4 Windows 10 File History Overview Turn it on Select a backup location Automatically backs up your files Default settings: Everything in your user folder (Libraries, Desktop, Contacts, and Favorites) Libraries include all your Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos Backs up changes every hour Keeps files forever Choose to include extra folders or exclude folders Does not make a system image Restore your files easily in File Explorer Let s Do it!

5 Windows 10 Backup Equipment you need to begin Portable hard drive Seagate Backup Plus 2TB Portable Hard Drive* - I Recommended Costco # $84.99 Or similar 2TB hard drive Or, a USB Thumb Drive 256GB About $40, but may fill up Or, a network drive (advanced) Or, a second internal hard drive

6 How to Set it Up Navigate to Backup Plug in the portable hard drive. Do not install any backup software! Click on: All settings Update & security Backup Add a drive

7 Select a Drive to Use Your USB hard drive Default settings: Everything in your user folder (Libraries, Desktop, Contacts, and Favorites) Libraries include all your Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos Backs up every hour Keeps files forever

8 You are Done! Verify it is Working: Click on Settings Update & security Backup At any time you can click on Back up now to make another copy Check the last time it backed up and total file size That s it! Wasn t that easy?

13 How to Restore a Deleted File 1. Open File Explorer 2. Navigate to the folder where it was before you deleted it 10 Best Practices.docx 3. Click on History

14 Go Back in History Pick a Deleted File

15 Select the Deleted File Select a file and click the green Restore button Once you click on the green button, the file is immediately restored

16 Go Back in History Restoring a Changed File I want to restore Backup and Restore on One Sheet.docx in the Documents Folder to yesterday s version Navigate to the Documents Folder in File Explorer Click on History button

18 Restoring a Changed File If you are replacing an existing file, you will get this box: Click here and the file is immediately restored Oops, cancel

19 Advanced Users Restoring after a hard disk crash This will use File History to restore the most recent versions of all your files. 1. Once you have Windows 10 installed on your new hard disk, reconnect your external hard disk and launch File History. 2. On the Back Up Using File History page, click the Add A Drive button. 3. Windows 10 will then search for and prompt you to select a drive. 4. When you select the drive containing your backup, File History will recognize that it already contains a set of files. 5. You can begin the restore operation using the steps I explained above for restoring individual files and folders.

20 A Few Considerations If you take your laptop on the road Shut it down & then unplug the external drive When you return Plug the external hard drive back in File History will pick up where you left off and resume backing up your files If you get a message that your File History drive has been unplugged too long just plug in your external drive and click on Backup Now to restart File History

21 Summary File History Plug in an external hard drive Open Backup and add the drive Changes to your files will be backed up every hour and kept forever. Use File Explorer and the History Button to restore a deleted or changed file
