4 Safety precautions Safety precautions Safety precautions u The operation of medical appliances may be affected. u The Gigaset USB Adapter DECT can cause a buzzing noise in hearing aids. u Do not set the Gigaset USB Adapter up in bathrooms. u Do not use the Gigaset USB Adapter in environments exposed to explosion hazards. u Avoid the immediate proximity of heat sources such as radiators and do not expose the Gigaset USB Adapter to direct sunlight. u Always pass on the Gigaset USB Adapter DECT with the installation instructions and CD-ROM. u Use only the supplied USB cable for connecting your USB Adapter to the PC. u Do not insert or remove the USB cable during a storm. This could cause an electric shock. u Do not extend the USB cable. This could lead to higher EMV -radiation. u Dispose of devices in an environmentally friendly manner as per statutory requirements. The Gigaset USB Adapter DECT can be used in those countries listed on the adapter. Country-specific circumstances have been taken into consideration. Wireless transmission between the base station and portable part is based on the DECT Standard. The Gigaset USB Adapter DECT complies with the pertinent European requirements. Should there nevertheless be any picture and sound interference with satellite receivers, please consult your retailer to have your satellite receiver equipment tested for poor shielding. 5 Information about positioning the adapter Information about positioning the adapter Position and surface You should not place the Gigaset USB Adapter DECT in the immediate vicinity of other electronic equipment. Electrical devices can interfere with each other. Place the Gigaset USB Adapter on a level, non-slip surface. Protect particularly sensitive surfaces. Depending on the surroundings, the range for wireless connection outdoors is approx. 300 m, indoors approx. 50 m. Temperature and environmental conditions The Gigaset USB Adapter DECT is designed for use in enclosed rooms with a temperature range of +5 C to +45 C and 20 75% relative humidity. Overview Wireless connection with the Gigaset USB Adapter The Gigaset USB Adapter permits a wireless connection between a PC and a base station. For example, you can sit in your garden with a Laptop and still surf the Internet. The Gigaset USB Adapter is supplied with power via the USB port. i The Gigaset USB Adapter DECT is connected to the USB interface, but the PC acts as if it were connected to a COM interface. First select your languages and then you can either start installation straight away or read the instructions of the various devices. You should also consult the Readme file on the CD, as this may contain the latest changes. 7 Overview USB socket i The easiest way to set up your Gigaset USB Adapter is with the installation wizard, which runs automatically when you insert the CD-ROM. During installation, the installation wizard will prompt you to insert the USB cable. A USB cable can be inserted and removed while the PC is one. If the connected device has already been set up, Windows will recognise it automatically. The first time a new device is connected, Windows will launch its automatic hardware recognition tool. If you inserted the USB cable before the installation wizard prompted you to: ì Cancel automatic hardware recognition
8 Overview Local adapter and Remote adapter You can also determine the settings for the partner station on the local station (Gigaset USB Adapter). Base and Portable part Base station = Gigaset base station Portable part = handset, device registered with the base station. Example: Only a Gigaset USB Adapter of type Portable part can have an active connection to a Gigaset base station. 7
9 Connecting to your base station Connecting to your base station The Gigaset USB Adapter DECT can be operated on the following Gigaset base stations: Gigaset CX100/150isdn, Gigaset SX100/150isdn, Gigaset CX203/235isdn, Gigaset SX205/255isdn, Gigaset SX303/353isdn, Gigaset 4170/75isdn and Gigaset 3070/75isdn. The following operating systems are supported: Windows 98SE, Windows NT, Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. i Gigaset Repeater: The Gigaset Repeater cannot be used to extend the wireless range of the Gigaset USB Adapter. Several Gigaset USB Adapters If you are operating several Gigaset USB Adapters on a base station, please read Chapter "Several PCs sharing a base station" on page 15. Gigaset 3070/75isdn, Gigaset 4170/75isdn You have to update the Gigaset SX205/255isdn firmware. The firmware will be updated automatically if you activate the Check firmware version option during installation. Installation System requirements u u u u PC with operating system Windows 98SE, NT, ME, 2000 or XP 5 MB free hard disk memory 1 free USB socket 1 CD-ROM drive (or DVD drive) Installing the Gigaset USB Adapter DECT i Use the installation wizard to set up your Gigaset USB Adapter. The installation wizard will make sure that all the necessary settings and additional software have been included. The Gigaset USB Adapter should not be connected to the PC when you start installation. During installation, the installation wizard will prompt you to insert the USB cable. If it is already inserted, remove it and then re-insert it after a few moments. i If a dialogue window appears during installation informing you about a missing signature, click Continue installation. ì Make sure your base station is in idle state. 8
10 Installation ì Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The installation wizard will start automatically. If Autostart has been disabled on your system, launch the installation wizard manually: Open Windows Explorer Select the CD-ROM drive Double-click start.exe. This will start the installation wizard. ì Select the language. This opens the installation wizard's main menu. You can either read the Readme file or the Gigaset isdn series operating instructions, open Service & Support on the Internet, or start installation. ì Click Install software. ì Select your base station. ì If necessary, activate the Check firmware version option (not available for all base stations).! For Gigaset 4170/75isdn and Gigaset 3070/75isdn you will have to activate the Check firmware version option. ì Only for Gigaset SX205/255isdn, Gigaset SX303/353isdn, Gigaset 4170/75isdn and Gigaset 3070/75isdn: Activate the Wireless via Gigaset USB Adapter option. ì Only for Gigaset SX205/255isdn, Gigaset SX303/353isdn: If you want more than the wireless Internet connection, you can install additional software. You can choose the following software components: talk&surf 6.0 CAPI FAX The talk&surf software enables you to configure your base station and connected handsets. You can manage your directory and copy it to the handsets. You can also view your calls lists and manage the call charges. For further information please read the talk&surf 6.0 operating instructions. You only need the CAPI driver if you want to send faxes using your PC. For more information please read the Chapter "Installing the CAPI driver" in the talk&surf 6.0 operating instructions. You can send faxes from your PC if you connect the Gigaset USB Adapter directly to the USB port. For more information please read the corresponding chapter in the talk&surf 6.0 operating instructions. ì Select the installation folder. ì Start installation. ì When prompted, connect your Gigaset USB Adapter to your PC. This will start the Windows automatic hardware recognition. ì During hardware recognition, select the option Look for suitable driver for the device (the exact wording will depend on the Windows operating system you are using). ì Activate the option CD-ROM drives. 9
11 Installation ì Click browse and enter the following file: xxx ì Confirm installation of the USB driver with OK. During further installation, the configuration dialogue for your Gigaset USB Adapter will be opened. The Gigaset USB Adapter is assigned a COM port. After the USB Adapter has been installed, the wizard will install the software for your base station and any additional software required. ì Confirm successful installation with Close. ì Depending on the operating system, you may be prompted to reboot your PC. i If you want to install Acrobat Reader, cancel automatic reboot, install Acrobat Reader, and then reboot the PC manually. Resetting the Gigaset USB Adapter If you have already started using the Gigaset USB Adapter, but now want to install it with a different base station, you should first reset the USB Adapter to its default settings. All the data and registrations you have changed or made will be deleted. ì Run the Gigaset USB Adapters configuration program: Start > Programs > Gigaset > Configuration of USB Adapter ì Select the Local adapter tab. ì Select Reset and confirm the warning prompt. ì You should also reset the registration of the registered partner stations. ì Close the configuration program. After resetting, you can reinstall the T-Sinus 721. Follow the instructions in Chapter "Installing the Gigaset USB Adapter DECT" on page 8. 10
12 Configuration Configuration Launching the configuration program The installation wizard opens the configuration program and takes over registration of your Gigaset USB Adapter. If you want to change the settings later on, run the configuration program. ì Select Start > Programs > Configuration of USB Adapter. This opens the configuration program. It has four tabs where you can determine the settings for your Gigaset USB Adapter. Registering the Gigaset USB Adapter DECT with thebasestation i During initial installation, the installation wizard will guide you through the registration with the base station. To register the USB Adapter with a different base station: ì Open the Connection tab. ì The Status: section must display Configuration state. ì Open the Local adapter tab. ì In the Registered %s bases section, choose a free registration location. ì Put your base station into registration mode (see the base station operating instructions). ì Click Register. ì Enter the base station PIN (1 8 digits, factory setting 0000). The Gigaset USB Adapter will then register with your base station. After successful registration, you will find the name of your base station in the Registered %s bases field. For detailed explanations of the configuration program, please read the descriptions of the individual tabs. If registration is not possible, (base station not ready for registration or not connected to the power supply, wrong PIN), you will see a message indicating the cause of the problem. 11
13 Configuration Connection tab Connecting the Gigaset USB Adapters DECT to the PC Serial port: Status: No automatic detection at program start-up Data/wireless connection Connection partner: Field strength: / Quality: Radio link status: Data link status The Gigaset USB Adapter will look for a free COM port for connection. Manual changing of the setting is only necessary where several USB adapters are connected to the same PC/Laptop. Configuration state, once the port was found. If no port is found, the field remains empty. Select this option only if more than one Gigaset USB Adapter is connected. Then select a COM port in the upper pane. After successful registration, you will find the name of the connected base station here. If several base stations have been registered, select the base station your Gigaset USB Adapter is to set up a connection to. If your Gigaset USB Adapter has set up a connection to a base station, this field will show a bar diagram reflecting the reception strength and quality of the connection. If no connection is made, the fields remain empty. Depending on the surroundings, the range for wireless connection between local and partner station outdoors is approx. 300 m, indoors approx. 50 m. With an open connection, you will see Connection set up here. If no connection is made, the No connection field remains empty. With an open connection, you will see Connection set up here. If no connection is made, the unknown remains empty. 12
14 Configuration Local station tab Here you can make all the settings for data transmission, including the settings for the partner station. Identification Name Adapter type: Hardware version: / Firmware version: Reset The stations' names provide a fast overview. It's best to call the local station "PC", the partner stations by connected device, e. g. "Gigaset SX303/353isdn". You can change a station name by editing or entering the name in the name field, using letters, digits, space and special characters. The name must not exceed 20 characters. Your USB Adapter is operated as extension at the base station. The version numbers of the hardware and firmware are displayed. Use this function to restore the Gigaset USB Adapter connected to the PC to its factory settings. You will see a confirmation prompt which you have to acknowledge. All the parameters and registrations are returned to their default values. The partner station is not affected. If you want to completely delete the connection, you will have to run the Unregister function at the base station. Only then are all the connection parameters deleted. Registered base stations You can enter up to six base stations in the window. This allows you to connect the Gigaset USB Adapter flexibly to the one and then the other base station. Register Unregister Connect Create a new connection. ì Select a free registration location or registered base station. ì Put the base station to be connected into registration mode (see the base station operating instructions). ì Click Register. ì Enter the base station PIN (1 8 digits, factory setting 0000). Create a new connection. ì Select a registered connection. ì Click Unregister. The registered base station is removed from the list. Connect a registered connection. ì Select a registered connection. ì Click Connect. 13
15 Configuration Partner station tab When there is a connection, you can view the base station's settings. ì Open the Local adapter tab. ì Select a registered base station. ì Click Connect. ì Open the Remote adapter tab. This displays the base station's settings. Identification Name / Adapter type: / Hardware version: / Firmware version: This displays the data of the connected base station. Registered data terminals The window shows all the registered devices. On the left is the name, while on the right the active connection is indicated with a green arrow. If no device is connected, all the entries in the Remote adapter tab are shown as not active. 14
16 Gigaset Gigaset Information about the COM port Information about the COM port A COM port is a serial interface on the PC. It can be used to connect external devices such as a mouse with the PC. A PC has several COM ports: u COM 1, COM 2: Hardware-side, sockets on the PC for connecting devices with a serial connection u COM 3 etc.: software side, virtual interfaces that can be assigned to devices with USB connections Your Gigaset USB Adapter uses one of the software-side interfaces, e.g. COM 3 or COM 4. Information about operating the adapter If you use a Gigaset USB Adapter, you cannot use the channel bundling and fax functions of your Gigaset base station. Two PCs (one wireless, the other via USB) can however surf the Internet at the same time. 17 Information about operating the adapter Example: A PC and Laptop share a Gigaset base station. u Only one can set up the wireless connection. The connection can however be switched, see Chapter "Switching wireless connection" on page 16. u One of the two portable parts and the PC, with which the base station is connected, can surf the Internet at the same time. Switching wireless connection Example: User 1 is using the wireless connection. He wants to terminate the connection so that participant 2 can use it. User 1: ì Look for the icon for wireless connection in the status area of the tool bar (next to the clock). ì Right-click the wireless connection icon. ì Click Deactivate wireless operation or Prepare USB direct operation. Activate wireless operation Deactivate wireless operation Prepare USB direct operation Taskbar Icon User 2: ì Right-click the wireless connection icon. ì Click Activate wireless operation. Activate wireless operation Deactivate wireless operation Prepare USB direct operation i Activate wireless operation: Wireless mode remains deactivated until the computer is rebooted. Then wireless mode will be activated again. Prepare USB direct operation: Wireless mode remains deactivated until it is activated again manually. Rebooting the computer does not automatically activate wireless mode. 16
18 Trouble shooting Trouble shooting Checking the preconditions In the event of problems, check the following first: u All cables have been properly connected. u Is the distance between the base station and the portable part too large? If this could be the case, place the devices next to each other for testing. If the connection can now be set up, gradually increase the distance and check the connection quality in the Connection tab of the configuration program. You will find more information in Chapter "Information about positioning the adapter" on page 4. u Was registration error-free? If not, try repeating installation. Error messages in the configuration program Error message Cause Remedy No Gigaset USB Adapter DECT could be found Registration not possible. PIN is incorrect. The COM port is being used by another program. The base station may not be in registration mode or the wireless connection is interrupted. The PIN entered does not match the valid PIN. Close the application using the COM port. The device manager in the Windows control panel will show you how the ports are being used at the moment. Repeat registration with the base station in registration mode. See "Registering the Gigaset USB Adapter DECT with the base station" on page 11. If you have forgotten your PIN, reset the Gigaset USB Adapter to the factory setting, see Chapter "Resetting the Gigaset USB Adapter" on page 10. In factory setting, the PIN is
19 Trouble shooting Other errors Picture fault Screen problems with connected Gigaset USB Adapter DECT (e. g. slight flickering or Moiré). The loudspeaker buzzes when the Gigaset USB Adapter is connected. The DECT HF useful signal is influencing the monitor. DECT HF useful signal is being demodulated by the analogue components of the soundcard or the amplifiers of the speakers, thus causing the buzzing noise. Remedy Turn the Gigaset USB Adapter until the picture improves. Move the Gigaset USB Adapter further away from the monitor, or place something between the monitor and the USB Adapter. Turn the Gigaset USB Adapter until the picture improves. Move the Gigaset USB Adapter further away from the loudspeakers, or place something between the loudspeaker and the USB Adapter. 18

21 Guarantee certificate (United Kingdom) Without prejudice to any claim the user (customer) may have in relation to the dealer or retailer, the customer shall be granted a manufacturer's Guarantee under the conditions set out below: u In the case of new devices and their components exhibiting defects resulting from manufacturing and/or material faults within 24 months of purchase, Siemens shall, at its own option and free of charge, either replace the device with another device reflecting the current state of the art, or repair the said device. In respect of parts subject to wear and tear (including but not limited to, batteries, keypads, casing), this warranty shall be valid for six months from the date of purchase. u This Guarantee shall be invalid if the device defect is attributable to improper treatment and/or failure to comply with information contained in the user manuals. u This Guarantee shall not apply to or extend to services performed by the authorised dealer or the customer themselves (e.g. installation, configuration, software downloads). User manuals and any software supplied on a separate data medium shall be excluded from the Guarantee. u The purchase receipt, together with the date of purchase, shall be required as evidence for invoking the Guarantee. Claims under the Guarantee must be submitted within two months of the Guarantee default becoming evident. u Ownership of devices or components replaced by and returned to Siemens shall vest in Siemens. u This Guarantee shall apply to new devices purchased in the European Union. The Guarantee is issued by Siemens plc, Siemens House, Oldbury, Bracknell, Berkshire, RG12 8FZ. u Any other claims resulting out of or in connection with the device shall be excluded from this Guarantee. 22 Guarantee certificate (Ireland) Scope u This equipment guarantee applies to end users ("customers"). This guarantee does not in any way affect the customer's statutory rights. u The guarantee applies to the supplied devices and all their components but not to their installation or configuration or to the services provided by the dealer. Manuals and any software supplied on a separate data medium are excluded from the guarantee. This guarantee does not apply to decorative covers or any other personalised parts or software not included in the scope of supply. The guarantee also does not apply to decorative top or bottom shells for special editions. u The guarantee provides for devices or components that, despite proper care and use, have demonstrably developed defects due to faulty workmanship and/or faulty materials to be replaced or repaired at our discretion free of charge. The guarantee does not cover normal wear and tear. Alternatively, we reserve the right to replace the defective device with a successor model or reimburse the original purchase price on return of the defective device. Our decision is final. Any legal claims are excluded. u Claims under the guarantee cannot be made if the defect or damage was caused by improper care or use. Improper care or use includes the following: Opening the device (this is classed as third-party intervention) Manipulating components on the printed circuit board Manipulating the software Defects or damage caused by dropping, breaking, lightning or ingress of moisture. This also applies if defects or damage were caused by mechanical, chemical, radio interference or thermal factors (e.g. microwave, sauna, etc.). Repairs or other work done by persons not authorised by us. Devices fitted with accessories not authorised by Siemens. u Any further claims due to damage are excluded, such as damage arising outside the device, provided this was not due to gross negligence and/or intent on our part. u Claims under the guarantee must be made as soon as the defect is noticed. u A till receipt showing the date of purchase must be presented as proof. Each claim under the guarantee is accepted with the express reservation that subsequent investigations confirm the validity of the claim. u Any devices or components that are replaced become our property. u The costs of materials and labour will be borne by us, but not the costs of transport, postage or freight. u We are entitled, at our discretion, to make technical changes (such as firmware updates) beyond repair or replacement in order to upgrade the device to the latest state of the art. There is no additional charge to the customer for this work. Our decision is final. Any legal claims are excluded. u The guarantee is valid in the country of purchase. It applies only if the device is operated in the relevant geographical area in accordance with the information on the packaging and in the operating instructions. u Any further claims are excluded. Siemens is not liable in any circumstances for downtime, loss of profits, loss of data or loss of any other information. The customer alone is responsible for safeguarding such data and information. u Changes to this guarantee require prior approval by Siemens in writing. 21
23 Guarantee period u The guarantee applies in countries in the EU from 1 January 2002 for a period of 24 months. u In all other countries the guarantee period shall be the relevant minimum statutory guarantee period, but no longer than 24 months. u The guarantee period starts on the day of purchase by the customer. u A successful claim under the guarantee does not extend the guarantee period. u Work under the guarantee is handled by our Customer Care Centres. 22
