1 Page 1 of 22 Advanced Features of Cybrary Users Guide Accessing Cybrary Cybrary is the library s collection of electronic databases. You can search for a variety of articles and books in multiple databases at once by using Cybrary. This guide will outline some of the advanced features of the system. To enter the Cybrary click Find Articles and ebooks on the library homepage. Click the Search button at the top of the next page. The one to the right of the Cybrary logo. This will open the Cybrary 2.0 Search page.

A keyword is a term or phrase related to the topic you are researching.

2 Page 2 of 22 Searching in Cybrary Type your keyword(s) into the search box at the top of the page. What is a keyword? A keyword is a term or phrase related to the topic you are researching. To develop keywords, think of the core ideas of your topic. When you have your keyword(s) in place, click Search. Here s an example of a search: Results will load below.

3 Page 3 of 22 You ll see an icon next to each result stating what type of resource it is. When looking through articles, an easy way to see if an article will be useful is to view the abstract, which will give you a summary of the article. You can view an article s abstract by hovering your cursor over the magnifying glass icon to the right of an article s title. Then, if the article seems worthwhile, click the link for full text. What is HTML and PDF? When pulling up results you may find that some off the full text in PDF and some in HTML. Some articles offer both.

Page 4 of 22 HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. The item will appear similar to a web page. Some formatting may be lost and usually these do not include images.

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. A PDF format looks like a photograph was taken of the original and scanned. It will have the same margin and font and include images if there were any in the original item. Sometimes there is no choice. The publishers of the content have opted to make their materials available in only one format. If you do have a choice, it s up to you which you prefer! Once you are in the full text, you will see icons to print, save, or your article. If the item is a PDF, you may see the link to download: If the item is an HTML, you may opt to save it by going to Page at the top of your screen and selecting Save As from the drop down list: If you are saving the article, be sure it is being saved to your computer. If you are not asked where on your computer you want to save the item then it will not have saved properly. Use one of the other options. Saving it as a bookmark in your browser will not work. You can try additional searches by adding or changing your keywords in the boxes at the top of the page.

5 Page 5 of 22 Limiting Results You can limit results by using the options to the left of your results under the heading Refine your results. Peer Reviewed A peer reviewed article is one that has been reviewed by the author s peers, other experts in the field, prior to publication. This review is done to ensure that the information presented is accurate. Peer reviewed articles are more research-oriented, discussing the results of an experiment or study. You can limit to Peer Reviewed articles by checking the box and clicking the Update button.

Source Types The Cybrary brings up various types of results such as academic journals,

6 Page 6 of 22 Date Range You can limit by date range by entering the earliest and latest years of publication in the boxes or using the scroll bars and clicking Update. To limit to one particular type of material check the box next to the type of material and click Update.

To help you find the most relevant items you can limit your results to see only those with particular subject

7 Page 7 of 22 Subject Headings Every item in the Cybrary is given a subject heading. These are terms used to describe the subject of the item. To help you find the most relevant items you can limit your results to see only those with particular subject terms from Subject: Thesaurus Term, or Subject listed to the left. Select the terms you would like to use in your search and click Update. Note: you can select Show More at the bottom to see more terms.

Content Provider The Cybrary pulls up results from several different databases.

8 Page 8 of 22 Publication To view results from only selected publications that come up in the results, look under the Publication heading. Select the titles you would like to limit your results to. Click Update. Note: you can select Show More at the bottom to see more titles. Content Provider The Cybrary pulls up results from several different databases. If you would like to see results from only selected databases within the system, open the Content Provider heading. Select the database name you would like to view the results from and click Update. 9 Page 9 of 22 Viewing Additional Results To the right of your results you ll notice additional database names. To see results from one or more of these databases, check the box next to the database name. Note: you may want to deselect the box next to EBSCO Discovery Service, since these are the results you re already viewing.

10 Page 10 of 22 Click the Update button. Now you will only see results from those databases in the center of the page. Note: this differs from the Content Provider limit shown above. When selecting Content Provider you are limiting to certain results that pulled up. Selecting a database name to the right will show you results that did not pull up when you first did the search.

11 Page 11 of 22 Creating An Account Cybrary allows you to create your own account. Once you create an account you can save items, set preferences, and create alerts to be informed of new material on your topic. To get started, click the Sign In link at the top of the page. To create the account, click the Create a new Account link Creating an account requires filling out a short form and creating a User Name and Password. Note: neither the library nor your school s IT dept. can assist you if you forget your User Name or Password, or have trouble logging into the Cybrary. You will need to use the forgot your user name and password help links, or contact EBSCO tech support. Folder Feature The Cybrary folder allows you to save results for easy access every time you sign in. When you pull up results, you ll notice the Add to Folder link.

To access items in your folder, click the Folder link at the top of the page.

12 Page 12 of 22 Note: you must have first signed in. If you are not signed in the item will not be saved anywhere. To access items in your folder, click the Folder link at the top of the page. You can then see all of the items you have saved. You can use the options on the right to print, , or download one or more results. Check the box next to the item s title and then click the icon.

You can also select where you would like to move your folder to.

When the new window opens, name the folder. You can also select where you would like to move your folder to. For example, if you would like a folder within a folder. Lastly, you can make any notes for the folder such as to remind you about the materials.

Sharing Folders You can share folders with others who have created a Cybrary account. Click the link to Share under the folder title. Fill out the address and any message you want to include to the person you re sharing your folder with. If you want to restrict access to just the person or people you are ing keep the check mark in the box next to Restrict Passcode for Single Use at the very bottom.

Page 15 of 22 If, however, you want the person or people you re sharing with to pass it on to others, deselect this option.

Once they sign in on Cybrary, entering the passcode will allow them to view the holdings in the folder you are sharing.

Note: the person with whom the folder is being shared can view, print, email, and save the results but will not be able to add, edit, or delete items.

15 Page 15 of 22 If, however, you want the person or people you re sharing with to pass it on to others, deselect this option. The person will receive an including a passcode. Once they sign in on Cybrary, entering the passcode will allow them to view the holdings in the folder you are sharing. If you have been given access to a shared folder, you will see the link to it underneath the Shared By heading on the left side of the page. Note: the person with whom the folder is being shared can view, print, , and save the results but will not be able to add, edit, or delete items. Setting Preferences Once you create an account and sign in you can set your own preferences for viewing results by clicking the Preference link at the top of the page. You can set options for searching, the page layout, the number of results you ll see at once, printing and downloading formats, and more.

16 Page 16 of 22 Creating Alerts & Saving Searches You can create alerts through or RSS to be informed of new items on your topic made available in Cybrary. Once you do a search, click the Alert/Save/Share link directly above your results. Select the type of alert you d like to create.

If you would like to apply more options to your alerts, such as specify a particular database within Cybrary you want results from, click the Advanced Settings option under the Save Alert button.

Search History, Connecting Searches, & Saving Searches If you would like to view or save your search history, click the link for Search History underneath the search boxes. This will bring up a listing of all of the searches done during your session.

Put a check mark in the box next to two or more terms from previous searches and then click the Search with AND or Search with OR connector at the top. Note: Using AND between search terms will pull up results that contain all of your search terms in the subject, title, or text. Using OR between search terms will pull up results that contain one or the other of your search terms in the subject, title, or text. Therefore, using the OR operator will bring up more results than using AND, and many of those articles will not be connecting your search terms. Multimedia Search If you only want to search for images, click the link for Multimedia at the top of the page. You will have the search box to enter your search term(s).

You do not have to apply any limit; the system will pull up a variety of image results. Once you have entered your search term(s). Click Search. Results will load below the search box. Click on the image to view it. Use the icons to the right under Tools to add the image to a folder, print, , or save the image.

21 Page 21 of 22 You can save images to your folder, by using the Add to Folder link below the image information. You can use the options to the left of your results to limit to a particular type of image. Check the box next to the image type and click Update.
