Use the following information to determine the size and required quantity of memory DIMMs. The OmniCube memory population rules are as follows: 24 memory sockets split into two sets of 12 sockets, one socket per processor. Each 12-socket set is organized into four channels numbered 0-3. Sockets are assigned to CPUs as follows: A1 to A12 assigned to processor 1 B1 to B12 assigned to processor 2 The DIMM release levers are color-coded to identify the population sequence: White - populate first. Black - populate second. Green - populate third

5 Installing Memory DIMMS Use the following procedure to upgrade OmniCube memory (RAM). Before you Begin The installation procedure assumes that you have done the following: Taken all steps necessary to preserve VMs and data. Determined which slots to use for the upgrade. See CN-Series OmniCube Memory urations. Obtained the necessary number of DIMMs and memory blanks from SimpliVity. Performed a graceful shutdown and power off of both the Virtual Controller and the OmniCube. Uncabled the OmniCube and extended it from the rack. Caution: You must install memory-module blanks in all unoccupied memory sockets to ensure proper system cooling. Remove memory-module blanks only if you intend to install memory in those sockets. Caution: Many repairs can be done only by certified service technicians. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to unauthorized servicing is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product. Warning: The memory modules are hot to the touch for some time after the system has been powered down. Allow time for the memory modules to cool before handling them. Handle the memory modules by the card edges and avoid touching the components on the memory module. Steps for Installing Memory DIMMs in an OmniCube 1. Make sure you wear an ESD wriststrap and attach it to an unpainted grounding point on the rack, or use ESD heel straps. 2. Open the enclosure lid and set it aside. 3. Remove the cooling shroud behind the fan module as shown in Figure-2. Figure-2: Removing the Cooling Shroud 4. Locate the appropriate memory module sockets. See the outlined areas in Figure
6 Figure-3: OmniCube Memory Sockets Caution: Handle memory DIMMs by the PCB edges. Do not to touch the middle of the DIMM. 5. To remove DIMMs or blanks. press down and out on the ejector levers (2) on each end of the socket (3) until the DIMM (3) lifts out of the socket, as shown in Figure-4. Figure-4: Removing and Installing a Memory Module 6. To install new DIMMs, press the top edge of the DIMM into the socket, until the ejector levers (2) lock in the upright position and the DIMM (3) is firmly seated in the socket. Note: The socket has an alignment notch that fits a cut-out in the DIMM pcb, preventing you from installing the memory module in the wrong orientation. The orientation of a module depends on its location. See the lines in Figure-1 indicating the DIMM alignment notches. 7. Repeat Step 6 until you have installed all the DIMMs required for the upgrade. 8. Install DIMM blanks in any vacant memory-module sockets to ensure proper system cooling. 9. Verify that the levers on every memory module socket align, indicating that all DIMMs or blanks are properly inserted. 10. Replace the cooling shroud
7 11. Close the enclosure lid and push the enclosure back into the rack. 12. Reconnect all cables, but do not power-on the OmniCube. 13. Make sure that you have either a rack console (KVM), or a console connection through the IPMI so that you can monitor the boot procedure. 14. During boot, press the F2 key to enter System Setup and verify the memory configuration. 15. If the value is incorrect, one or more of the DIMMs might not be properly installed. Repeat step 5 through step 7, making sure that the memory modules are seated firmly in the sockets. 16. Boot the OmniCube and watch the console for: POST errors. Messages stating that the power configuration is changing because of hardware changes. This is normal, and an additional automatic reboot will occur. For assistance with errors, go to:
