The test method specifies that the base of the test machine should have air escape holes 6.5mm in diameter spaced 20mm apart to allow for a prescribed rate of air escape under the test specimen. TestResources foam test machines always include this base as shown in the photo on the right. ASTM D3574 specifies the use of a compression platen 200mm in diameter, with a spherical bearing to accommodate test specimens that are not exactly uniform in thickness. All TestResources foam test machines are also equipped with this platen. ASTM D3574 Test Method B1 is the industry de facto standard test for firmness rating of soft foam. 5 Basic Flexible Soft Foam Software Package The Basic Flexible Soft Foam Software Package is provided with each TestResources foam test machine. This package is designed for ASTM D3574 Test Method B1. Your test results will be certifiable to that industry standard. Our software will provide a test report that gives you an accurate ratio of firmness factor. Now you can communicate with your vendors and customers with quantified test results such as hardness factor, or comfort factor. The ASTM D3574 B1 test takes over 10 minutes to run for a specimen of about 4 inches thickness. That s a long time, especially in a factory production environment.
