1 Short introduction on how to use The Godfather Foreword I have been using TGF for some years now. At the beginning it was by trial and error. But it soon turned out be the best tagging tool I have ever used! After browsing the forum I saw somebody asked for a tutorial and I want to contribute something by writing one. Though, it only covers the basic functions. I never needed more so far. Basic principle The principle how TGF works is: 1) Scan files / folder, 2) change, 3) apply, 4) do (update / rename) 1) That means that first you choose a folder and scan it to show the information of your files in TGF main window (that is if you dont use Auto scan). 2) Second you change the tag infos as you like. Until now, now real changes have been made to your files. 3) Third you apply your changes. This works like a preview. So still no changes to your files have been made. 4) If you than like what you did, you do really update the tags or rename the files. by tmf 1 / 8

2 1) Choose a folder and scan Short introduction on how to use TGF Chosing the folder where your files are stored isnt such a big deal. So not much explication is needed. I just want to point out a few things which I really like. a) Chose your preferred file format if you have different file types in a folder eg mp3, ogg, mp4, b) Define a favorite folder where TGF always starts when opened. Eg you have a folder where you store your mp3 when digitizing you CD collection c) Make TGF always scan subfolders or only scan the folder you are actually in. d) Switch Auto scan on / off. I prefer to have it off as I have a netbook and with large folders a wrong click can take time. e) Use the file mask to filter for certain files. Eg type James and only the files in the folder with James anywhere in the filename will be shown in the main window when you scan. 2) Change tag infos I usually change the tag infos using the very potent batch tag tool at the bottom of TGF. The main options I use are a) Change Album, Artist, Year and Genre at the same time. b) Use information from the file name to update a tag field c) Switch info form different tag field because they are in the wrong field d) use skip to omit some files a) Enter the info you need eg Album = Just to show how it works. Click apply and see how it changes your tag field. But remember thats only a preview. You would need to click update to actually realize the changes. by tmf 2 / 8

3 b) Simple right click on a field and chose eg File and the Token you need. A Token is a part of the Filename. Usually files are separated by - so Token 1 = first part of filename before the first -. And so on. This comes handy if eg your files are named Artist Album No Title. c) If eg Artist and Album info are in wrong tag fields. You right click and chose the other tag by tmf 3 / 8

4 field. d) A very useful option is to use skip option. Click the files you want no changes to be made to. You can inverse your selection with a right click. I like that function because for some reason I always have some files that are correct but others need a update. Please be aware, when you do scan all boxes are emptied. by tmf 4 / 8

5 3) Apply changes You use this button to update tags or rename files. Now the info you entered will be applied to the files as a preview. No real chages have been made so far. by tmf 5 / 8

6 4) Update / rename Short introduction on how to use TGF If you are sure you want the changes to be actually made to your files, click update. Or in the case of renaming your files click rename. A few more helpful things Use favorites to rename files eg complete Albums with Artist Title or Soundtracks with Album Track no Artist Title (options) Play with options to influence how TGF is replacing case formatting by tmf 6 / 8

7 Change the colors of the UI. The predefined colors may seem a bit unclear to what they mean. In options you can change them. by tmf 7 / 8
