1 ISSN: X AUTOMATIC WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM USING ARM CONTROLLER N.B.Bhawarkar 1, N.M. Verulkar 2, R.R. Ambalkar 3, K.U. Pathak 4 1,2,3,4 Asst.Professor Department of Electronics & Tele-comm, Amravati University, MGICOET Shegaon, India Abstract : With the fast growth in technology, automation in each field is playing a vital role. Thus with the growth in urban residential areas, to provide ease to human beings and considering scarcity of water due to wastage and water theft, an automatic water distribution system using ATSAM3XE ARM controller is discussed in this paper. The system consists of the GSM module to track the extraction of water using high power motor sensed by flow sensor. The supply gets disconnected using Relay and ULN2003 to drive it, if the flow sensed is higher than the predefined value. The system is very efficient to eradicate the water theft and provide limited water supply to each house in the locality. Thus the proposed system will help to conserve our natural resource i.e. water. Keywords - ATSAM3XE, ARM, YF-S201, G1/180, ULN2003, GSM SIM900A, 16*2 LCD, ARDUINO 1. INTRODUCTION Natural resources play a vital role in day today life. Water is one of the significant natural resource which was abundantly available before. But now-a-days due to extra intervention of mankind water scarcity is the obstacle in the development of our country. Water scarcity is mainly due ARM controller. This ARM controller is interfaced with flow sensor YF-S201, GSM module SIM 900A and solenoid valve through relay which works with the use of ULN2003. The controller is also interfaced with the memory card for the billing purpose and also to keep the data records. 16*2 LCD is also interfaced for displaying the related messages. to the wastage of water domestically. Thus considering this issue, the system is provided with automatic water distribution. The system basically deals with the automation in water distribution system using ATSAM3XE ARM controller [1]. Water supply systems are the crucial part of urban infrastructure; therefore system must assure the continuity of the water distribution and control of technological parameter. Appropriate flow rate and pressure are necessary for effective use. Best policy to save water is to use it properly. For all domestic, agricultural, industrial areas there is excessive need of water therefore people try to extract the water from main street pipeline with the help of motor to their drain point. In order to eradicate this Water Theft there must be provision to check the flow rate [2]. To supply the water equally to each house and to stop the water theft various technologies have been invented using embedded system. It has the limitations in performance and monitoring. To overcome the above limitations this paper provides a system using ATSAM3XE ARM interfaced with the GSM module is. The basic idea to select this system is to make a special and outstanding product which would be easily and effortlessly implemented in the society and also be very useful for the society [3]. 2. PROPOSED SYSTEM The system introduced in this is capable to solve the problem of water scarcity and wastage due to extra extraction and over consumption. The fig.1 consists of the block diagram which shows the complete system designed for automatic water distribution system using ATSAM3XE Fig.1 Block diagram of proposed system 2.1 ATSAM3XE ARM controller ATSAM is nothing but a flash microcontroller. It has high performance 32 bit ARM, having RISK architecture. The operating frequency of it is 84 MHz with 512 Kbytes and 100 Bytes of SRAM. Controller is shown in fig.2.1. The peripheral of ARM is high speed USB host and device. ARM is operated on 3.5 V with nine inbuilt 32 bit timers and counters and also each pin act as interrupt in controller. In the proposed system shown if fig.1 firstly the output of flow sensor in the form of pulses is given as an input to the ATSAM3XE ARM controller. Controller accepts the input and decides whether to keep system ON/OFF using solenoid valve, according to the input of flow sensor. Volume: 03 Issue:

2 ISSN: X 2.2 FLOW SENSOR Fig.2.1 ATSAM3XE ARM controller Flow sensor YF-S201 shown in fig.2.2 is used to measure the amount of water flowing through the pipeline. Flow sensor also measures the flow rate of water. Flow sensor consists of encoder, which gives the output in the form of pulses to the ATSAM3XE ARM controller. And according to that input ATSAM3XE ARM controller controls the solenoid valve. If the flow rate is higher than the predefined value then it closes the solenoid valve [4]. operated through the relay and requires 230V AC power supply [5]. 2.4 RELAY Relay is the device which allows a low power circuit to switch relatively high current ON or OFF or to control signals that must be electrically isolated from the controlling circuit itself. In the proposed system controller controls the solenoid valve through Relay which is shown in fig.2.4. According to the input of ATSAM3XE ARM controller the relay is operated. When a flow rate is below the predefined value then the relay is at normally open condition. When the flow rate sensed by the flow sensor is high it gives input to the ATSAM3XE ARM controller and then the controller gives input to the relay through driver IC ULN2003. Then relay switches to normally close condition which results into the closing of solenoid valve. 2.5 ULN2003 Fig2.4 Relay ULN2003 is a driver IC used to drive the relay is shown in fig.2.5. ULN2003 mainly consist of transistor in common emitter configuration. Relay is interfaced with the ATSAM3XE ARM controller through this IC. Fig.2.2Flow Sensor 2.3 LIQUID SOLENOID VALVE Fig2.3 Liquid Solenoid Valve Liquid solenoid valve G1/180 is the controlling unit of system is shown in fig.2.3. Water supply is controlled by the solenoid valve. According to the input of flow sensor the solenoid valve works. This liquid solenoid valve is 2.6 GSM MODEM Fig2.5 ULN2003 In this system we are using GSM SIM900A modem for the purpose of communication which is shown in fig2.6. GSM modem is interfaced with the ATSAM3XE ARM controller. It is used to message the different status of the system. According to the input of the flow sensor, A Volume: 03 Issue:

3 ATSAM3XE ARM controller sends the message to the responsible unit using GSM.A message of high flow rate and water limit reached is send through the GSM. ISSN: X 2.7 MEMORY CARD Fig2.6 GSM MODEM Memory card is interfaced with the ATSAM3XE ARM microcontroller. The memory card slot is shown in fig.2.7. It is used to store the data. So, it can be used for billing purpose. Monthly data can be received from the memory card and then can be provided to the user or consumer. 2.8 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY (LCD) A 16*2 LCD with black text on green background is interfaced with the ATSAM3XE ARM microcontroller. A 16*2 LCD which is interfaced with the controller is shown in fig.2.8. It is used to display the status of system. Messages like LIMIT REACHED and HIGH FLOW RATE are displayed on the LCD. 2.9 POWER SUPPLY Fig2.8.Liquid crystal display A 12V power supply is provided to the ATSAM3XE ARM microcontroller through the step down. And a 230V supply is directly given to the Liquid Solenoid Valve. ATSAM3XE ARM microcontroller works on 3.3V supply. Power supply is provided with the help of circuit shown in fig ARDUINO SOFTWARE Fig2.9. Power Supply ARDUINO is a platform of microcontroller interfacing and programming. ARDUINO manufactures on very small scale designing. Main feature of ARDUINO is that, any microcontroller can fixed in ARDUINO kit also every microcontroller can arrange similar language(c language) coding by ARDUINO. The programming for ATSAM3XE ARM microcontroller is also done using embedded C. There is a large and growing international demand for programmer with embedded skills, and many desktop developers are starting to move into this important area. Hence using this programming we have interface flow sensor, solenoid valve, LCD, GSM, Memory card. 3. PROGRAMMING FLOW The proposed programming flow for the above system is shown in fig.10. Firstly we are initializing all the I/O ports of microcontroller used for interfacing the devices. After that we initialize the LCD & GSM modem. The microcontroller will check the output of flow sensor. It will check whether the flow rate is higher than the predefined value of flow rate. If YES, it will OFF the solenoid valve for 5sec and will display a message of HIGH FLOW RATE on LCD followed by sending a message through GSM to the concerned authority. Again it will check for the same condition till the flow rate is not found to be less than predefined value. After that it will check whether the water limit reached or not. And when water limit reached it will OFF the solenoid valve for 5 sec and will send the message through the GSM and also will display a message of LIMIT REACHED on LCD [6]. 4. RESULT Overall view of the project Automated Water Distribution using ARM-7 is as shown in fig.4.1 It shows the activated system with initial condition of Flow rate = 0 and water = 0 on the LCD screen. When the flow rate increases above 500 pulse count by the flow sensor, the system become STOP showing the result High Flow Rate on the LCD as given in fig.4.2 and message send to the mobile is shown in fig4.3 Volume: 03 Issue:

Here we have used a limit of 1 liter for this project and the result is as shown in fig.4.4 Fig.4.1 Overall view of Automated water distribution using ARM Controller. CONCLUSION The development of the system has the significant objective of saving our natural resource that is water. The next two objectives are no manual intervention due to automation, thus reduction in the manpower. And the second one is to eradicate water theft and thus wastage. Introduction of this system can bring a wide transformation in our locality, if implemented using ATSAM3XE ARM controller. The best part of the system is its ease of designing and the hardware is easily available at cheaper rate. The use of GSM module has resulted into the prompt system which attentively gives the status of the system time-to-time. The memory card interfaced with the controller enables the exact billing facility as it keeps the record over the monthly usage. The total above said facilities are established only due to the use of flow sensor and solenoid valve. As they control the flow of water over a concern limit and a particular rate or else it forcibly switches the system OFF. The ATSAM3XE ARM is compatible and easy to interface with the certain used hardware. Thus we have designed ATSAM3XE ARM controller based automatic water distribution system with GSM module using relay, flow sensor, solenoid valves, memory card and LCD to achieve the above said objectives.
