3 Organization of this manual This manual describes the features and operation principles of the data transfer software for vibration meter VM-82A. For information regarding the operation of other equipment in the case of incorporating the VM-82A into a measurement system with other equipment, always make sure to refer to the documentation of the other equipment. This manual contains the following sections. Outline Provides a general explanation of the data transfer software for VM-82A. 4 Software Usage License Agreement Important In order to use this Software, you must agree to the terms of the Software Usage License Agreement (hereinafter this Agreement ). Please read the following text carefully, and only proceed to use the Software if you agree to be bound by all the terms and conditions of this Agreement. Article 1 Authorized Use This Software (including updated or customized versions) is designed for use with the vibration meter VM-82A (hereinafter the Product ). You are authorized to use the Software only in conjunction with the Product, in such a way as stipulated in this Agreement. Article 2 Ownership of the Software All rights to this Software are retained by RION Co., LTD, (hereinafter RION ) and/or its rightful owners. This Agreement grants you only a limited right to use the Software. This Agreement does not grant you any other rights other than specified herein. Article 3 Limitations to Use and Transfer 1. This Agreement does not grant you any rights to copy the Software and any associated documentation. 2. This Agreement does not grant you any rights to alter or modify the Software. 3. This Agreement does not grant you any rights to reverse engineer, decompile, recompile, or disassemble the Software. 4. Unless prior written permission from RION has been obtained, this Agreement does not grant you any rights to lend the Software to any third parties, regardless of whether this is done for payment or free of charge. 5. This Agreement does not grant you any rights to transfer the rights specified in this Agreement to any third parties. ii

5 Article 4 Warranty Scope 1. RION does not make any representation or promise that this Software will be able to perform without problems under any and all conditions. If a problem occurs while the Software is being used under normal conditions, contact RION using the information provided in the instruction manual. As far as possible based on the information provided by you about the problem, RION will provide guidance and information about possible errors, improved operation procedures and similar. 2. RION (including any affiliated companies or subsidiaries) does not assume any liability for any damage caused by alteration or loss of data stored in the Product, even if this is due to a defect or other problem with the Software. 3. In no event does RION assume liability for any kind of direct or indirect damage, loss of profit or anticipated gain, or any other damage caused by the use of the Software, or the inability to use the Software. 4. In no event does RION assume liability for any problem caused by an alteration or modification of the Software by you. RION also does not assume liability for any damage caused to yourself by such an alteration or modification. Article 5 Duration of this Agreement 1. You can terminate this Agreement at any time by stopping to use the Software and destroying the Software and all associated documentation. 2. If you violate any of the conditions of this Agreement, RION can cancel this Agreement and terminate the usage of the Software. In such a case, you are obligated to destroy the Software and all associated documentation (including any unauthorized copies). iii

6 Article 6 Other Items If the Software and the Product are taken from Japan to any other country, the Japanese Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Law, the United States Export Administration Act, and all other applicable laws and regulations must be strictly observed. This Agreement shall be exclusively governed by the laws of Japan. Article 7 Third Party Beneficiaries This Software includes components for which the rights are held by other parties except RION. In the case of a violation of this Agreement, in addition to RION, such third parties shall also have the right to demand compensation for damages. iv

To prevent the risk of severe damage to the software or peripheral equipment, make sure that all instructions are fully understood and observed. 11 Outline The data transfer software for VM-82A serves for importing collected data saved in the memory of the vibration meter VM-82A to a computer and showing a list display of measurement data. Measurement data and stored data can be saved as CSV format files which can be imported into generally available spreadsheet software for further processing. Use of the data transfer software for VM-82A is explained in this manual under the assumption that the operator is familiar with usage procedures of the vibration meter VM-82A as well as of computers and Windows in general. The environment requirements for use of this software are as follows. Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 32-bit/64-bit, Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit English or Japanese language environment Installation and use of the software requires that the user has Administrator privileges. Vibration meter VM-82A USB cable (A to Mini-B type) required for connection to computer System requirements The system must fulfill all requirements for running the respective Windows version, and processor speed must be at least 1 GHz RAM: 1 GB or more.net Framework 2.0 or later USB 2.0 or later 1 port Hard disk space requirements 16 GB or more 1

13 Preparations Installation of data transfer software for VM-82A Install the software as described below. 1. Start up Windows. 2. Execute the VM-82A Datatransfer Setup(E).exe file downloaded to the computer. 3. Follow the instructions on the setup screens of the data transfer software for VM-82A. 4. If you use the software on Windows 8, run the software once after installation with the Internet connection. Windows 8 installs.net Framework 3.5 automatically if.net Framework 3.5 is not installed on the Windows 8. Windows 8 does not install.net Framework 3.5 if.net Framework 3.5 is already installed. If you cannot connect the Internet, see instruction manual of Windows 8. Windows 7 does not require.net Framework 3.5 installation. This completes the setup procedure for the data transfer software for VM-82A. Note The user installing the software must be logged into the operating system with Administrator privileges (i.e. the user must be the Administrator or a member of the Administrators group). If installation is attempted while not logged in as an Administrator, the message Path not found may appear and installation may not proceed. Uninstallation of data transfer software for VM-82A In order to the remove the data transfer software for VM-82A from the computer after installation, uninstall it by accessing the [Start] menu and selecting [Control Panel] [Add or Remove Programs] to initiate the uninstallation process. 1. From the list of installed programs, select Data transfer software for VM-82A and click the [Change/Remove] button. 2. Follow the instructions on the uninstallation screens to remove the program. 3

14 Main menu window First, verify that the computer s clock (year/month/day, hour/minutes/seconds) is set correctly. While using this software, it is recommended to close other programs that may be running on the computer. Access the Windows [Start] menu and select [All Programs] [Data transfer software for VM-82A]. Clicking this entry will bring up the Main menu window of the software, as shown below. Main menu window Comm. setting Moves to the communication setting window explained on the next page. Help Brings up the version information window explained on the next page. [Load stored data] Brings up the window for importing data from the VM-82A to the computer (see page 6). [Exit] Shuts down the software. 4

15 Main menu window Communication setting window This window serves for selecting the COM port of the computer to be used for communication. The COM port which exists in the computer is indicated. Select the COM port connected with the VM-82A and click [OK]. The port is set and the Main Menu window appears again. Clicking the [Cancel] button returns to the Main Menu window without changing the currently active setting. Note The COM port connected with the VM-82A can be checked by accessing the [Start] menu and selecting [Control Panel] [Device Manager]. Communication setting (Comm. setting) window Version information window Shows version information about the software. Version information window Click [OK] to return to the Main menu window. 5

16 Importing stored data All data stored in the VM-82A are listed on the Load stored data window. Click here At the Main menu window of the data transfer software for VM-82A, clicking [Load stored data] brings up the Load stored data window. Load stored data window (1) 6

17 Importing stored data Window explanation File Serves to create a CSV format file from the respective data (see File creation on page 10). Help Brings up the version information window (see page 5). [Load stored data] Loads all data stored in the VM-82A and lists them on the window (see example below). 18 Importing stored data [Delete stored data] Serves for deleting data stored in the VM-82A. (The confirmation window shown below appears.) Clicking the [OK] button deletes all measurement data stored in the VM-82A. Clicking [Cancel] returns to the Load stored data window (2). [Clear list] Serves for clearing data displayed on the window. (The confirmation window shown below appears.) Clicking the [OK] button clears all measurement data shown on the window. Clicking [Cancel] returns to the Load stored data window (2). [Exit] Closes the Load stored data window and returns to the Main Menu window. 8

19 Importing stored data Communication error indication If an error has occurred while trying to load or delete stored data, an error message window such as shown below will appear. Check for possible causes, such as a defective connection cable, loose connector, wrong communication port setting, insufficient battery voltage of VM-82A, etc. 9

20 File creation Selecting File on the Load stored data window and clicking on Save will bring up a Save As window such as shown below. Here you can specify the folder where the file should be saved, and specify a name for the file. Save As window Stored data are saved as a CSV format file. [Save] Click this button to save the file. [Cancel] Returns to the Load stored data window without saving the file. 10
