2 Interface: Keys The most important t key in the program is (because some things don t change ) The arrow keys can be used to nudge objects around screen by the snap increment (which is zoom dependant). SHIFT Arrow key will nudge by 10x the snap increment Control left arrow will select previous this is a good one, but you have to do it right away! Setup keyboard shortcuts, and USE THEM! Hold down the delete key and THEN click on items to delete multiple objects

4 Performance: Hogs... Streaming http sites: admittedly, dl it is nice to pass the time while waiting for a Save to Central on Friday evening by watching a Youtube video or downloading a new purchase from itunes. But actually it is a very bad idea to do so, since both examples hog bandwidth on the network required to push and get the Building Information Model to the central file and back from it again. Virus scanners and mal-ware blockers: basically everything that monitors network traffic on the intranet will affect performance of a Save to Central Software updates: modern OS platforms have the tendency to perform unattended updates of installed software, either for the OS itself or for 3 rd party applications (such as Java, etc ) These are downloads that easily exceed hundreds of megabytes and result in significant network traffic P2P and FTP traffic: file exchange though P2P networks or via FTP while Saving to Central simply pyshould be avoided at any ygiven time. FTP exchange is probably worse, since most FTP clients optimize their performance by multiple simultaneous connections. Then there is little bandwidth left of the network to get the local file back to central. Video Chats, IP-telephony: both are pure bandwidth hogs and should never happen during a save to central Read those What s new in this release files - can save some embarrassing moments

14 Session 6 Detailing: Planning! Library of components (families don t have to be 3D) Separate documentation templates? Start generic, and increase detail as the project develops Place roughly, adjust with temporary dimensions Put in generic items (windows, toilets, furniture) and replace later Understand the view range tool! Anything in primary range is default style, anything set in view depth has its style overridden Use underlays and the linework tool to setup information such as eaves overhangs Use external information High-detail modeling not for the fain-hearted! Wonderful for data mining Consistency, computability, chocolate Only lock relationships when there is a specific reason to do so Pin reference information to avoid accidental bumps in the night

15 Session 7 SketchUp & Rhino: SketchUp: Easy to use / easy to abuse LOTS of new plug-ins Sectioning by group Mitred structural beams Rhino: Wow! Cool! Go talk to Martin!

16 Sessions 8&9 Families: You can nest detail components inside families to create highly detailed objects that are view and detail level specific Nested families used as swappable sub-components give maximum flexibility Don t make a family hosted if you don t need to Don t make in-place families unless you DO need to Choose your insertion point wisely Consider a folder within the project for project specific families, titleblocks, materials, etc. Use generic massing families to do pre-design studies Use line-based families for complex linear objects (cornice with dentil...) Use massing families to create a building envelope control made of glass - you can see exactly how much of your building extends beyond the envelope
