1 Bring Your Own Salesian College Rupertswood The College has invested significantly in ICT infrastructure and processes to ensure our students are at the cutting edge of contemporary learning technology. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) enables students to bring a learning device to school each day that will best assist their learning. The focus is on empowering students to take ownership of their learning and vlearn (Virtual Learning) enables this by giving all students access to the applications and resources they need 24/7. We aim to compliment face-to-face learning opportunities with the ability to stay connected beyond the classroom anywhere, anytime. BYOD and vlearn Guidelines Background 1:1 Year 9 ipads From Salesian College committed to a 1:1 ipad program starting at Year 9 in order to move towards a more contemporary teaching and learning experienced enhanced by technology. While the ipad devices played a major role in connecting classrooms to the internet and the capabilities of apps, the College has decided that it is time to move to a 1:1 device environment throughout the school. Rather than expanding on the existing ipad program we decided to introduce a Bring Your Own Device program to give families some more flexibility in choosing a device that will best suit their child s learning. Evolution to 1:1 BYOD Program BYOD refers to each student in Years 7-12 bringing a personally owned and fully charged learning device to school each day. The device must be a Windows or Apple Mac device as outlined in this document. The BYOD program underpinned by vlearn will enable students to access online teaching resources at school and at home including but not limited to: vlearn (Virtual Learning) Office 365 Learning Portal Daymap and Stile All students and parents/guardians are required to sign the Responsible Digital Citizen Agreement Students & Parents in order for a student to take part in the BYOD program. Equity with vlearn The approved devices listed under the recommended devices vary in their speed, size and capacity. By using a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure the College can provide a consistent platform for access to learning applications and performance speed without having to mandate that every student has the exact same device. Types of Devices The types of recommended devices that are recommended for BYOD are Apple MacBook laptops, Lenovo laptops and Apple ipads with Bluetooth keyboards. Mobile phones, android devices, Chromebooks or any other types of tablets are not approved devices. Salesian College Rupertswood Community Learning Excellence Faith 1

2 Internet Access Whilst on College grounds it is expected that students will only access the internet via the College network connections. The use of mobile phones and hotspot is not permitted. Digital Citizenship In moving to BYOD the College will continue to uphold all expectations as outlined in the Responsible Digital Citizen Agreement Students & Parents. This includes ethical behaviours, student responsibilities, teacher responsibilities, parent/guardian responsibilities and school responsibilities which all relate to the College BYOD program. Device Security Security of BYOD is the responsibility of parents and students. Student devices should have up-to-date antivirus software installed. It is advisable for parents to investigate insuring their child s BYOD device. The College will not take any responsibility for loss, damage or theft of BYOD devices. It is also advisable to purchase a protective bag for the BYOD device. Free Windows Virus Checker. Technical Support Support will be given to students that connect their device to the school wireless network and vlearn. The College will support students with using the vlearn software. Any hardware issues or software issues that fall outside of the software provided by the College will not be supported. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of extended warranties as repair of devices will be the responsibility of parents and students. Software The College will provide software through vlearn. This includes Microsoft Office 365 whereby each student is entitled to install Office applications such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel on any 5 computer/laptop devices and any 5 tablets and any 5 smartphones. Network Storage The College will provide secure, backed up network storage for student work. It is strongly recommended that students make use of this storage to ensure their files are safe and secure. OneDrive is another safe place for students to save and back-up their work. Long-Term Device Loan A long-term device loan is for a period of time equivalent to a school term or greater. The purpose is to support families with challenging financial circumstances. These will be allocated on a priority basis and availability cannot be guaranteed. Parent permission is required with a signature of the long-term device loan agreement. Short-Term Device Loan A short-term loan is for a period of two weeks. The purpose is to provide interim support to families while devices are fixed or if they have been left at home. Parent permission is not required with a signature as permission is obtained through the Responsible Digital Citizen Agreement Students & Parents. 3 The College has acquired the services of JB Education (JB Hi-Fi) to set up a JB Purchasing Portal to make purchasing a device as easy as possible for families. The devices available to purchase are all strongly recommended by the College to any parents considering purchasing a new device for their child. All devices are listed at education prices. Optional extras can be purchased such as extra insurance and device accessories. The main considerations when identifying the best devices for students were: The battery life of the device so that it can last a full school day without needing to plug in and charge. The durability of the device so that it can handle trips to and from school in school bags as well as the day-to-day use in classrooms and around the College. The weight, size and portability of the device so that it is convenient to use in flexible learning spaces. The performance, operating system, speed, memory and storage so that the device meets students needs when accessing vlearn and also for personal use. LAPTOP DEVICE Laptops are portable computers which have a permanent keyboard. They come in different sizes, weights and capabilities. The Lenovo laptops are designed and built for education making them quite tough and durable. The Lenovo 11e Yoga and 11e Yoga pen devices both have touch-screen functionality and can be used like a tablet. The Apple laptops including MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are great devices particularly for students studying visual arts, graphics and multimedia. The screen quality is often greater in laptop devices and the size of the screen should be strongly considered when purchasing a device that is right for your child. Laptops are recommended for students in Years TABLET DEVICE ipad Tablets are portable touch screen devices that are lightweight, portable and easy to use. ipads will continue to be the only recommended tablet but with the introduction of vlearn keyboards are compulsory as of The ipad is very easy to manage due to their long battery life and small size. They are best suited to short, sharp tasks rather than large pieces of work. The ipad is recommended for students in Year 9. Students with an ipad must purchase a keyboard to improve the functionality of the device. A Citrix mouse should also be considered if your child would prefer to work with a mouse. DEVICE MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS The device minimum specifications are to be used as a guide for families who already own a device and want to know if they can bring it to school instead of purchasing a new device. To accompany the specifications and features listed, we have created a 5 star rating system across three key components which include battery life, durability/toughness and performance. These should all be taken into consideration when choosing a device for your child. Another important aspect is screen size. Apple MacBooks screens can vary in size from inches, Lenovo device screens are 11 inches and the ipad device has a 10 inch screen. 6 Device Minimum Specifications It is advised that if parents are purchasing a new device for their child to use in 2016 that they select one of the devices highly recommended by the College via the JB Purchasing Portal. These devices do not have to be purchased through the JB Portal but the JB Portal allows you to see information on the devices recommended by the College. If families already own a device and do not wish to purchase a new device the College fully supports them as long as the device adheres to all of the device minimum specifications. If a device does not meet these standards then it will not be deemed suitable for BYOD.
