3 Hands-on Demonstration: Contact Tool Position on Area Milling Boundaries Trim boundaries can now use a Contact tool position. This allows you to more accurately machine the area you wish to finish in Contour Area operations that use the Area Milling Drive Method. In addition, Contact tool position allows you to create an open trim boundary defined from points or curves. Do you have a question? 4 Prerequisites: 1. You will need access to NX CAM in order to run this demonstration. 2. If you haven t done so already, download and unzip Contact Tool Position on Area Milling Boundaries.7z. You will find the.7z file attached directly to this Tech Tip article in the NX Manufacturing Forum. Demo: 1. Open contact_containment.prt in NX. Create a closed contact boundary from edge curves 2. In the background of the graphics window, right-click and choose Orient View Top. 3. Select FIXED_CONTOUR. Notice that the entire top of the part is machined. 4. Double-click FIXED_CONTOUR to edit the operation. 5. Click Specify Trim Boundaries. 4
5 6. Select Curves from the Selection Method list. 7. Select Tangent Curves from the Curve Rule list in the Top Border Bar. 8. Select the curve indicated below to create the trim boundary. 9. Be sure eight curves have been selected and the following options have been specified. 10. Click OK. 11. Click Generate. 5
6 12. In the background of the graphics window, right-click and choose Orient View Front. 13. Click Display next to Specify Trim Boundaries. 14. Select Verify and select the tool path in the graphics window to position the tool as indicated below. Because the tool tip is projected onto the boundary, the tool cuts above the boundary. 15. Click Cancel in the Tool Path Visualization dialog box. 16. Click Specify Trim Boundaries. 17. Select Contact from the Tool Position list. This option is new. The Boundary Type options display when using Contact, allowing you to create an Open or Closed boundary. 18. Click OK. 19. Click Generate. 20. Click Display next to Specify Trim Boundaries. 21. Select Verify and select the tool path to position the tool as indicated below. The tool contacts the boundary. 6
7 22. Click Cancel in the Tool Path Visualization dialog box. Create a closed contact boundary from sketch curves 23. In the background of the graphics window, right-click and choose Orient View Top. 24. Click Specify Trim Boundaries. 25. Expand the List area of the Trim Boundaries dialog box and click Remove. 26. In the background of the graphics window, right-click and choose Refresh to remove the displayed boundary. 27. Select Curves from the Selection Method list. 28. Select Connected Curves from the Curve Rule list in the Top Border Bar. 29. Select the sketch curve to create the boundary. 30. Select Specify from the Plane list. 31. Select Inferred from the Specify Plane list. 32. Select the top plane of the part as the boundary plane. 33. Select Outside from the Side Trimmed list. 34. Click OK. 7
8 35. Click Generate. Changing the tool axis when using a closed contact boundary Changing the tool axis does not change the cut area when using Contact. 36. Click Verify. 37. Select the 3D Dynamic tab. 38. Click Play. 39. Click OK in the Tool Path Visualization dialog box. 40. In the Tool Axis section of the dialog box, select Specify Vector from the Axis list. 41. Select Two Points from the Specify Vector list. 42. Select the two points indicated below to define the tool axis. 8
9 43. Click Generate. 44. Click Verify. 45. Click Play. When the Tool Position is set to Contact, the cut area does not change when the tool axis changes. When the Tool Position is set to On, the cut area shifts when the tool axis changes. 46. Click OK in the Tool Path Visualization dialog box. Create an open contact boundary Contact tool position allows you to create an open boundary defined from points or curves. 47. Click Specify Trim Boundaries. 48. In the List area of the Trim Boundaries dialog box, click Remove. 49. Right-click and select Refresh to remove the displayed boundary. 50. Select Points from the Selection Method list. 9
10 51. Click two points to create a line that bisects the part. The line must pass completely through the part. 52. Select Open from the Boundary Type list. This option is new and is only available when creating a Contact boundary. 53. Select Left from the Side Trimmed list. 54. Click OK. 55. In the Tool Axis section of the dialog box, select +ZM Axis from the Axis list. 56. Click Generate. The left side (determined relative to the line vector) is trimmed away. 10
11 Create a closed contact boundary from noncontiguous curves Gaps between selected curve segments close automatically when creating a closed boundary. 57. Click Specify Trim Boundaries. 58. In the List area of the Trim Boundaries dialog box, click Remove. 59. Right-click and choose Refresh to remove the displayed boundary. 60. Select Curves from the Selection Method list. 61. Select Inferred from the Specify Plane list. 62. Select the top plane of the part as the boundary plane. 63. Click Select Curve. 64. Select the sketch curve (1) and the two edge curves (2,3) indicated below. The Alert indicates that the gaps will be closed. 65. Be sure Contact is still selected from the Tool Position list. 66. Select Closed from the Boundary Type list. 67. Select Outside from the Side Trimmed list. 11
12 68. Click OK. 69. Click Generate. 70. Click Display next to Specify Trim Boundaries and notice the closed boundary. 71. Click OK to complete the operation. The other operations in this part illustrate some additional variations of trim boundaries with contact tool positions. 72. Close the part without saving when you have finished. 12
