3 Hands-on Demonstration: Saving and Retrieving Simulation Settings Two new options have been added to the Simulation Control Panel dialog box that allow you to save frequently used simulation settings and then load the saved settings when needed. 4 Prerequisites: 1. You will need access to NX CAM in order to run this demonstration. 2. If you haven t done so already, download and unzip FastInteractive.7z. You will find the.7z file attached directly to this Tech Tip article in the NX Manufacturing Forum. Demo: For this demo, you will retrieve a part file and machine tool assembly from the NC Simulation Samples library. For this demo, you will retrieve a part file and machine tool assembly from the NC Simulation Samples library. 1. Select Menu Help Manufacturing Tutorials. 2. In the Shortcuts section at the bottom of the Manufacturing Tutorials home page, select Open a Sample Part. 3. Scroll down and select sim08_mill_5ax_cam_fanuc_mm.prt from the NC Simulation Samples list. 4. Click OK in the Open dialog box. You will begin by observing the simulation defined by the default settings. 5. In the Program Order view of the Operation Navigator, select ROUGHING. 6. Click Simulate Machine. 4

5 7. Expand the Simulation Settings and the Manage Settings sections of the Simulation Control Panel dialog box. The Manage Settings section of the dialog box is new. Notice that Current Settings is set to None. None indicates that you have not loaded settings for this simulation. The default settings currently defined in the Simulation Settings dialog box are used if you do not load simulation settings. 8. Click Play. The simulation you see is defined by the default settings. 9. Click Reset Machine. Clicking Reset Machine sets the simulation back to the beginning and restores the IPW if one exists. Next, you will load a simulation settings file that defines a fast, interactive check (no IPW, no gouge/collision check, just tool path replay). 10. Click Load Simulation Settings. Note: Customer Defaults will determine the directory in which the system searches for saved simulation settings if specified: File tab Utilities Customer Defaults Manufacturing Simulation & Visualization ISV tab, Saved Simulation Settings Directory. 11. Browse to the simulation setting files you downloaded earlier, select FastInteractive.xml, and click OK. 5

6 Current Settings displays the name of the loaded settings file. 12. Click Play. When the simulation has completed, notice that the Load Simulation Settings option is grayed out. This indicates that FastInteractive.xml is still loaded. The settings for FastInteractive.xml are displayed in the Simulation Settings dialog box. 13. Click Reset Machine. Next, you will observe how changing a simulation setting such as the visualization speed unloads the selected settings file. 14. Click Play and slow down the Visualization Speed while playing. Notice that Current Settings has changed to None. By changing the visualization speed or any other simulation setting, you are no longer using the selected settings file and Current Settings returns to None to indicate this. 6

7 15. Click Close. Next, you will create a new simulation settings file by editing the FastInteractive.xml file and saving it under a new name. 16. With Roughing still selected in the Operation Navigator, click Simulate Machine. 17. Click Load Simulation Settings. 18. Select FastInteractive.xml and click OK. Current Settings displays the name of the loaded settings file; FastInteractive.xml. This is the file you will edit. 19. Click Simulation Settings to edit the file. 20. Select On from the Simulation Display list. 21. Select On from the Collision Detection list. 22. Click Specify Collision Pairs. 23. In the First Object section of the dialog box, select Class from the Filter list and _TOOL from the Name list. 24. In the Second Object section of the dialog box, select Class from the Filter list and _PART from the Name list. 25. Click OK in the Specify Collision Pairs dialog box. 26. Click OK in the Simulation Settings dialog box. 7

8 27. Select the Show 3D Material Removal check box. Notice that Current Settings displays None. This indicates that you have edited the previously loaded settings and are no longer using the FastInteractive.xml file. Now you will save your settings as a new simulation settings file. 28. Click Save Simulation Settings. 29. Type new_settings in the File name field and click OK. Current Settings now displays the name of the new file. 30. Click Play. 31. Click Reset Machine. 32. Click Close once the simulation is complete. 8

9 33. With Roughing still selected in the Operation Navigator, click Simulate Machine. Notice that Current Settings again displays None. Current Settings returns to None each time you select Close. 34. Click Play. The simulation uses the default settings. 35. Click Close. 36. Close the part without saving. 9
