2 Assemblies Working with Multiple Parts Multiple parts Internal - All stored in a single file External - Referenced from many files We ll use internal parts because they are easier Note the browser tree hierarchy Create a new part in an existing Assembly with the Part!Part!New Part menu (or browser right click) and entering a name. Active Part MD only allows you to modify the active part Designated by the solid icon in the desktop browser Activate by double-clicking or right-clicking on the part icon in the browser 5 6 Part Definitions and Instances If you see a part on the screen, you are looking at an instance of a part s definition Changing one instance changes all instances of a part Part names usually are same as the definition name, and the _# designates a particular instance. Assembly!Catalog shows all part definitions To make a dependent copy of a part right click and select Instance To make an independent copy of a part, use the Copy definition option Desktop Browser Right-click on part and select Copy to make a new instance of the same part Right-click and select Show Definition to jump to Assembly Catalog Assembly 3D Constraints Defines relationships between parts Eliminates Degrees of Freedom (DOF) 3 translational (X,Y,Z) 3 rotational (X,Y,Z) MD has four types of 3D constraints Mate (points, lines, surfaces) Flush (planes) Insert (cylinders) Angle (planes) Each type of constraint can have an offset or angle value which can be positive or negative 7 8

3 Constraint Details Mate Joins points, lines, planes, or non-planar faces Arrows opposite directions Most versatile most used Applies to: Plane Plane Line Plane Line Line Point Plane Point Line Point Point A sphere, cylinder, or cone tangent to a plane or to other spheres, cylinders, and cones Flush Aligns planar faces Arrows same directions Applies to: Plane Plane Angle Constraint Controls relative angle Arrows Trial and Error Applies to: Plane Plane Plane Line Line Line Insert Mate plane/plane and axis/axis Arrows opposite directions Applies to: Circle - Circle Today s Object Save start part from web site to your H: drive Identify parts base, bolt 9 10 Create a New Part Create and Activate the New Part Right click in browser New Part Name: LID LID_1 instance created and activated Sketch, profile, dimension, extrude a rectangle Start drawing in open space 3 x 3 Extrude 0.25 Dependent Part Copy Copy LID_1 Right click in browser Left click to insert ENTER to finish LID_2 created Change width of LID_1 from 3.0 to 1.0 LID_1 must be active part Edit ExtrusionBlind1 Update Part LID_2 automatically changes 11 12

4 Independent Part Copy We re lazy we ll copy the lid and change it to create the blue bar Create an independent copy of LID_1. Right click LID_1 in browser Show Definition Right click LID in catalog Copy Definition New name: BAR Left click to place Enter to end insert OK to close catalog Activate BAR_1 Change color Change thickness to.5 Add.25 hole in center (bar is 3 by 1 ) 13 Hints for Selecting Objects Assembly requires selection of a surface, line, or vertex on two different parts. The animated cursor means that you can left click to cycle through other possible selections, right click when the correct one is displayed. Command line options Clear, Next, Cycle, Point, Axis, Face, Accept Try to always select in unambiguous locations Wireframe may be easier Select on surfaces when possible Use browser to temporarily hide parts Zoom in (mouse roller is very useful) Use two or more windows Temporary Move 14 Move/Rotate Objects for Easier Selection Use Assembly!Power Manipulator to temporarily move/rotate object(s) Allows rotation and translation along all three axes Assembly!Update Assembly to reapply constraints Assemble BAR to BASE View!Toolbars!Desktop Toolbars!3D Constraints Show DOF for bar Right click BAR_1 in browser Check DOF Display Mate bottom of bar to bottom of slot Mate side of bar to side of slot Flush end of bar to end of base 15 16

5 Assemble Lids to Base Mate edge of base with edge of lid ( hinge ) Flush side of base with side of lid Angle constraint between top of base and top of lid Allows negative angles Edit constraint in browser window Just use trial and error to get a good value for lid angle Repeat for 2 nd lid Insert Bolt in Base Hide lids and bar Right-click in browser window and un-check Visible Rotate view to look at bottom of base Select bottom of bolt head and matching surface in the hole Two constraints in one Axes mated Surfaces mated One DOF still not constrained. What is it? Is it needed? Assembly Scenes Assembly Drawings A method of controlling the grouping and visibility of assembly parts Browser, Scene Tab Right Click New Scene Enter Name Control visibility of individual parts via browser Right click on scene, set explode factor to 3 All mate plane/plane constraints are offset by the explode factor Objects can be tweaked for better positioning Can have multiple scenes Used when placing an assembly on a drawing 19 Define a scene Drawing Layout, Create New View Set Data Set to desired scene 20

6 Rendering For the best quality shaded pictures of solid objects, use the View!Render!Render menu. This option will allow you to assign a materials to your parts and to create high quality raster images that can be included in documents and WWW pages Most useful for assemblies where each part has a different material System 3D Display Options Assist!Options, System, Properties Enable Material and Texture Display Example of a rendered assembly using applied materials and light sources Rendering Details - Load Materials View!Render!Materials Library Preview material types Import desired materials into this assembly file Rendering Details - Apply Materials View!Render!Materials Highlight desired material on left Attach Select part(s) to attach material to, RETURN to finish 23 24

7 Rendering Details - Render to Screen Orient the object as desired Rotate, zoom, pan, Parallel or Perspective Projection View!Render!Render Set Rendering Type = Photo Real Check Smooth Shade Check Apply Materials Set Destination = Viewport Select More Options Set Anti-Aliasing = High (smoothes stairstepped edges) Select Background Select Solid option Uncheck AutoCAD Background Select Custom Color - white Render 25 Rendering Details - Render to File Render to the screen until the desired image is obtained To write to a file use the additional step: Set Destination = File Select More Options (under Destination) Set File Type to TIFF 640x480 (VGA) Set Colors = 24 bits Render Specify file name Once you have the desired file, you can include it in your MS Word document by using Insert!Picture!From File menu 26 Perspective Projection A more realistic view Enable Rotate (Orbit) mode Right Click in window background Projection!Perspective More!Adjust Distance and Zoom as desired 27 Using an Image as a New Material View!Render!Materials, New Set the File Name to the desired image Material definition is stored with the file, but the the image file is referenced. Adjust Bitmap button controls how the image is mapped to the object. Fit to Object and Crop for images Transparency is also very useful Help for more information 28

8 Modifying an Existing Material Must already be imported into the assembly. Select Modify Color Roughness Transparency Bitmap Etc Only modifies this file s copy of the material Import into Microsoft Word or Powerpoint Render to a file Insert!Picture!From File Word: Right click, Format Picture Set Layout to Behind Text or In Front of Text to allow positioning anywhere on the page Wrap-up Import and attach materials as desired to each part of today s file Create one new material using the engage logo from the web site Create at least two rendered views and include them in a Word or Powerpoint document. 31
