1 3.5 Indeterminate Forms Introduction; Consider the function given by the rule f() = ; its graph is shown below. 0 0 situations Clearly, = 3. Note, however, that if one merely tried to plug in 0 for when investigating this it, a 0 0 situation would have occurred. To see which of these two situations occurs, it is necessary to rewrite the function f to get it into a form where one can better analyze what s happening near c. a 0 0 situation; the it eists Problem: Evaluate the it 0. Solution: Remember that when investigating a it as approaches 0, is not allowed to equal 0. And, for all values of ecept 0, = 3. Therefore, the it statement can be rewritten in an easier form: = 0 ( = 3 whenever 0) = 3 (the it of a constant function) When evaluating the it c f(), the function f may be replaced by ANY function that agrees with f NEAR c (but not necessarily AT c). It is necessary to rewrite in a way that better displays what is happening near = 1. Since 1 is a zero of the numerator, is a factor of the numerator. Indeed, factoring and canceling yields: Thus: = ()( + 2) (factor the numerator) for 1 = + 2 (cancel factor of 1) (*) ()( + 2) = 1 1 = ( + 2) 1 = 3 a restricted equal sign The second = sign that appears in (*) above is a sort of restricted equal sign. It is NOT completely correct to say that ( 1)(+2) 1 = + 2, since these two epressions are NOT equal for all values of. The left-most epression is not defined when is 1; the right-most epression is 3 when is 1. To bring attention to this difference in the epressions, the necessary restriction is indicated over the equal sign. Thus, the reader becomes aware that the equality only holds when is not equal to 1. If the restricted equal sign seem bothersome to you, there is an alternate (but more cumbersome) solution. One can instead say: = ()( + 2) and for 1, this latter epression simplifies to + 2. ; an important distinction The equal sign in the sentence ()( + 2) = ( + 2) 1 1 is not a restricted equal sign. This equal sign is asserting that two real numbers are equal. Remember that every it, if it eists, is a real number. However, take away the it instruction, and a restricted equal sign is needed: ()( + 2) for 1 = + 2 One way to view the = sign in this latter sentence, is that it is being used to compare two functions. Two functions are equal only if they have the same domains, and the outputs agree for all allowable inputs. A precise statement follows.
