Great Stories Start Here at HxGN LIVE 04/07/10: EDIT OR DELETE THIS IN THE MASTER > SLIDE MASTER UNDER THE INSERT MENU.
Geosystems at HxGN LIVE Transitioning from Frame to Pushbroom Cameras Craig Molander Surdex Corporation
Presentation Outline About Surdex Surdex and Leica instrumentation Why Surdex added pushbroom (ADS100) technology Technology perspective Business perspective Continued use of DMC-1 technology Integration of pushbroom into Surdex s custom software Sample projects & ADS100 imagery 3
About Surdex Corporation 60 th continuous year of operation under same ownership Based in St. Louis, Missouri area From regional to top 10 largest US aerial mapping firms Serving Federal, state, local government Defense mapping/homeland Security Private engineering, utilities, oil & gas, environmental Orthos, LiDAR, DEM/DTM/DSM, topographic, planimetric Progressive R&D 4
About Surdex Corporation Strong focus on aerial data acquisition 8 large format digital aerial cameras RCD30 + Penta + Trio configurations LiDAR ALS aircraft 4 Cessna 441 (Conquest) with RVSM Twin pistons: Cessna 335, Cessna 421 Single pistons: 4 Cessna 206 In-house FAA inspection, maintenance, repair 5
Surdex & Leica Aerial Data Capture Digital Imaging Systems Over 500,000 Frames Processed DMC-1 DMC-1 DMC-1 DMC and ADS100 Fully Integrated into Surdex Solutions ADS80 First ADS100 s Delivered in US ADS100 ADS100 ADS100 ADS100 LiDAR ALS-50 ALS-70 Oblique RCD30 Penta & Trio 6
Surdex & Leica USDA NAIP (National Agriculture Imagery Program 1 Meter GSD) 7 69 State Projects 30 Different States >352,000 DOQQs >5M sq mi (>13M sq km) > $60M in contracts Over 26% of Total Program DOQQs

Why the Move to ADS100? (Technical) Acquisition perspective Large swath improves acquisition efficiency Improved efficiency = fewer resources = ability to fly more projects Higher flying height = fewer airspace issues Production perspective Fewer images = reduced logistics Fewer seamlines = reduced production = fewer artifacts = quick inspection Increased nadir view = less DTM modeling = reduced production Improved efficiency = reduced costs = more competitive 9
Geometry: DMC-1 vs ADS80 vs ADS100 ADS100 requires: 20% less acquisition than ADS80 35% less acquisition than DMC-1 10
Frame vs Pushbroom Seamlines ADS100 St. Louis Area 6 /15cm GSD ADS (top) and DMC (bottom) >10X difference in linear seamline length Reduced production, artifacts, inspection DMC-1 11
Why the Move to ADS100? (Business) US market perspective Mostly best value : technical/qualifications (~70%), price (~30%) With many qualified firms, it often comes down to price Success formula Reputation/past performance: It s the carpenter and the right tools Competitive price With regards to client acceptance of frame or pushbroom Increasingly neutral rarely specified in tenders Few strongholds of frame-only or pushbroom-only left 12
Continued use of DMC-1 technology Surdex continues to use frame (DMC-1) technology Smaller projects: little (or no) advantage of ADS100 Large projects: backup/additional resources (eg: NAIP) A few clients prefer/require frame technology State departments of transportation (DOT) Clients who value-add with stereoscopic digitizing (software) Project/program specifications Surdex remains sensor agnostic to address all requirements, specifications, and client preferences 13
Pushbroom Integration Why originally frame digital (DMC-1 in 2005)? Path of least resistance software geared toward film/frame Allowed us to concentrate on acquisition and not production Challenges Surdex custom software was frame-centric Not familiar with XPro and potential customization Transition approach getting our feet wet Acquired ADS80 in summer 2012 Several projects done with ADS80 in

Surdex did the acquisition in 3 days of flying out of 5 days, compared to 6 days of flying out of 26 in with full coverage at 6 in I looked at the errors/call-outs observed during the qualitative QA/QC process and there were 43 errors in 2010 compared to 15 in 2014 (a 65% decrease)... With fewer seamlines in the 2014 collection, 0 problems with seamlines compared to 4 in more brilliant color and sharper edges and less building lean. 23
