1 FACILITATING COMMUNICATION BETWEEN PANTRY UNIT AND BOGIE s ONBOARD HIGH SPEED LONG ROUTE TRAINS Abhishek Bondarde 1, Rohan Patil 1, Mrs. A. B. The main aim of the project is to design a system to update presently used pantry system using memory devices and wireless communication. The system which is currently being used involves manually placing of orders which is time consuming and might lead to misplacements. To overcome these drawbacks and to make this process automated one, we have developed a wireless communication system to take the menu from each bogie and directly transmit it to the pantry section. When you want to place an order from bogie just use our system. Keypad is used to take order from the user. When user completes the order, he/she will press the order complete key. Order will be sent wirelessly to the counter. At the counter, admin person will send time to serve and bill of the food ordered back to the user. We are also interfacing thermal printers to print the bill of the food ordered for confirmation purpose. For illiterate people, we have added audio facility. When any key is pressed then audio file corresponding to that key will be played. The conclusion drawn from this work will be used as guidelines for the future implementation of autonomous communication platforms for high-speed rail connectivity. 1. INTRODUCTION Railway pantry system currently being used involves manually placing of orders. A man from pantry section takes orders from every berth (or passenger), this process is time consuming and might lead to misplacement of orders. There is a fix time duration within which that person comes and takes orders. Once we miss that time duration or if we need to place a new order, we personally have to go to the pantry section and place our order. Due to human intervention, misplacements are likely to take place. To overcome these problems and to avoid errors due to human intervention we introduce advanced railway pantry system. Railway wireless communication network demands good system coverage and high transmission rate. To meet these requirements, in the railway pantry car management system, we propose a reliable wireless communication using zig-bee between pantry unit and bogie s on high speed long route trains [1]. This system has already been implemented in some hotels. Using this system one can place his/her order easily. But this system is not widely accepted as it can serve only limited number of people. Moreover, only one user can place his order at a time. This system is static in nature. A more advanced system than this one can be used in a dynamic environment which can be user-friendly and can handle more number of users at a time. 2. METHODOLOGY The overall project can be divided into two separate unitsa) Pantry unit b) Bogie unit 2.1Hardware: Hardware of our project consists of following small modules as shown in figure 1 and figure Bogie unit- Volume 2, Issue 2, February 2014 Page 8
2 The front panel of our system consists of audio amplifier, touch screen module and various other modules. To facilitate communication between all these modules we have used LPC 2138 controller. We preferred LPC2138 for bogie unit as it best suitable controller to play audio files. We have added this audio facility to make it more user-friendly. Fig.1. Block Diagram of the Bogie unit Pantry Unit- In this system, we have integrated various modules to implement pantry unit. In pantry car management system the concept of hierarchical transmission can be used [2]. The incoming data is separated according to their importance and then transmitted in different ways. Due to differentiation on service type and statistical properties between general mobile communication case and railway communication case, above mentioned methods are not appropriate for railway case. That is hierarchical transmission is not beneficial because in our system all data (order) which is to be sent to pantry car is important that is bogie number, berth number, quantity, food-token number, etc. Fig.2. Block Diagram of the Pantry unit 2.1.3Block Diagram Explanation The components were selected as per the market survey for both the modules. A selection criterion for some of the major components is discussed below- The job of microcontroller is to facilitate the communication between all the modules. So we preferred a simple microcontroller (AT89c51). Table no. 1. Selection of microcontroller Parameter ARM-7 (LPC2138) PIC 8051 (AT89c51) Multi-tasking X X Inbuilt DAC X Inbuilt ADC X Serial ports To display total number of orders to be served, a small LCD is required. For displaying purposes we have used 16x2 LCD. The admin person is alerted by a buzzer, to rest the buzzer a master-key is used. Delivery of data (order) to destination is to be done in a more reliable way so as to overcome deep fading effect, communication errors and to extend the coverage so that blind areas can be overlaid. Therefore, there is need of direct link between pantry unit and bogies with help of zig-bee pro module. Table no. 2. Selection of wireless comm. Device Parameter Zig-bee PRO Bluetooth IR sensor Volume 2, Issue 2, February 2014 Page 9
3 Range 1.5km 10m Few miters. Efficiency High Low Lowest Data rate More Moderate Low Table no. 3. Selection of printer Parameter Thermal printer Inkjet printer Fast printing X Software required X (drivers) Buffer size Less More Cost Low High Thermal printer is used to print the order placed by the customer or passenger in the train. Thermal printer prints faster than any other printers and has sufficient buffer size to print the characters at one time [5]. Fig 1 shows intercommunication between all the blocks and the microcontroller AT89c51. As we have to interface thermal printer as well as zig-bee to the microcontroller, we make use of a switching IC (hef-4052) which switches between thermal printer and zig-bee. As soon as the new order is received by the pantry section, buzzer will alert the admin person about the order received and admin person resets the buzzer by making master-key high. The master key is nothing but single key which is situated at the counter side. Acknowledgement is sent to bogie section and print is generated at both sides that is one for user and other for pantry section and overall order required for all the passengers is displayed on LCD which is located in pantry car. 2.2 SOFTWARE: For designing and drawing of circuit diagram we used ORCAD. For assembly level language programming we used KEIL version 3. The most important part is simulation of system, working of circuit diagram and programming. We did simulation with the help of PROTEUS. For designing of PCB layout, according to circuit diagram, we used EAGLE and PROTEL. Advantage of using EAGLE is that while preparing circuit diagram PCB, layout is generated automatically according to the circuit. But while preparing PCB, layout is generated only when this layout is in specified size or format. If PCB size is bigger than specified size then, it can t generate PCB layout. So, we preferred PROTEL for designing of PCB layout. Programming of this unit was done according to flowchart as shown in fig 3- As soon as the power is applied to the system, lcd and zig-bee are initialized. The microcontroller checks whether data is received or not. If not it enters into idle mode otherwise it sends the received data to the thermal printer for printing purpose. The received data is displayed on lcd. Volume 2, Issue 2, February 2014 Page 10
4 Fig 3. Flowchart of Pantry unit To test the flowchart we transmitted data from a PC and received using a zig-bee receiver, Shown in figure number 3&4. The received data is then printed by a thermal printer which is connected to microcontroller. The lcd in the pantry car displays the received data. Fig 4. Flowchart of Bogie unit 3. RESULT Result of this system comprises of two parts- simulation and actual software. We performed simulation part to check the program algorithm according to hardware connections. After simulation of Assembly language program, hardware for the system was made. Program was burned using Keil software. Data to the microcontroller was sent through PC(port 1). Depending on the order, data gets displayed on the LCD. Admin person is alerted about the new oreded by a buzzer. The buzzer is reset using a master key. Order gets printed with the help of thermal printer as shown in fig. 4 and fig. 5 respectively. After correcting all simulation part we done with the hardware of pantry unit, for checking that we made one arrangement that we 1 st sent data to this unit from pc and observing data transmission is reliable or not. 6 Fig.8.Thermal Printer 4. CONCLUSION Prototype of the system is working satisfactorily up to 1km of range. Cheapest microcontroller AT89c51 is selected for bogie unit for its cost effectiveness and limited processing capability. ARM-7 microcontroller is selected for pantry system to handle multiple data coming from different bogie units. Zig-bee device is selected due to its range upto certain kms. 5. DISCUSSION This paper provides alternative approach for current human operated pantry system used in India. It gives solution of enlarging the system coverage and reliability of wireless communication in railway pantry car management system. The system is portable and can be implemented in a static as well as dynamic environment. It also reduces the labour requirement. As we are using wireless devices, there is no need of cables; there is no clutter during the setup & installation of this system. Hence, increases user satisfaction. Practicle implementation of the system in running train is still to be done.
