2 Disk cleanup Cleaning out your PC on a regular basis frees up drive space and helps it run better. One of the easiest ways to clean up files you no longer need is by using Disk Cleanup.

3 Disk cleanup (Cont.) 1. To open Disk Cleanup from the desktop, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings (or if you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings), tap or click Control Panel, type Admin in the Search box, tap or click Administrative Tools, and then double-tap or double-click Disk Cleanup. 2. If prompted, tap or click the drive that you want to clean up, and then tap or click OK.

4 Disk cleanup (Cont.) 3. In the Disk Cleanup dialog box in the Description section, tap or click Clean up system files. You might be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice. 4. If prompted, tap or click the drive that you want to clean up, and then tap or click OK. 5. In the Disk Cleanup dialog box, on the Disk Cleanup tab, select the check boxes for the file types that you want to delete, and then tap or click OK.

5 Disk cleanup (Cont.) 6. In the message that appears, tap or click Delete files. 7. Go back to Computer in File Explorer, tap or click the drive you cleaned up, and then tap or click Refresh. If you need to free more space (the drive is still marked red), go to the next tip.

7 Disk Defragmenter 1. Open Optimize Drives by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Defragment in the search box, and then tapping or clicking Defragment and optimize your drives.

8 Disk Defragmenter (Cont.) 2. Under Status, tap or click the drive you want to optimize. (The Media type column tells you what type of drive you're optimizing.) 3. To determine if the drive needs to be optimized, tap or click Analyze. You might be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice. After Windows is finished analyzing the drive, check the Current status column to see whether you need to optimize the drive. If the drive is more than 10% fragmented, you should optimize the drive now.

9 Disk Defragmenter (Cont.) 4. Tap or click Optimize. You might be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice. 5. Optimizing a drive might take anywhere from several minutes to a few hours to finish, depending on the size of the drive and degree of optimization needed. You can still use your PC during the optimization process.

10 Recycle bin The Recycle Bin on the desktop is a temporary storage place for deleted files. When you delete a file or folder on your PC, it doesn't get permanently deleted it goes to the Recycle Bin. This is good because if you ever change your mind and decide you need a deleted file, you can get it back

11 Recycle bin (Cont.) If you accidentally delete a file, you can restore it to its original location. To restore files from the Recycle Bin 1. Open the Recycle Bin by double-tapping or double-clicking the Recycle Bin on the desktop.

12 Recycle bin (Cont.) 2. Do one of the following: To restore a file, select the file, tap or click Manage, and then tap or click Restore the selected items. To restore all of the files, tap or click Manage, and then tap or click Restore all items. The files will be restored to their original locations on your PC.

14 Update your PC automatically Windows Update installs important updates as they become available. Windows 8 will turn on automatic updating as part of the initial setup process. Keep in mind, Windows Update won't add any applications to your computer without asking for your permission.

15 Antivirus protection In Windows 8, Windows Defender replaces Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender runs in the background and notifies you when you need to take specific action. However, you can use it anytime to scan for malware if your computer isn t working properly or you clicked a suspicious link online or in an message.

16 Avoid scams with new phishing filter Windows SmartScreen is a new safety feature that can help protect you from phishing scams and new malware that your anti-malware software hasn't detected yet. It warns you if it doesn't recognize a website or app. You can also change Windows SmartScreen settings for how it handles unrecognized apps.
