1 Application Note AN-2035 Digital Diagnostic Monitoring Interface for XFP Optical Transceivers Overview This Application Note efines Finisar implementation of the XFP 2-wire serial interface, which is use for serial ID, igital iagnostics, an certain control functions. The 2-wire serial interface is manatory for all XFP moules an it is efine in the XFP MSA Specification. It is moele largely after the igital iagnostics monitoring interface propose for the SFP an GBIC optical transceivers an efine in SFF raft ocument SFF-8472 Rev 9.3, which in turn is an extension of the original serial ID systems efine for the GBIC an SFP transceivers. One major ifference, however, is that the memory structure is change to use a single 2-wire interface ar. IMPORTANT: The igital iagnostics functionality an memory maps escribe in this ocument apply to Beta- an Prouction-level units only. Please contact Finisar for information on Alpha-level units. As with GBIC an SFP transceivers, the XFP serial interface uses the 2-wire serial CMOS EEPROM protocol efine for the ATMEL AT24C01A/02/04 family of components. When the serial protocol is activate, the host generates the serial clock signal (SCL pin). The positive ege clocks ata into those segments of the memory map that are not write-protecte within the XFP transceiver. The negative ege clocks ata from the XFP transceiver. The serial ata signal (SDA pin) is bi-irectional for serial ata transfer. The host uses SDA in conjunction with SCL to mark the start an en of serial protocol activation. The memories are organize as a series of 8-bit ata wors that can be are iniviually or sequentially. The 2-wire serial interface provies sequential or ranom acc to 8 bit parameters, are from 00 to the maximum ar of the memory. The structure of the memory map is shown in Figure 1. The normal 256-Byte I2C ar space is ivie into lower an upper blocks of 128 Bytes. The lower block of 128 Bytes is always irectly available an is use for the iagnostics an control functions escribe in this ocument that must be acce repeately. One exception to this is that the stanar moule ientifier byte efine in the GBIC an SFP transceivers is locate in Byte 0 of the memory map (in the iagnostics space) to allow software evelope for multiple moule types to have a common branching ecision point. This byte is repeate in the Serial ID section so that it also appears in the expecte relationship to other serial ID bits. Multiple blocks of memories are available in the upper 128 Bytes of the ar space. These are iniviually are through a table select Byte which the user enters into a location in the lower ar space. Thus, there is a total available ar space of 128 * 256 = 32 Kbytes in this upper memory space. The upper ar space tables are use for l frequently acce functions such as serial ID, user writable EEPROM, reserve EEPROM an iagnostics an control spaces for future stanars efinition, as well as ample space for venor specific functions. A passwor is not require to rea any serial ID or iagnostics information in the lower memory ar space or in Tables 02h. A passwor is not require to write any controls efine in the igital iagnostic functions escribe in the MSA ocument either. A passwor (entere into bytes ) is require to allow write acc to the User EEPROM Table (02h). The efault passwor is h per the XFP MSA, an it can be change by the host manufacturer by writing the new passwor into bytes when the correct ol passwor has been written into bytes The host passwor must be in the range of to 7FFFFFFFh. The 2-wire serial interface ar of the XFP moule is X (A0h). In orer to allow acc to multiple XFP moules on the same 2-wire serial bus, the XFP pin-out inclues a MOD_DESEL or moule eselect pin. This pin (which is pulle high or eselecte in the moule) must be hel low by the host to select the moule of interest an allow communication over the 2-wire serial interface.
