1 Written by: Mickey Nguyen What is Virtual Machine (VM)? A Virutal Machine (VM) is an emulation of a computer system. It gives you a specific Operating System (OS) such as Linux/Solaris/Windows7/Windows10/.. to support your need. Here is instruction download VirtualBox to your PC-Laptop and create a Virtual Machine for Linux OS Download and Install VirtualBox Click on Window Installer, save and run install (take all default) After finish installing VitualBox, bring up VirtualBox from your desktop

2 Steps to create a Virtual Machine for Linux environment Here is example how to create a Virtual Machine for Linux environment. There are many of Linux versions available to use. I pick Ubuntu (64 bits) version for this exercise. Click on New to create a first Virtual Machine.

3 Click Next, you can increase memory size or use default 1024MB

5 Click Create Click Next

6 Click Next

7 Click Create

8 Before click on start, you need to download Ubuntu iso file then config to use it Down load Ubuntu (64 bits).iso file If they ask for donate thru paypal, you can choose option Not now, take me to download Setting Ubuntu Click on Setting

9 Click on Storage

10 Controller: IDE It is Empty and you need to point to the Ubuntu iso file you just download Optical Drive, point to the location where you save Ubuntu iso file

11 Controller: SATA Click Mickey-Linux.vdi, click on hard disk to create new hard disk

13 Click Next, and increase to around 50GB Click Create

14 Click Ok Now click on start you Virtual Machine (Mickey-Linux)->Start

15 You have two options: Try Ubuntu or install Ubuntu.

16 If you install Ubuntu, just click on Install Ubuntu and follow install process. For now, I click on Try Ubuntu.

17 Right click on screen ->open terminal to open Linux terminal Now, you are in Linux environment, you can try any Linux/Unix command It is a good idea to install Ubuntu. You can install it anytime. At this point you can have Linux environment already Extra Information Since your Window OS and Linux OS are two different environments, in order to copy files between Window and Linux, you need to set up a share folder or simply just use the USB thumb drive. Here are step to set up share folder. On your window, create a folder

18 On Linux VM, click on Devices->Shared Folders->Shared Folder Setting

19 Click on + icon Point to your share folder path, select auto-mount, make permanent Click OK

20 Now, you can transfer files between Windows and Linux thru that share folder. In conclusion VirtualBox allows you create Virtual Machine in different OS (Linux/Solaris/Windows) for your need. You can create multiple machines on VirtualBox. You can right click on the current Virtual Machine to remove and recreate it. If you remove and create the same machine name, you need go to window explorer to remove the old folder How to clone a Virtual Machine You can clone a current working Virtual Machine and share with new team member who create a new Virtual Machine and want to have the same files as the current Virtual Machine had. Power off the Source Virtual Machine, right click on that Virtual Machine->Clone. Or from the Menu, click on Machine->Clone

22 You will see the whole Mickey-Linux cloned

23 I am going to copy the red color Virtual Disk Image to somewhere else, then show you to create a Virtual Machine base with this existing image Anybody can use this image to create new Virtual Machine Click Next->Next Select Use an existing Virtual Hard Disk file

25 Click Create Click on new Virtual Machine Mickey2, click on Setting->storage Controller: IDE is Empty You need to add Ubuntu iso file as you did it earlier

26 Now you can start the new Virtual Machine Have a good day!
