1 How to Use Widener Widener allows you to search all of the library s databases and the library catalog at the same time. With just one search, you can obtain books, ebooks, scholarly journal articles, newspaper articles, videos and much more on your topic. Explore what is available! IMPORTANT: Widener does not just return results that are available in full text from this library; rather it shows the wide variety of what you can obtain on a topic. The information in each record will indicate if you can obtain the item from the library or if you need to order it through ILLiad. You can access Widener by using the search box on the library s homepage: Library Home Page Enter your search term into the search box to obtain results from a wide variety of sources, always use quotation marks around phrases:

3 1. The Research Starter begins many sets of results. This provides a useful overview of each topic with an extensive bibliography. Click here for information on a related topic. 2. The Book Brief Record provides all the information needed to obtain the book from the library s shelves, including the call number! Call Number 3. The Journal Article Brief Record provides all the important bibliographic information about the article. Notice the PDF full text link. This icon verifies that the article comes from an academic source. Links to the PDF Full Text!

4 4. The AP Video Carousel displays different video clips related to the topic. Click on the image to play the video. Click here to view all AP videos on this topic. Other resources you will obtain through Discovery include: The ebook Brief Record provides all the information needed to obtain the ebook from the database, including the PDF Full Text and the Download Options. ebooks can be read online in the ebook Viewer by clicking the ebook PDF Full Text link. Click here to download the ebook and read it offline another time. Adobe Digital Editions is required for offline viewing. Download the free software here. You must create a My EBSCOhost account to download a book, create the account here. Step-by-Step Guide to ebooks The Magazine Article Brief Record provides all the important bibliographic information about the article. Notice the full text links. This icon verifies that the article comes from a popular source. Always select the PDF Full Text Option; you will obtain any graphs, charts and images in this article as well as accurate page numbers.

5 5. Limiting Options 5 Use the many limiting options in the box at the left to limit your search. Limiting by peer reviewed, publication date, source type, subject, database etc. helps obtain more specific results. Try the many limiting options offered in the box. When you search for post-traumatic stress disorder and limit to Available in Library Collection, each record features a PDF Full Text icon. This search also returns academic journals and ebooks, as show below:

6 The detailed record screens for ebooks and academic journals offer the same functionality that you find in the individual databases. Yet, when you click on hyperlinked subjects or authors, you search in the whole Discovery system and obtain the large variety of results available throughout the library s collection. ebook - Detailed Record Click on an author s name to obtain additional works by that author. Click on a Subject Heading to obtain additional works on that subject. Journal Article Detailed Record Click on an author s name to obtain additional works by that author.
