2 Graphing Calculator Basics I. The layout of the calculator Scientific Calculator Keys: Perform the basic operations of arithmetic like any scientific calculator Advanced Function Keys: Menus that organize the additional features of the calculator Editing Keys: Change expressions or values that have been entered in; also access options highlighted in yellow or green Graphing Keys: Display graphs, scatter plots and tables II. How to operate this machine 1. ON / OFF nd / ALPHA - 3. Mode - 4. Enter - 5. Quit - 6. Home Screen - 7. Contrast -

3 III. Using the Menus 1. By pressing the button you have the choice of 4 different menus. To see a different menu press the right or left button until you have highlighted the menu you want. 2. There are two ways of selecting an item from the menu: a. Scroll down to highlight the item you want and press b. Press the number of the item you d like 3. Other important menus you ll use are and. These menus are utilized during regression which is explained at the end of these notes. IV. The scientific portion of your calculator 1. The calculator works using order of operations: PEMDAS Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction 2. Type the expression into the calculator exactly as you read it on your page. BUT you must make sure you utilize parentheses when necessary so that the answer is calculated exactly as you would like it to be. 3. Press to evaluate the expression. The calculator will display the answer under the expression you typed in. PARENTHESES ARE IMPORTANT! Try It! Evaluate x = or (2 x 6 ) (3+7) = Which is correct? 4. Why are there two minus signs? a. The subtraction symbol is the blue button on the far right of the calculator. b. The button just to the left of the enter key indicates a negative integer.

4 5. Fractions a. Use the divide key to indicate a fraction b. If you are calculating with a fraction, use parentheses around the fraction so the calculator treats it as one quantity. 6. Converting between decimal and fraction (and vice versa) a. Decimal to fraction: type the decimal Frac b. Fraction to decimal: type the fraction Dec Try It! Evaluate Exponents Try It! Evaluate a. Squaring button b. Square root Note that the square root button automatically opens a parenthesis before you enter the expression you d like to evaluate c. Other powers - use the carrot key d. Other roots use the x th root key under the menu: index of the radical x type your expression 8. Fixing mistakes: a. Clear completely erases everything you ve typed in b. Delete erases the value that the cursor is on c. 2 nd Del to insert a character into your expression i. Put your cursor to the spot where you want the new character to go ii. Press (The old character will be blinking) iii. Type in the new character or expression iv. When finished press to evaluate the updated expression 9. Your calculator s got memory! a. To use the previous answer in a new calculation, we need the ANS option: b. To use the expression you ve previously entered, we need the ENTRY option: c. To store a number for usage later, store it as a variable i. A variable is a letter that represents a numerical quantity ii. You can store your number in ANY letter you wish by pressing X iii. When you need to use the number again, instead of typing it in you just press the letter it was stored in. CAUTION: Only use variables in which you ve recently stored values.

5 V. Graphing 1. When asked to graph a function, enter the function in your calculator by pressing and typing the function exactly as it appears. 2. Set a viewing window that is appropriate for your function. RECOMMENDATION: Always try the standard viewing window first! a. To set the standard window: - ZStandard b. Once you choose ZStandard, the calculator will automatically begin graphing your function! c. Sometimes ZStandard may not be the best window to use, so you must manually adjust the window settings. i. To enter the window yourself press ii. You must enter numbers for each of the following options: Xmin the smallest (leftmost) value on the x-axis Xmax the largest (rightmost) value on the x-axis Xscl the scale to use on the x-axis Ymin the smallest (bottom) value on the y-axis Ymax the largest (top) value on the y-axis Yscl the scale to use on the y-axis iii. To view your graph in the new window press

6 3. The calculator also has a table of input and output values for any function entered in a. First we must set up the table: b. TblStart the input value to start your table at Tbl the way your table will be incremented c. Once the table is set the way you want it, press to view the table 4. The calculate menu has features that answer specific questions about your graph. a. To access this menu: VI. Linear Regression 1. First, we must enter the data in the calculator. a. To get to the edit menu: b. In L1 you enter the independent variable values - the year column c. In L2 you type the dependent variable values - the number of students column

7 2. Looking at a scatterplot of the data, we will decide what type of relationship exists. a. To turn our scatterplot on: b. To display your scatterplot on a window specific to your data: ZoomStat 3. Next we re going to want to compute the function that mathematically matches our data. a. To get your linear equation: CALC LinReg(ax+b) 4. To visualize how closely your function matches your data we ll look at the graph of the line. a. To insert the equation into your graphing menu: Statistics EQ RegEQ b. To view the graph: Additional Notes
