1 21a Errington St PLYMPTON SA 5038 PH: (08) Fax: (08) nd December 2016 Dear Parents and Caregivers, In 2017 Plympton International College is introducing Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) for Years This means that students in discussed year levels will be able to bring their own computer/tablet (device) to school, that meets the requirements of the hardware and software specifications recommended for the BYOD. Students who do not choose to bring their own device (BYOD) will be provided with a school borrowed computer and user agreement. This new arrangement provides families with greater choice about the type of device they purchase and the frequency with which they replace it. Thanks to some prudent investment in our communications infrastructure Plympton International College students and staff are able to operate effectively with either Apple or Windows based products and some use a combination of both. To assist you with your decision, attached is a brief summary of both our own and broader research findings into the important role that technology plays in learning. In order to support families when purchasing a device for BYOD we have also enclosed some detailed information about the devices required by students in Our aim in providing you with the following information is to offer the maximum choice and flexibility while also providing a high level of support. If you have any questions or would like to speak to one of our staff about the BYOD program please do not hesitate to call our reception or your questions and comments directly to the following people. Please sign and return the student agreement form to the home group teacher indicating whether you will BYOD or continue to use school owned devices. Questions about the BYOD, technical specifications of an existing device or compatibility issues can be forwarded to the ICT department: dl.0907.ictadmin@schools.sa.edu.au Thank you in anticipation of your support as we prepare for Yours sincerely Linda Richardson Principal
2 BYOD: Rationale Digital technology is embedded in our society and as such the focus of technologies in teaching and learning has shifted from whether or not to use them, to understanding which technologies can be used and how they can best be applied in a range of educational contexts. The results of the Plympton International College Bilingual projects the use of digital technology in education and demonstrates that the use of personal digital devices will: Support and enable successful independent learning. Allow for students to collaborate with peers and teachers using media rich technologies. Engage students in a personal and differentiated learning journey. Provide Anywhere, Anytime learning. Encourage critical thinking and problem-solving while enabling students to develop their creativity. Organise learning and school activities on mobile devices that can be synchronised on all their devices. Educational Activities Student devices will be used to access resources, complete assignments, and for personal organization. Educational activities may include researching information, producing documents, analysing data, participating in surveys, producing videos, reading e-books, creating blogs, taking notes, or scheduling events. Digital Citizenship A focus of this initiative is digital citizenship, which is the responsible use of technology. Your child will continue to learn digital skills, ethics, etiquette, and online safety. These are important aspects of participating in today s world. Safe and Secure To maintain a safe and secure learning environment, a filtered Internet connection is provided for students. They will not be permitted to use a personal broadband connection such as a 3G/4G phone network. Responsibility Students are solely responsible for their device. They must bring it fully charged to school. Similar to other personally owned items, Plympton International College is not liable for loss, damage, misuse, or theft. Technical Support Resources will be provided to help students connect their device to the school network. Your child must be familiar with how to use their device. Teachers will incorporate the use of your child s device into learning. However, they will not provide technical support.
3 BYOD: Year Levels Requirements : Years 7 to 12: Students are encouraged to BYOD and have access to a laptop or tablet, specifications listed in the table below. Students who do not choose to bring their own device (BYOD) will be provided with a school borrowed computer and user agreement. What is best for student learning, a laptop or a tablet? There is no right answer to this question but rather a preferable choice for meeting specific needs. Both laptops and tablets offer extremely convenient and powerful features. Choosing the best option for a particular user is essential. Parents are encouraged to speak with their child and choose a device that best meets their individual needs. Why Laptops for Years 7 to 12? Laptops perform all the tasks available on a desktop but in a mobile, compact device. The large screen allows students to engage in extensive research. The full keyboard means a faster rate of typing can be achieved, with many laptop/tablet hybrids offering both a touchscreen keyboard in addition to the full keyboard, offering maximum flexibility. Increased data storage The ability to work with a wide variety of accessories and plug-ins. The functionality of software applications and the processing power of the laptop allows for the creation and presentation of more detailed work. The CORE mobile device is a minimum requirement. Consistent with the Acceptable Use of Information Communication Technology Policy, students will also have opportunities to use other personal digital devices to supports their diverse learning styles.
