize both the model and plot simultaneously. Input parameters can be modified and the plots are updated in real time. Simlab 14.3 Release Notes 4
5 Advanced Advanced > Bolt Modeling > 3D Bolt > Thread Pretension Local cylindrical coordinate creation for Permas thread pretension is enhanced such that Z direction always points from bolt head to tail. Advanced > Powertrain > Bearings Enhanced to create bearing without snap ring slot. Advanced > Trials > Create LED Option added to create vias internal cuts on PCB. Scripting Project > Play > Auto Success and Failure status will be printed in "ProjectLogFile.txt" file. In addition to that, line number will be printed for failure case. It helps to locate the failure function in the script. Added a script utility function getgroupswithsubstring to collect the group names based on the given sub string. Simlab 14.3 Release Notes 5
