Product Support SynchronEyes Version 4.0 FAQs NOTE: SynchronEyes software version 4.0 only runs on the Microsoft Windows operating system. How can I register my SynchronEyes software? To register online, visit Installation Questions How do I install SynchronEyes software on teacher and student computers? Start by installing teacher-station software. Then install the student software. When you do this, you can configure SynchronEyes software so the interface is visible or hidden. The SynchronEyes User Guide includes comprehensive installation instructions. When you install SynchronEyes student-station software, you can either accept the default settings or configure the student options. The default settings include: a visible student interface the Student Configuration Wizard (so you can change any option after installation) the ability for students to browse for and connect to the teacher the designation of the student name as the currently active user account for the computer If you configure the student options, you can: set the student software to run in visible or hidden mode have a student automatically connect to the same Teacher ID on software startup set the student station name (e.g., default machine name, currently active user account, a name the student chooses or a name you choose) designate the default directory for files transferred from the teacher. Make sure your students have permission to access the folder you specify here. To install SynchronEyes student-station software, insert the SynchronEyes software CD-ROM into the CD- ROM drive of the student computer. Navigate to the SynchronEyes Student directory and double-click SynchronEyesClient.exe. NOTE: To configure the other student computers identically to the first computer, copy the SynchronEyesClient.ini file in the SynchronEyes Student folder of the first computer the software, and paste it into the same folder on other student computers. Do I need to know the IP address of my computer to connect to SynchronEyes? No. Students will connect to a specific teacher ID, versus a specific IP address. Can I configure the student computer to connect to my computer automatically? Yes, when you install the student-station software, select Connect to the same teacher automatically every time in the Connection Style dialog box. Click the Next button and enter a teacher ID, or select This hostname or IP address and enter a hostname or IP address in the Automatic Connection dialog box. NOTE: If you haven t started your teacher-station software, the student-station software continues to make connection attempts until it is successful or the connection information is changed.

How do I upgrade the student-station software? SynchronEyes teacher-station software has an automatic upgrade option. With this option selected, you automatically upgrade the teacher-station software. SynchronEyes software automatically upgrades the student-station software the next time the student connects. Select Options > Automatically Upgrade Students. The student program is freezing on log-out. Is there a fix for this? Yes. This is a known issue in version 4.0. If you are experiencing delays when logging off the student program, you can install a patch to fix this. To install this patch: 1. Open the teacher-station software and click Help > Check for SynchronEyes Updates. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions. The upgrade will be applied automatically. 3. Ensure the student computers are logged in as administrators. Connect students to the teacher computer you just updated and automatically update the students. Windows Explorer launches every time a student logs in. Is there a way to stop this? Yes. This will only occur if you have both SynchronEyes software versions 3.x and 4.x installed on the same machine. Simply uninstall one of the versions and the problem will disappear. Is a version of SynchronEyes software available for Macintosh computers? Yes. Version 2.0 is available for Macintosh OS 8 through 9.x. Version 2.0 does not support Chat, Vote, File Transfer or Quiz features. Feature Questions How do I identify myself? SynchronEyes software uses a unique teacher ID to identify you. You can create a new Teacher ID at any time and as many as you require. For example, you could create a Teacher ID for each class that you teach. With each Teacher ID, SynchronEyes software stores a unique profile of settings, student groups and stored quizzes. What methods of communication are available? With SynchronEyes software you can communicate using a variety of methods Send messages to a group of students or to the entire class using the Chat feature Poll a group or the entire class by asking students to vote on a yes/no question. SynchronEyes software automatically tallies the results as they come in. Respond to questions posed using the Chat feature. You can reply to each student individually, or you can select multiple students and reply to them as a group. You can broadcast your desktop or that of a student to an individual, a group or the entire class Annotate over a broadcast desktop using your SMART Board interactive whiteboard. If you re working at your computer or if you don t have a connected SMART Board interactive whiteboard, annotate using the pen tool. Evaluate your students by creating and sending electronic quizzes Lock students out of their computers. This action instantly prevents students from using their machines, so their attention is focused on you. What s an electronic quiz? SynchronEyes teacher-station software includes a Quiz Editor program that you can use to create a quiz with multiple-choice, matching, ordering, short answer and essay questions. In conjunction with SynchronEyes teacher-station software, you can save, revise or send these quizzes to an entire class or to a select group of students. SynchronEyes software automatically marks the multiple choice, matching and ordering questions, as well as selected short answer questions. All quiz questions are stored, and a summary file is automatically created. How do I collect student quizzes?

Asking students to finish and submit a quiz to you by a certain time doesn t always work because some students will always keep working beyond the deadline. To instantly collect the quizzes, click the Collect button in the Quiz view. SynchronEyes software sends all unsubmitted quizzes to the response folder. Where are the quiz files transferred? By default the submitted quiz files are stored in the same directory as the quiz file. So, if you conducted a quiz from C:\MyDocuments\TimmyB\Quiz1.sqz, the answers would be stored in C:\MyDocuments\TimmyB\ResponsesforQuiz1.sqz on September 3, :53 AM. However, you can easily alter the default to any folder of your choice. To do this, select Preferences from the Options menu. The Preference Settings dialog box appears. Click the File Transfer tab. Click Custom Folder and the Browse button to select another location. How do I broadcast a desktop? Broadcast your desktop by selecting a Group tab or the All Students tab, and then clicking the Broadcast button. To broadcast a student desktop, double-click that student s thumbnail. When the student s desktop image fills your screen, click the Broadcast button. Hardware Questions Should my network use TCP/IP protocol? Yes, SynchronEyes software requires a network running TCP/IP. Additional network hardware is usually not required. What are the technical requirements for SynchronEyes software? Teacher Station Personal computer with a 233 MHz Intel Pentium II processor (faster processor recommended) and 64 MB of RAM (128 MB recommended) Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP or Windows NT 4.0 operating system 15 MB of free hard disk space for a complete installation Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later 10 Mbps TCP/IP network (sub net recommended) VGA Display with 256 colors Student Station Personal computer with a 133 MHz Intel Pentium processor (233+ MHz Intel Pentium II processor recommended) and 32 MB of RAM (64 MB recommended) Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP or Windows NT 4.0 operating system 5 MB of free hard disk space for complete installation Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later VGA Display with 256 colors What are the optimal settings for SynchronEyes software? SynchronEyes software works best when the teacher-stations and student-stations are set to the same screen resolution and color depth. Refer to the chart below for the recommended settings. Settings outside the acceptable range are not supported. Color Depth/Screen Resolution 256 Color (8-bit) High Color (16-bit) True Color (24-bit) True Color (32-bit) 640 x 480 optimal optimal acceptable acceptable 800 x 600 optimal optimal acceptable acceptable 1024 x 768 optimal optimal acceptable acceptable 1152 x 864 optimal acceptable acceptable not recommended

1280 x 1024 optimal acceptable not recommended not recommended 1600 x 1200 optimal not recommended not recommended not recommended How many students can connect to the teacher-station? Use the following chart to determine the maximum number of student computers that can be connected with SynchronEyes software. You must know the type of computers that your students will use, and the speed of your network. Network/Student Computers 10 MB Network 100 MB Network Pentium 133+ MHz Up to 10 students Up to 10 students Pentium II 233+ MHz Up to 40 students Up to 80 students Does SynchronEyes software work over distances? SynchronEyes software is designed for use over a Local Area Network (LAN). It is possible to use the software over a Wide Area Network (WAN), provided you have at least a 10 Mbps TCP/IP network and TCP multicasting is supported on your network. Does SynchronEyes software work on a wireless network? Yes, provided the network protocol is TCP/IP. Keep in mind that the recommended network speeds are 10 MB and 100 MB. How much load will SynchronEyes software place on my network? SynchronEyes software puts virtually no load on your network, so aside from initial bursts of data the network speed remains the same. The following table lists the network load specifications. The network load column indicates the normal amount of network capacity used. The burst column indicates the amount of network capacity used during the initial request to share information from a teacher station to a student station and vice versa. Network Load (%) Burst Load % (Time Sustained) Class View Near 0% 0% Student to Teacher <1% 82% (<1 sec) Teacher Show <1% 3% (4 sec) Teacher Showing Student <1% 83% (5 sec) What support is available? For further assistance contact Technical Support support@smarttech.com Telephone: (Canada/U.S.) (All other countries) Does SynchronEyes software work on a teacher-station with dual monitors? Yes. However, you can only watch the primary monitor, and can only show the display of the primary monitor to the class. Students must switch between two different teacher-station connections. Is it possible to accommodate the second teacher connection without installing an additional version of SynchronEyes student-station software on each student s desktop? Students can change which Teacher ID they are connected to, provided both teachers allow the students to disconnect. To connect to a different teacher ID, each student must double-click the SynchronEyes icon, click the Connect button, and then select a new Teacher ID.

If the SynchronEyes software interface is hidden on the student-stations, you must change the connection settings. To do that read the instructions in the online Help file or in the SynchronEyes User s Guide. Student Questions I can t connect to my teacher s computer, and the icon in my system tray has changed to. What s wrong? You opened SynchronEyes software before your teacher, or you tried to connect to the wrong Teacher ID. (When it starts, SynchronEyes student-station software will try to connect to the most recently used Teacher ID). Check which Teacher ID you re connecting to, and then connect manually using the Connect to Teacher dialog box. My teacher has told me to reduce the colors on my display. What does this mean? Your computer has a higher color setting than your teacher s, so you must change your display settings. The method of doing this varies with each operating system. Check the online Help file for specific instructions. How do I change my logon name? Your logon name identifies you to the teacher. If your teacher enables this option, you can change this identifier by double-clicking the SynchronEyes icon, and clicking the Connect button. Revise the entry in Your name box, and click the Connect button. How do I change which teacher I m connected to? You can connect to a different teacher by double-clicking the SynchronEyes icon, and clicking Connect. Select a new Teacher ID from the list, and click the Connect button. If you can t access the Teacher ID list, your teacher has disabled that option. In this case, you can t connect to a different teacher. I just completed a quiz. Where can I see the results? SynchronEyes software creates a summary of quiz results, which shows your mark and the class average. Your teacher can move this file so students do not have access to each other s grades. Ask your teacher for the location of your marked, read-only quiz and the HTML (.htm) quiz summary. Can I change my quiz after I submit it to the teacher? No. Once you click the Submit button, your HTML (.htm) file becomes read-only. Why is the text-entry box of the student Chat dialog box sometimes unavailable? Your teacher controls the Chat feature. If this feature is enabled, you can access the text-entry. However, if your teacher has disabled the Chat feature, you can t enter text. Nevertheless, your teacher can still send Chat messages, which you can read.
