USING CODEBLOCKS Implementing Computational Models With C and the the GSL on Linux Dr. José M. Garrido Department of Computer Science Updated September 2014 College of Science and Mathematics Kennesaw State University c 2014, J. M. Garrido
Using CodeBlocks 2 1 Introduction There are several Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) that help implementation of programs written in C, C++, Fortran, and other programming languages. Eclipse is one of the most complete and powerful tools, it is mainly useful for Java programs and in general, it can be very slow. For C++, C, and Fortran programs, Codeblocks and CodeLite are faster, lighter, and more convenient to use. This document briefly explains using CodeBlocks on Linux for implementing C programs and linking with the basic lib and GSL libraries. For a more detailed introduction to CodeBlocks, refer to various websites with CodeBlocks tutorial and documentation. The official user manual and complete tutorial, visit the web page: The preliminary step required is the installation of the GSL library in the computer system running Linux. Use a package manager such as Synaptic, Ubuntu Software Center, or other and install the GSL. 2 CodeBlocks The following sequence of steps involve the basic procedure for editing C programs, compiling, and linking with the GSL library. 1. Start CodeBlocks and click on Create a new project. The screen that appears is shown in Figure 1.
Using CodeBlocks 3 Figure 1: Starting Codeblocks. 2. Select Console Application and click the Go button, which is located on the upper right corner of the window. 3. On the Console Application window, click the Next button. Select C language and click Next. 4. Type the project title (name), e.g. P polyfitm1, click Next. This assumes that project will be created in folder: /home/jgarrido/comp_models/c_progs, as shown in Figure 2.
Using CodeBlocks 4 Figure 2: Title and location of project. 5. Select GNU GCC Compiler and click the Finish button. 6. Activate the left pane of the screen ( Management), select the Projects tab. If a new C source file is to be edited, double click main.c, which is the default source file on the project. The file appears on the editor pane. Now you can edit this C source file. 7. A new source file can be created by selecting New in the file menu and selecting File. A new window appears, select C/C++ source and click the Go button. Click Next on the C/C++ source window. Select C and click Next. Select the path by clicking the (... ) button, type the name of the file, click Save. Click Finish. Now you can edit this new source file. 8. If one or more existing source files are to be included in the project, select the Project menu on the top bar, or right-click on the project name. Select Add files. Select the directory of the source to add to the project and select the C source file(s). Click Open, see Figure 3.
Using CodeBlocks 5 Figure 3: Adding an existing source file to a project. 9. The source files are now under sources and under the project name. Doubleclick on the desired source file to edit it further. The file now appears on the edit area of the screen, as shown in Figure 4. Figure 4: Editing a C program. 10. Right-click on the current project name and select Project build options. (a) On the tab Compiler settings, check Enable all compiler warnings. (b) On the tab Linker settings, click the Add button to add a library to the project. Repeat to add all necessary object files and libraries. For
Using CodeBlocks 6 example: libbasic lib.a, gsl, and gslcblas. This assumes the local object file libbasic lib.a is located in folder: /home/jgarrido/comp_models/basic. Figure 5: Linker settings. (c) On the tab Search directories and the tab Compiler, add the search directory for header files required by the source program while compiling. In the example, the header file required by the C program is located in the folder ~/comp_models/basic. On Windows, this local header file would be located on C:\comp_models\ basic. The location of header files of the GSL are indicated as C:\GSL\ include. (d) On the tab Search directories and the tab Linker, add the search directory of the libraries if needed. On Linux Ubuntu, the external libraries are always stored in standard system directories. The local library libbasic lib library can be stored in any location, for example ~/comp_models/basic. For this, click the Add button, then click (... ) and navigate to the appropriate directory. Figure 6 shows the resulting window.
Using CodeBlocks 7 Figure 6: Search directories for linker. 11. Build the project, which compiles and links the files in the project. On the top bar, select the Build menu and select the Build option. The Build log appears in the lower pane of the Codeblocks screen and is shown in Figure 7. Figure 7: Building the project. To execute the program, select the Run option in the Build menu. A new screen appears with the results of the execution, as shown in Figure 8. After the program terminates execution, press the Enter key.
Using CodeBlocks 8 Figure 8: Executing the project. 12. On the top bar, activate the File menu and select Close project. Because the project was created in the directory ~/comp_models/c_progs, Codeblocks creates several new directories and the executable file in located in the directory ~/comp_models/c_progs/p_polyfitm1/bin/release.
