4 Experion eserver Specification, EP Introduction 1.1. Experion eserver Overview Experion eserver provides secure, read only, web browser-based access to Experion custom displays and trends for remote users. Remote access is made possible by Experion eserver s architecture which protects and preserves the integrity of the process control environment by focusing casual users towards a single access point and isolating the process control network from the business network Experion eserver Client Types Experion eserver offers two client types: Standard and Premium Access. Experion eserver Standard Access supports snapshots of user built custom displays through a browser client and does not require any software to be installed on the client. Experion eserver Premium Access requires a small plug-in and supports dynamically updated custom displays, and trends. Note that eserver Standard Access and Premium Access clients do not support access to Experion system displays, Alarm Summaries and Faceplates. The tables below highlight the key differences between the two eserver client types Experion eserver Standard Access Experion eserver Standard Access Description Experion eserver Standard Access enables remote users to view static snap-shot versions of Experion custom displays from any web browser. Access to these displays is always view-only. Details Users can view Experion custom displays using any type of Web browser, independent of client hardware configuration or operating system. Users do not need to download or install additional software. The Experion displays shown are the same displays that can be accessed from an Experion Console or Flex Station, no conversion is required. Users are limited to using simple navigation controls on the pages such as embedded simple links. Users can request an update of the display data by using the browser refresh command. Standard access clients are not individually licensed; enabling access for hundreds of casual users. eserver standard access clients view cached custom displays. The cache time is the time that the display page is kept and served to users. When a page older than the cache time is requested, an updated page is served. Setting longer cache times allows the eserver to serve hundreds of users. If used to provide a frequently updating view of large amount of process data, users may be served Experion eserver Premium Access Experion eserver Premium Access displays and trends Description Experion eserver Premium Access enables remote users to view live Experion displays and trends from Microsoft s Internet Explorer (IE). Access to these displays is always view-only. Details Users can view Experion displays using Microsoft Internet Explorer. Users need to download a plugin for Microsoft Internet Explorer that enables premium access features, such as live data updates refresh and support of Experion custom display dynamics. Premium access clients are configured with a rotary Station connection, enabling numerous casual
5 Experion eserver Specification, EP users to access the Experion eserver as needed, which is advantageous from a licensing point of view. For example when 38 Premium Access connections are configured, 38 connections can be established at one time but the software could be available to many more than 38 individual clients Deployment Figure 1 : eserver Network Topology Experion eserver is deployed on the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ - Level 3.5) and connects via DSA to Experion PKS servers on the Process Control Network (Levels 3 and 2). eserver Premium Access clients require a small plug-in to be installed for Internet Explorer to have Premium Access. Standard Access clients do not require any plug-ins. Collaboration Station access to applications on the business network can be achieved using Microsoft Remote Desktop. Skype integration is disabled when Collaboration Station is used on the PCN.
6 Experion eserver Specification, EP Related Solutions Experion Mobile Station is a fully functional alternative for remote display access. Experion Mobile Station requires the use of a Remote Engineering and Station Server (RESS) and supports all Experion Station functions. 2. Specifications 2.1. Client Sizing Limits shown here apply to the number of clients supported for a single Experion eserver. Clients per eserver node Maximum Premium Access Clients 38 Standard Access Clients Unlimited 1 Note 1 The number of simultaneous Standard Access Clients is limited by total connectivity load on the eserver which depends on the number of different displays being viewed and the total number of simultaneous clients Database Sizing Experion eserver connects to one or more Experion Servers and can serve data and displays from these Experion Servers to its clients. Items Specifications Comments Maximum number of Remote Data Access points per eserver node Maximum number of DSA-connected servers per eserver node 1 250,000 This is the total number of points that an eserver can access. 60 Experion eserver connects to up to this number of Experion servers. Note 1 Assumes eserver has its own EMDB, and all Experion Servers are external servers; otherwise a limit of 30 applies.

9 Experion eserver Specification, EP Experion eserver Interoperability Distributed System Architecture interoperability is defined as a DSA-based runtime connection between Experion eserver and the Experion server(s). Experion eserver uses DSA to get data from Experion servers, so if different Experion versions are being used only those that support DSA interoperability are supported. To share display files eserver must be at the same release or at a more recent release than the Experion servers it connects to. Experion eserver Release Can inter-operate with Experion R500.x?
