1 Quick Start Guide Setting up Your Scanner This quick start guide explains how to install scanner driver software and the PCG assessment tool, how to set scanner settings, and how to adjust or modify specific scanner models. Before you can begin scanning assessments into EdPlan, you must set up your hardware and software correctly. Pre-installation Requirements 1 Install the HP drivers and software: ISIS/TWAIN drivers. 2 Ensure that the HP scanner is communicating correctly with the computer and can scan independently. Installing Drivers and the PCG Assessment Tool The first step to proper scanning is ensuring you have the necessary drivers and an up-to-date version of the PCG Assessment Tool software. 1 Log into the EdPlan website Username: teacher9 password: teacher9 *Use your own login if you have one. (We have from teacher 1-teacher 30 so you can try any combination) 2 Go to the Solution Center at the bottom of the navigation bar on the left 3 Download PCG Assessment Tool V or latest version. 2 a. You may have to update the.net framework for it to install. The link is under system requirements. 4 If the user has already downloaded the PCG assessment tool and you are checking for the correct version, click on the application. 5 Inside the application click on Help > About. 6 Check for the following version number: Version *If the user has the wrong version you will have to uninstall the old version and then install the new one. 3 Adjusting PCG Assessment Tool Reference Settings Now that you ve downloaded the software, it s time to set it up so that it will communicate correctly with your scanner. Deselecting the OMR option 1 Navigate to Scanner > References from the navigation menu. 2 In the Reference menu, click the Advanced button. 3 Deselect Custom OMR Settings, and then click OK. *The checkbox should be unchecked. 4 Log into the PCG Assessment Tool With all reference settings now set correctly, you can log into the PCG Assessment Tool. 1 Log in with the same username and password above and select Barcode Scan. 2 Select the scanner from the dropdown list and check the Show MFP Scanner UI box, and then follow the Scanner Settings Guidelines: * Each scanner is unique and so are its settings. 5 Guidance on the various scanner models Use the following sub-guides to set scanner settings specific to the scanner model used on your campus. Scanner Threshold Chart This chart outlines the optimum scanner threshold settings determined by the EdPlan Support Team regarding each specific scanner. Scanner Model Default Threshold EdPlan Support Recommends HP n HP n HP Scanjet HP Scanjet HP Scanjet 7000s HP Scanjet Adjusting Settings for Scanner Models 7000s2 and 7500 This section explains how to set image options, threshold, and how to setup a settings profile and set it as the system default for future use. 1 Double Click on Image Options: ppi should be at 300 ppi and the threshold should be at 60. 6 2 Save Changes and ensure the name of the profile is EdPlan. 3 Click on Set as default. A green check denotes it is set as the default. 4 Click OK. Quick Start Guide Setting Up Your Scanner 6

7 Adjusting Settings for Scanner Models n8420, n8460, 5000, and 7000 This section explains how to set image options, threshold, and how to setup and settings profile and set it as the system default for future use. 1 Look for an EdPlan profile. If none exist click on the Main tab. 2 Delete any profiles labeled Default[2] or Default[3]. 3 Update the settings to a resolution of 300 dpi, Mode 1-bit black and white. Threshold for black and white vary from scanner to scanner. The optimal threshold for the N8420 is 77 dpi. 4 Save As EdPlan. Quick Start Guide Setting Up Your Scanner 7

8 5 Use a pre-slugged answer document that contains a Barcode. 6 When you select print and you are taken to the print wizard; some printer drivers will call this paper handling, scaling or size options. *This step is critical because the scantron or form has timing marks in each corner and if those are out of place the form will not find the bubbles in the correct place. *It is very important that when the scantrons are printed, they must be printed using the correct paper scaling setting it to none or actual size. 7 Load the answer documents in the scanning tray and click Scan to begin scanning the answer documents. 9 8 Once the scanning is complete, check the Answers column for anomalies and data accuracy. a. Double click on any row of answers to look at the responses. 9 Once the testing has been successful, click the Submit button to submit the test for grading to ensure accurate scanning and scoring. *Please ensure that when the thresholds are updated they are set as the default. *Test twice to ensure the thresholds have been retained and are in fact set correctly as the default. *If you need support installing or updating the scanning settings of your scanner, please contact the Help Desk.
